The Airport line was a failure because they were running about one train or two a day!! in an airport where planes landed every hour!! So if you relied on the train, you would miss your flight. In an airport where taxis cost N6,000. a hourly train shuttle would have been a success, if kept on time and priced reasonably.

Those aerial clips of Abuja at the beginning were amazing - I had no idea the city was at that scale. It's difficult to believe that a project of this magnitude has just been abandoned. As Africans we have such exciting cities that hold so much potential but our officials are deliberately sabotaging us. How do we stop this without resorting to violence? Well done for the expose- it's well put together.

The problem with Nigeria's federal and state governments is that they always build projects far away from houses, from parks and gardens to railways. Not sure they conducted research on potential customers either. It's like they look towards North America instead of Europe for lessons.

They build things based on sentiment rather than on economic viability. That's why the president built a line from Kaduna to Niger, and not from Onitsha to Lagos or Onitsha to Abuja; which would obviously be the most economically viable lines - as people from there travel across the length and breadth of the nation a great deal and they have disposable income to use the rail.

As a random guy , following questions come to my mind: 1- Before any construction could start , there should be a feasibility report. Who participated in such a study and has it been released to the public prior to construction start? 2- If such a report exist, have any universities been involved in such a study because we need to assume that licensed people (scientists) must have been involved in the feasibility study of a project with such a magnitude? 3- Is there any public statement and/or declaration made by the the Ministry of Transportation to this dilemma and if so what is their opinion? 4- How many mainstream media outlets (websites/newspapers/TV/Radio stations) have picked up this issue and reported about it? 5- Did any supporting actions exist during the time period it was in use? Like from unlicensing private transportation (taxis, busses etc.) to and from the airport to the city center, to limiting parking spaces at the airport. A sad story indeed.

@@wezee1234 Your comment does not answer any of my questions rather making a general blaim on how issues are handled in Nigeria. Whereas citizens of this beautiful country should TRY to play a more active role in making problems public and pursuing these by sending material like this video to ALL members of parliament and the government. This would be participating in an effort to SOLVE a problem rather than blaiming others which is the easiest thing to do and which is also sadly the way Nigerians handle almost all issues. Bigwillz started with this video. Now this video needs to be distributed to the right channels so that pressure may grow on officials "TO DO SOMETHING" like Bigwillz says. THIS needs the attention of media, NGO'S, members of parliament etc. Unfortunately I can't participate because I do not live in Nigeria.

If you are familiar with Nigeria you would know that this is nothing new. There are hundreds of projects like this abandoned and left to rot across the country. Most Chinese-financed rail and metro lines, whether in China itself, or in Indonesia, Laos, Ethiopia, or Nigeria, avoid built-up urban areas like the plague. The primary reason is to drive down costs and simplify engineering, because demolition and land clearing is often the most expensive part of a project. The second reason is because Chinese cities raise money not by taxes, but by selling land grants. Building a metro line in empty land raises the land value by hundreds of times, as opposed to by only a few times in an existing urban area. It seems Kenya was aware of this Chinese habit, and tried to bring the termini of the Mombasa-Nairobi line closer to the city centres in negotiations, but only reached a half-compromise. On the other hand, the local government in Abuja turned out to be greedier than their Chinese counterparts, and chose to prioritise this line alignment over others, in order to maximise land sales revenues. There were also complaints about wasteful and oversized stations in China. But in less than a decade, many of the "oversized" stations went over capacity as the surroundings got developed, and there was not enough room left for expansion.

It is actually a viable project but lacks proper feasibility studies, research, and planning. Why not start the construction in densely populated areas that will attract high patronage? Instead, the only developed line connects to the airport. Who are those that use the airport most? The rich - this makes up only a few fractions of those that live in Abuja. From this, you have seen that the elite only consider themselves. This also explains the lack of proper consultation.

I am very happy today with your video and the point you raised, yes our youth must be aware of what is going on in this country especially in terms of wasting our money. Like you said good concept but bad implementation, the reason is those who brought the idea are just looking for the percentage they will gain, in short they create projects only to fill their pockets. There are thousands projects in the like of the one you have shown us across the country, especially housing estate. They rather build to the airport from behind the uncomplicated World Trade Center building which is even difficult to access by foot, such a waste. Are we that lacking in common sense? It's simple, the initial placement should've been where high human traffic currently resides (Central Business District) and not in areas with potential for development. The Chinese have to take some blame as they should have questioned the feasibility of this being a success based on the areas selected but they probably just took the cash and ran with the project as paid to them to do. The Lagos Metro specifically the blue line is another one that has a very questionable route.

