The paper towel or indeed fluffy towel, stops the springs and tiny screws disappearing so you don't spend the next two hours grovelling on the floor with a torch and magnet..

D Kat Lol, ya I have many Abu Garcia Max series reels and they're all pretty much the same. I do my best to keep them maintained. I've also found if you remove the excessive amount of manufacture grease from purchase and re-oil and grease they work so much better.

Thank you. The Abu drawings are miniscule and a bit hopeless. Your video showed me which way up the pressure washer goes. I do have a different Silvermax, with a 'wheel' instead of the 'button' for the filipping switch. The washer you have on top of the pressure washer I believe should be directly under the star knob and on top of the bent spring washers which should go belly to belly. That washer often sticks to the inside of the star knob. Otherwise the sleeve won't push far enough down through the anti-reverse roller bearing. The narrow washer goes on top of the sleeve under the clicky thing. As a general rule, washers go between parts that turn and bear against each other.

ebluvr72 Sounds like you may have depressed spool release while it was dissassembled. Would have to dissassemble and flip that switch back manually from the inside.

Chandler Wood This one has the flipping switch, but I never used it. If the flipping switch is what you can't get back on, I'm sorry I've never messed with it before to help.

I need help with mine. I took mine apart cleaned it and put it back together and now the button that you press to cast won’t re engage when I turn the handle. Just wondering if you would know why.

Fallen Osprey You must have depreesed it while dissassembled or disengaged the internal trigger without resetting before assembly. One other possibility is the silver sprocket under the main brass gear is not fully seated or reinstalled upside down. Both possibilities will require removing the main side plate to fix.

Thanks for the video. Is it normal if my promax 3 can only get 1 full cycle of the line guide compared to yours at 25:47? I have assembled and disassembled multiple times and it ain't getting any smoother/longer :(

Try it cleaned, oiled, drag off and spool tensioner backed out.

My star dial won't tighten all the way I've fixed that problem on my black max before so I knew how to do it but it still is super loose any tips plz??

AJ SYED If it's causing the spool to move instead of tightening, then depress spool release and thumb the spool then continue to tighten. If done already, ensure everything is installed correctly as well as not cross threaded.

Probably the assembly order of the parts. Pressure washer has to go cup side up or it cannot press on the drag washer, and the 'sleeve' all the way in through the roller on top of it before fixing the side case, or it won't go all the way home. The flipping switch will flip out five times before you get the case on. The sleeve goes squared side up to just under the lip of the side case, you can just get a fingernail into its groove to pull it out. Or the works jam up. Ratchet, small drag washer, bevel drive, large drag washer, pressure washer cup up, sleeve, narrow washer, clicky thing, two spring washers belly to belly, thrust washer, star knob., oblong spring washer, winding handle, nut, retainer, screw. Degrease the friction drag, fibre washers, too much grease and oil just makes them slippery. But the gear teeth want oil as do the thrush washers. The plastic parts like a little smear of silicone grease, metal parts like oil.

Hey I know I'm super late but the little washer that goes into the line guide wasnt there on mine or I might have lost it... is that piece crucial to the performance of the reel or am I okay without it?

Brandon Victor It may cause quicker wear of feeder paw and worm gear. May also cause line lay issues. I've found that piece before from a business on EBay. Can't remember company name or price other than that it was cheap.

brother you should have show the main shaft bearing that needs to be cleaned as well ......2 screws and lift it out Remember what way the keeper goes and they should be a washer/shim in there also...other than that great job :0)

Kennedy Catfishing 1st note I do these type of videos as a hobby and support to those who may benefit from it. Yet I'm not a professional in this field. In all around oil and lube I actually don't put much on at all. I actually dissassemble all new reels within the 1st few months as I've found a few companies IMO put on to much. Yet I also clean and lube my reels quite often depending on frequency of use. For the drag washers on the main gear, when needed I'll clean off the old and only put a small dap on my finger and rub it on to them. Mainly just enough that they stick together. Now if it's a real old reel or has been extremely punished by drag pulling lunkers. You may need to replace your drag washers. Or also ensure that every thing is installed correctly.

