Discomfort in music is definitely a great topic to talk about when it comes to music or art as a whole, and all of these were great examples (even if I haven't listened to all of them myself), I wanna say that the last official live album from John Coltrane titled The Olatunji Concert: The Last Live Recording is something that's worth talking about as I think it's kinda a mix of disturbing people (even if it's unintentional) as well as embracing the fact that John was going to pass on very soon, so he and everyone with him goes all out with blaring instrumentation that goes on for a while, what makes it better or worse depending on who you are is that the sound is very lo-fi because of a recording issue iirc. Also a whole video on Ground Zero or Otomo Yoshihide would be awesome as well, I myself need to listen to more of their discography because Consume Red is the only record I've ever heard from them so far and I can't wait to check out more of their stuff, great video.

Especially the more atmospheric ones, it feels like youre backed in a corner, by someone whos hysterically sobbing their eyes out, threatening to unalive themselves if you look away. The lyrics are like running thoughts during the peak of the crisis, too. Ppl like Sorry…, Happy Days, Mutiilation, Xasthur, Hikan, Fentanil, BEGOTTEN are ones to check out. Yet, i still find personal comfort from it

David Bowie was such a fuckin legend. I was only superficially aware of most of his work but I remember exactly where I was when I read the news that he died, sitting at my computer in the apartment I spent the last of my teen years and early 20's in. It was like 2am or so and I read the news as it broke and even only being a passing fan of his I felt a powerful sense of loss, like a figure who'd always been there not just for me but for most of the adults I had ever known would always be there, as if it was unthinkable that he too would also pass. I started going more deeply into his discography, but I remember opnely weeping the first time I heard Lazarus, listening to it for the first time shortly after reading the news. Its such a powerfully emotional song and I still can't hear it without getting at least a little choked up. I only wish I had gotten to know his work more intimately much sooner than I had, you're in for a real treat Jake. They can't all be zingers and certainly not all of Bowie's were, but the man was shamelessly original and a truly visionary artistic genius, the likes of which are rare and number very few in every generation. I don't love everything he ever did, but I love a lot of it and I love the man. R.I.P. Starman

I have found that music sometimes expresses emotional states I can otherwise not express, in words or visual art forms, some sort of Gordian knot of emotional complexity that is so weird and nuanced all I can do is point to whatever the music is, and hope it inspires the same in someone else. Uncomfortable music for uncomfortable states of mind. I often make music specifically aiming for that, as a sort of therapy. I end up traversing a lot of genres, but mostly just end up sounding like I made a bunch of Akira Yamaoka B-sides (and honestly, I'm okay with that, that's legendary music).

One song I would consider is the title track of Prince's 3 album collection Crystal Ball. Even without the context, the feel of it with the celesta like instrument and Orchestra it is uneasy and almost anxiety inducing... if it weren't for the fact it also gets super funky. It's a song I can relate to due to how uneasy it is for me to think about the future and having to find comfort in looking for something to give me a good enough vision of what's to come.

for me dissonant and unsettling music is just easier to listen to and sounds better. when i hear or listen to music that is commercial or mainstream, it drains my energy. it's usually bright-sounding(even if it's a more somber tone), and the ultra-refined vocals and production of the track feels too rigid. with uneasy music there aren't all these expectations and standards, and it's reflected in the sound. it's allowed to just exist as a niche for those that seek or need it's company

I feel like you're further down the rabbit hole with this than myself. I have heard of Andre 3000. And Bon Iver as well as Bowie of course. But I've never heard of the earlier mentions. And alot of the music i prefer is reasonably odd. I always liked bands like early Butthole Surfers. Ween. King Missile. Skinny Puppy. Art of Noise. The Residents. Negativland. And many more. The song i would recommend as fairly odd would be... the Tear Garden - You & Me & Rainbows. I don't think it's quite as odd as your earlier mentions. But it's worth a shot. One of the most enthralling album experiences i had ever had in recent memory was YAYAYI's self titles album. I was intersted in it when I came across this track named \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\6 (actual name), I had no idea how but I became obsessed with it when I first heard it. So I became interested, weird title, long album, small indie artist I had never heard before, hit a lot of the points. The day I decided to listen to it was a pretty rough day, I was sleep deprived during my final weeks of highschool studying and I was at work working late. Since I had about 2 hours + left of work i decided to put that album on while I worked in the office. What I didn't know was that the first four tracks took up almost half the time of the entire albums runtime. They were long experimental glitch hop trap beats that were very broken, but also easy to sink in. I was having a bit of a headache so I was put off by it, but I decided to just let the album run. Then the second and third tracks came in (VERTICAL), a single track split in two. Those tracks were a mind f# to go through, it was even more broken and screwed than the first track and it was SIGNIFICANTLY longer (47 minutes long). The noises were getting to me, the unpredictable beat patterns and noises that'll just come in suddenly, my headache making the high frequencies feel even more stingy than usual, my sleep deprivation making me lose track of time, minutes feeling like hours. But oddly enough, it perfectly described what I was feeling those few last weeks of finals, chaotic mindless anxiety. It was EXTREMELY uncomfortable to go through, but at the same time, it felt like I was being seen by the song, I understood it. Its such a trip to go through, some moments feeling claustrophobic and busy while others were legitimately beautiful, those vocal samples on part two were euphoric. Oh and my reaction when the first part ended and the next started and I realized I had to sit through another 23 minutes of this song, I was dumbfounded. I wasn't having a good time, but I was having an unique experience, and I acknowledged that. Which is why I stuck through it til the end. The 4th song (PARALLEL) was like the ones before but it had more breathing room and was not as chaotic or anxiety inducing. (I typed so much I had to split this in two, I'm sorry lol)

Then finally after those 4 tracks the album went to the chopped and screwed half of the album. It was like coming up for air after holding your breath for so long underwater. The tracks still had an uncomfortable glitchy nature to them sometimes but they were more easy to get into and were F@$&?# BANGERS. \\\3 to \\\6 especially is a perfect run and hearing so many famous songs from the late 2000's to early 2010's being sampled and flipped on their head was great. The energy switch of this album was sudden but also so f$&@#% refreshing, the two halves of the album couldn't be more different in vibes but together they make an amazing experience. The whole album is an underrated gem and is ahead of its time, it's too bad someone stole his most famous song and made it a sound off TikTok called "uhhh" that has millions of streams on Spotify (ITS LITERALLY JUST THE LAST PART OF \\\6 SLOWED). Anyway, if anyone sees this, check out YAYAYI and his self titled album. it's now on streaming and you can buy it off bandcamp (though the bandcamp version has no second half of VERTICAL which sucks). Sorry if this was annoyingly long, the topic of this video just reminded me why I have so much love for that album and I just had to talk about it.

Personally, the album "Underperformer" by EYES is an uncomfortable album to listen to. The whole album is filled with rage and frustration towards everything bad going on in the world, but being powerless to do anything about, creating an atmosphere of an auditory anxiety attack.