The part you mentioned Amaechi is not entirely true... the project was entirely funded and constructed by Goodluck Jonathan..I do not know the kind of people he appointed as ministers..also note that this project is a FCT project not under the ministry of transportation so Amaechi has little to no responsibility for this

You mentioning amechi here is not nice at all. Abuja metro line has nothing to do with Abuja kaduna. This project was already completed before Buhari got into office. The only fault Buhari had is the fact of abandoning it. He should have extended it other middle class populated areas instead. Maybe he concluded the project was done by the FCT not the federal government, which is quite unorganized.😭

This project was largely funded by China's loans. Given China's bad track record of keeping developing countries in debt, I believe China knew this project wouldn't be successful but still gave out the loan when they shouldn't have. Now, the government is stuck paying for a loan for a failed project.

This is one of the most infuriating infrastructure projects I've ever heard of. It's as though the politicians went out of their way to get as bad a return on investment as possible! perfectly threading the needle to keep the new METRO line away from any population centre which might benefit from it. While there were already metro lines planned in other parts of the city in bad need of some decent public transportation options. I've seen many misguided infrastructure projects throughout the world that failed due to poor planning or planning based on faulty assumptions, but this metro line almost seems to have failed because of deliberate sabotage in the planning phase. I just don't see how anyone could mess up this badly through incompetence alone.

This is what you get when you have a leader that lacks the grey matter like Buhari on the saddle. This project was the brain child of Jonathan govt., but implemented poorly by Buhari. The planning by the Jonathan govt itself wasn't perfect because it should have been planned to evacuate commuters from high density areas of Abuja. Imagine an $842 Million project abandoned. Yet poor Nigerians are made to pay for a project that delivers no benefit. Shame on the calamity of a man called Buhari and his looto-maniac Transport Minister called Rotimi Amaechi.

It looks like like the light rail completed sections were done for propaganda to impress visitors and the jet setters. It's not a lost cause, but people will have to push for it. It's quite sad, that no lessons have been learned from the 1980s where so many projects were abandoned. This is 2022 and it still goes on. People really need to ask questions about what these projects are meant to achieve and if they are really necessary? It all boils down to transparency and accountability. Which are still issues for administrations there.

It's a waste! The government embarked on this project knowing it was going to fail. Abuja is not a mega city, it's a Civil service and political city. Projects like this have minimal impact and benefits to its population (rich demographic). It's worsened by the fact that the various stations were built in remote locations. Take a look at the Lagos project, the stations are built around markets, estates and bus parks, which makes it relevant means of transport for people, especially to popular destinations and to connect with other means of transport. Unfortunately, this project was prosecuted with Federal government revenue unlike Lagos. There are several cities in Nigeria that could have benefited from this, such as Kano, Kaduna, Ibadan, Onitsha, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Warri and Jos. A panel of enquiry should be set up to determine why this project was ever conceived and undertaken. It's a waste of public funds.

Just like street lights, trains aren't built with a business idea in mind that at sometime the money invested will be made back that's impossible. Even in the USA the trains do not make the money that was invested in it. They are maintained by the federal or state government through tax payers money and are kept running because it shows a progressive society. Whether there are passengers or not so long as people pay taxes the trains are supposed to run.

You get this when old men without proper information are at the helm of affairs. Here are the following why it failed: 1. This was built to cater to the needs of the rich. Your findings show that the only developed place is to connect to the airport. Who are the ones that use the airport the most? The rich! 2. They fail to start from where the larger population is: the average and the poor citizens. 3. Proper research was not done but they only built it for people to see that they are working but not to serve the needs of the masses; short-sightedness. My conclusion is, why not start from the denser areas which will attract the highest patronage and then, take it down to the less dense areas? Even at a very reduced fare rate, they will still make the money and be able to pay back because a lot of people are using it. This is a pain because it`s a national loss and failure.
