Nice reels indeed, back in the day, here on the UK East Anglian coast where distance casting is a ''must'', we used oil rather than grease on the plain bearing ABUs because when looking for every yard, grease created too much drag. Thanks Dennis , take care and stay safe

I agree. I only oil bearings. I rarely use grease on them as the grease attracts debris and as you note, slows the performance - Thanks for the note - Dennis

Abu 7000 such great reels. Really bulletproof in terms of performance. Cast great. Don’t backlash. Great drag. Hold plenty of line. People sometimes forget a level wind is really nice at night and when it’s cold and you’re wearing gloves.

Dennis, this is exagctly the Ambassador that I once had and sold. I put a chrome spool on it that I got from Abu. I t must be one of the most beautiful reels I’ve ever owned. It came with two handles. I am so happy to see this reel again. Oh, I got my Penn 450ss today but I haven’t started on it yet. Everything works but it is sluggish. I’m guessing it is grease choked. I used my Ambassador for surf fishing and it was great for that until I couldn’t see well enough to keep bad things from happening. That’s when I sold my conventional reels and went entirely to spinning reels. Great video of a fantastic fishing reel! - Chris

A few years ago I was satisfied to stop getting any more Penn vintage reels after I got all the black/gold Z reels. I am so glad I decided to get the next series. They are a joy to work on and even better for fishing. Next week I’ll be taking the 850ss you gave me next week to the beach for surf fishing. - Chris

Abu are fantastic reels......unless made in china. when i service my reels i strip them to the bare bones and clean the parts in my ultrasonic cleaner

How do you determine if the bushings in each side case are warn? Can they be replaced or should bearings be used?

Bushings wear can be checked by putting the gear stud in the bush and checking for side to side play. It is it tight and no or limited side play you are good. If there is a lot of slop, they need to be replaced. Bearings as replacements are fine, but not necessary - Bushings don't rust or seize up like bearings, so that is their advantage - Dennis

How do you know when to grease and when to oil?

The obvious answer is where the reel makes noise or is sluggish. I recommend that you service the reels at least once a year and that you change the oils and greases at that time - Dennis

The parts that touch one another get grease - gears, slides, levers, etc. Bearings get oil.
