I bought this reel but 4600 size around 4 years ago through ebay new. But very disspointed because it does not very smooth and feel heavy while cranking it plus weird sound on cog wheel side. I contacted the seller and the seller told me several buyers also complained that problem. Upon inspecting the cause of the problem, i believed the cause of the problem is the cog gear/idle gear. The diameter the cog gear is to big and as the result it feel heavy and tight when cranking it. When i pulled out the gear and turning the handle, it feel smooth and light. I tried changed it with other cog gear from my other abus reel but still feel very thight. How is your reel? It smooth while you cranking it?

@@azman4749 so far I have not had any issues, they may have fixed the problem since you bought it 4 years ago, I will let you know if it happens to me and If I find a solution

how durable are these reels for salt water use i feel like this is not a saltwater reel but a freshwater reel that can be used in saltwater... which was it designed for???

rolando carballo Very durable. You just have to keep them clean. They are very popular for inshore saltwater fishing for fluke.

how would a small baitcaster like the Abu compare with a small spinner like the penn battle for distance casting at the beach?....I really like the feel of conventionals with my surf rods but I'm new to plug and jig casting at the beach with lighter rods...not sure which reel to go with

depends on what you are throwing and how far you need to throw. Most guys use spinning reels because they are easier to use.

jandhtackle Right, spinners are more common, it seems most of the small light conventionals are level wind...which will cut down on distance...I'm looking at throwing 1/2 oz to 1 oz.....at the beach.....as much distance as possible