Keep It Bent! I went back in and found out that the clip with the springs holding the gear was placed backwards. Lol causing no spool tention and the drag not to work . Your videos helped a lot thanks for your replying it made me go and assure everything was installed properly 🤘 .. next up is the figure out why my bait runner spin reels drag seems to be malfunctioning, the spool itself spins backwards as if there is no drag pressure 😕 the dial is cranked but nothing. It almost seems like I get more pressure when the bait runner is engaged. . Any ideas on what it could be. Anti reverse or the drag I'm guessing. Everything else works fine

@@christopherwarren3272 sorry, kind of hard to diagnose without having it in hand. If... you have any other max series reels. You could also slowly take them apart at same time till you find deficiency.

@@christopherwarren3272 check aluminum gear under the main brass gear. Make sure its in correctly and not flipped in wrong direction. Also when reinstalling it, drop it in first and ensure it seats properly before dropping in the large brass gear.

@@Keep_It_Loaded - I have an old very early KastKing. They probably perform the same on the water but the build quality is telling. The Silvermax is built to be serviced even though it is a budget entry level model and last a lifetime where the KK is kinda glitzy and disposable, but can be serviced (not sure about parts). Neither compare well in build quality to the Revo models nor my ancient 6500CS.

I have an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600C4 High Speed “The Original” 6.3:1 that one day while fishing I hooked a catfish on another rod and while I was fighting the fish to the bank some stranger picked up my other rod (the one with that C4 reel) and tried casting it and obviously didn’t know how to use a baitcaster and got one nasty @ss backlash on it without me realizing it. I left right after landing the catfish and when I was home unloading my gear and rods I noticed the rats nest. I tried for hours to undo the backlash but I just couldn’t so I tried disassembling the reel to cut off the tangled line mess and after putting it back together just reverse of how I took it apart I noticed it still works but the thumb release only clicks of I press with pressure to the right side. I know it’s not broken I’m just not knowledgeable in the mechanics of the interior parts resulting in me not knowing how to make it work correctly. Idk what to do though bc I can’t use it and it’s not broken so I don’t want to just throw it away...

Billy Stout Whoo, they're just my back up reels now and it has been awhile. Let me see, 1x in side plate, 2x in main side plate, 1x on spool, 1x under main shaft (not shown in dissassembly), and 1x in the worm gear housing.

​@@Keep_It_Loaded - I've only found five on mine despite the body saying, "6 Bearings". 1- In the drag plate (spool spindle), 2- on the spool. 3- under the side pressure knob, 4- below the drive shaft, 5- the AR roller. The part No.65 "Ball Bearing" above the roller bearing in the drawing is not present, indeed an extra BB there would serve no purpose whatsoever.

At the very end of the disassembly, you do not address what happens if the thumb bar is accidentally pushed, which causes the reel-stopper to be ejected into space.

I did find that part, thank you, however, please, regarding the line guide, I went through several rebuilds, because I'm VERY dumb about the VERY important orientation to make the line guide required to make the reel to work, and I would like suggest that you make it VERY clear, please

I even went back through the videos again to see where i went wrong, put them both back together exactly as the video shows. both reels are now junk. wish i'd left them alone.

Thanks for the video. I tried to fix my SilverMax 2, but the plastic components and the thumb bar were ruined. Poor quality materials and lame engineering. I'll never buy Abu again.

That is not at all justified. I used it to rebuild mine after I took my Silver Max 3 apart, and couldn't get it right when I put it back together. He points out gotchas which, along with the video, should be clear enough. Replying to the guy above who said he wouldn't buy ABU again - that's a shame. ABU used to be the best you could buy without having to impoverish yourself. Now that it is made in china it's not so good. Perhaps ABU will bring manufacture back to sweden now
