I don’t know how the “greater music community” feels about this one, but Fantano hated and I saw like one other person make a negative review of it, so I assume it counts. I really like Romcom by NakeyJakey. I think it’s an interesting concept album. The most common complaint I see people have about it is the constant use of meme samples over on what are otherwise very depressing songs. I personally don’t agree with this criticism because to me they perfectly capture the feeling you get when watching somebody use humor as a coping mechanism to deal with their problems. Like the artist is trying to bring brevity to the situation through inserting them in the beats, but it doesn’t work because they’re all warped, or they remind us of the very memory he’s trying to suppress.

Although many complaints towards Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven are valid, especially when compared to Cudi's previous works like Man On the Moon 1 and 2, this album has always held a special place in my heart for how raw and real it sounds. Him releasing such a strange and unique album has always inspired me artistically, as no matter what people will say, art should be created with passion and from your own experiences and soul.

total xanarchy will forever be dumb fun to me. There's some low moments like the song with diplo going full EDM at the end in a really uninteresting way but I have a really hard time considering anything else offensively bad, sometimes it's a little one note but still there's some enjoyable flows and some great features, Charli xcx kills it on moonlight

I'll give you this, at least you made a video and were honest on what you liked. You're among one of the few remaining KZbinrs who actually say your honest opinion. And I'm not just gloating, either. Most people are terrified of being honest about what they like if it doesn't match what everyone else says. I've seen way too many videos on people reciting the praise of certain mega-popular albums because they're afraid to say anything else. Either because it won't get the approval they kind-of want, or because they're afraid of saying the wrong thing and people explaining it to them. This video makes me want to try these albums, which is far more than I can say for when Rolling Stone makes a list of albums everyone agrees is good or something. I appreciate you for that; don't be afraid to be yourself. Shine on you crazy Mormons.

Fishmonger by underscores. I'm glad that underscores has been getting more appreciation with Wallsocket of last year and that album is damn amazing but imo fishmonger is just killer no filler the whole way through and while some might argue a couple songs got popular on hyperpop playlists and such, I dont believe the project as a whole is recognized enough. I have similar feelings for Scaled and Icy & The Slow Rush, too. Great video as always, I feel bad for not commenting my takes back when i first saw it lol

I think your point on embarrassment from liking a certain album or artist stemming from forming a connection with the content differently from others is very poignant. I even believe it can be taken further to explain other aspects of music culture. I, for one, am always very hesitant to be fully open about what artists I enjoy, especially when I know the person I am talking to doesn't listen to that type of music for example. And I do not mean this in a way that I would lie if anyone asked me if I liked those artists, I would be glad to talk about music I like. No, I am more so talking about having to justify or explain why I like a certain type of music or a certain artist. Even if the person listens to the music and likes it, it is not unlikely that they will form a completely different connection to it. I believe that this is also a reason that gatekeeping in online music communities can be so strong. If you form a community around liking an artist, and you are active in that community your knowledge will become more and more similar to other people in that community. This might cause certain aspects of the connection and appreciation with/of the music to become a bit more comparable. If you then expose this music to people without this context it could become quite easy to mentally disregard opinions from these people thinking that they just don't get it for example. And to be clear, I am not saying this is always a bad thing.

Car Seat Headrest- Teens of Style. The eerie and purposely bad mixing gives me a sense of comfort and artistry. In an album of Toledo's recycled songs from older albums, it tells the stories he's always been good at telling: Disconnect from family, sexual confusion, struggles in young adulthood... It is, in my opinion, the most Car Seat Headrest Car Seat Headrest record.

I liked Gorillaz' Humanz when it first was a thing and I have some nostalgia for it; I saw it once at a record store and still regret not getting it (same thing happened with The Now Now). I've seen bad or meh reviews on Humanz which admittedly Saturnz Barz sounds like what sparkling water tastes like but I only like it for its nostalgic value

this one is much less modern and much more relatively obscure than what Jake was discussing here, but the 1993 album ‘Cyberpunk’ by Billy Idol is one that i find remarkably unique with a very interesting charm to it. it was an experimental leftfield turn that incorporated techno and early edm into Idol’s punk-rock aesthetic, and also put computers to use in both its production and its marketing like hardly any other albums had done before. it’s change in sound was heavily criticized, and its loose sci-fi concept was derided as being far from Billy Idol’s wheelhouse; the album was received so poorly, in fact, that he didn’t release another new album until 12 whole years later. however, all the strange and bold and even sometimes admittedly cheesy aspects of this project made it a trailblazer for digital music and gave it an incredibly unique aura that i can’t help but enjoy.

The story of this album has always fascinated me. It was truly a concept album in every sense of the word, and if someone else like Aphex Twin or literally anyone without the baggage of being cheesy Billy Idol, it probably would have been far better received. But regardless of how good the album is or isn’t, Billy Idol deserves respect for trying to make something unique with the brand new technology that came into existence (the internet and computers). And even though the music on it is kinda bad IMO, the music videos and overall aesthetic are dope as hell in hindsight

x infinity by watsky is one of my favorite albums of all time and i never see it talked about. not completely sure if it’s generally disliked but i know most music fans’ perception of watsky is a negative one. i however am in love with all of his music and i think people tend to write him off as just another corny white rapper which couldn’t be farther from the truth (although admittedly his older music definitely falls in that category). x infinity is what i consider to be his magnum opus. a beautiful, grandiose project where watsky raps about all the worldly and personal issues on his mind, with amazing production and instrumentals to back. it’s a 1 hr 18 minute project counting the bonus track with a full album film and a frankly insane amount of lore and i love it so much.

The Revenge Of Hobo Johnson by Hobo Johnson, Unalive by Mori Calliope, Splinter by The Offspring, Femme Fatale by Britney Spears Highly underrated. In the case of Splinter and Femme Fatale, very ahead of their time. And Splinter is a huge influence on my music in the way its structured. Also, if you cringe at a Mori Calliope song you just don't know how to have fun. It's vtuber semi self aware weeb theatrical idol rap, don't take it that seriously ^w^
