Oh I have at least two larger Abu Garcia spinning reels but they aren’t rear drags. Have you ever seen a model 909? It is a huge, heavy, all metal, surf reel in my collection. I like this one Dennis but the drag is nowhere close to my big Shimano SSG 7000 saltwater rear drags. (14 drag washers). I may have to look for this Abu Cardinal. I like that clip holding tha axle shaft. My big Shimanos have two tiny difficult C-clips that are so frustrating. I like the gearing on this reel too. The anti-reverse is really unusual. You could have used your large size Mitchell tool for the rotor. Nice to also see a snap ring with large holes. This was a great flea market find Dennis! I put sealed bearings in my Shimanos. You are correct about the limits of this drag but unless you hook a monster this reel would handle trout, flounder, pompano, and whiting very nicely. I’m not overly fond of that plastic crosswind block but many other vintage reels use plastic or nylon blocks. I do like the way the click piece on the rear drag is mounted. Another great one. I was hoping you could do a video on Penn 525 mag. English version of squall maybe. But I have no idea. Seems some are older than squall line??

bob - I have done a straight 525 GS and you can watch it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJernaZsjtqCb68 I have not done one on the mag or the UK version. Those differ on the non gear side plate, so the basic gear side service is similar to what is show on this video, Thanks for asking - Dennis

Always something to learn on your channel that's for sure. It is funny that such a big reel has such a small set of drag washers, and the plastic crosswind block? What's up with that? Anything to save a few cents, but really that necessary to save a few cents there??

The reel is very strong. I am not sure of the metal used in the main gear. It doesn't appear to be anything cheap, like pot metal. As I mentioned, I don't like the plastic crosswind block. That can dry out and snap off. Thanks George - Dennis

It could, minimally. The issue is rally with max drag and that is a function of surface area. Sine a direct replacement would not increase the area, the max drag would be the same. The carbonated washers could make operation smoother

$40 to $50 used on ebay. I think I'd rather chip in another $25 for a brand new Penn Pursuit of the same size (6000-7000). Low drag in surf no good, mostly bushings instead of sealed bearings, etc. Plastic Cross Wind block, yuck. I just recently tried to repair a cheapo Daiwa Shock 3000, and found that the plastic cross wind bock had warped, disengaging from the eccentric (also plastic). Kept some parts off of it, but basically junk. Thanks so much Dennis. Your servicing and review of the guts is so awesome, especially for those of us who enjoy working on these older reels and bringing them back to life.
