I opened it and was a bit daunted by all those parts, so your video was a huge help. This is the reel my grandpa taught me fishing on, and I caught my first few pikes on it so it really means a lot!

Thanks! Just disassembled, cleaned, lubed and oiled my grandpa’s old Abu 170 with the help of this video.

Sweet. I’m glad I was able to assist. Those old reels are very nice but they tend to give folks a fit when putting them back together.

I've had my share of those ( I call them dam reels) as I once acquired a bucket of six reels from an old boat house that had been flooded due to beavers building a dam. Somehow they also had Georgia clay in them and the ones on the top had dried out as the water evaporated but the four reels still submerged were somewhat saved from severe rusting by the thick clay. The dried ones, a Shakespeare firebird and Shakespeare bullet, sounded like rattles when you shook them and the dried clay was like cement. Fun Fun Fun

Rick I got one of these a few years ago and cleaned it up and thought that this is one of the best spincast reels out there based on the quality materials However for whatever reason I never enjoyed using it I later got the abumatic 150 because I liked the smaller size Again a great looking reel but I hardly use that one too I just don't find them really smooth and they are a pain to work on After trying many many spincast reels I've determined my favorite is the daiwa goldcasts These old Shakespeare's some of which you recently did videos on are also amazing reels in my opinion I have the 1795 and 1797

I actually like the drag star being on the outside of the handle.

I don’t dislike it. It’s just different from most reels. The first two times I tried to assemble the reel, I put the nut on before the handle. It doesn’t assemble well that way.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 And with that backwards thread on the screw that's really a nut a poor guy can really get confused. Enough to make a fella check his coffee. lol
@youngmartinsreels53142 жыл бұрын
The backwards screw/nut had me for a moment. But I’ve done enough reels by now to suspect reverse threads anywhere. If it doesn’t work one way, go try the other way.

I have an abumatic 375. Any experience on those? It reels fine for several feet then gets hard to turn and the spool no longer oscillates until you take the front cover off and loosen the line pick up head..

Mike, I haven’t worked on one of those before. It might be similar inside the the 280 I did a video on. I had a DAM quick reel that was doing something similar last year. It turned out the sleeve on the crankshaft was frozen in the housing. I guess it could be something like that.

That. Is the most patriotic shirt I’ve ever seen! That Ryobi is SX2N “The Silver Cloud” spinning reel. I have a SX4N and SX5N. If these were not entry level reels from back in the 70s they are close. I’m pretty sure they have 1 bailbearing. I’ve got to get a hemostat! You did a fine job on this one Rick. I found it very interesting. I absolutely despise e or c-clips. You did a great job with this on Rick. It was very interesting. - Chris. (What is your eBay name so we can find your store.)

Chris, My EBay name is: Rick48cj2a I haven’t sold anything on EBay in years. It has changed a lot since then. Their method of simplifying has gotten as bad as automated telephone systems. It takes forever to create a new listing. I’m kind of dreading opening up the Ryobi. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be another grease bucket. The Mitchell 400 I did with weekend was the worst I’ve seen yet. There was no place left inside it to squeeze anymore grease and it was hard as old rubber. It took me hours to clean it out. Since I had already created a 400 service video, I didn’t bother to film another.

Mr. Martin that could have been a better show of you messing with the parts reel.
