Join us in the garden as we harvest and sow. The Stone House Renovation continues and we take time to enjoy one of the reasons why we moved to Portugal.
We're Meraid and Dan. We moved to Portugal in December 2020 and have spent our best time establishing a apollinator freindly garden while producing lots of veggies. This year we started our historic stone house renovation and even while the rebuild is going on, we continue to create more space for wildlife, you and us to enjoy.
Dan has a full time job and I create the videos that we truly hope you enjoy.

Dear Meraid, dear Dan, thanks to all your hard work you have created a wonderful garden, the potato harvest is super good, even if the garlic leaves something to be desired, you both have green fingers, Mermaid it may be that with all the work lost weight, I think so. Looks good on you too, I wish you both continued strength and joy in everything, whether gardening or building a house. Kind regards, Elke Weiß

Were you happy with the in ground potato harvest this season compared to last where they were planted under straw? That, being with the number of chits that you planted this year. You may be able to start a second crop by planting some in 5 gallon buckets or pots in the shade of trees and if you will have enough water. Ten grow bags I did last April gave me enough of a crop to get me to the end of Jan. The few tiny leftovers I planted in three grow bags in Feb, put them in a shed. They came out the first part of April and the plants now have blossom which means there should be potatoes ready to harvest. It would be worth testing a few in pots with all that lovely compost that you have. All that rain has certainly made your garden beautiful even if the garlic did not like the wet

Such a ridiculous thing. Here in Central Russia potatoes are being planted only this week😅because of continuous cold weather. Normally, we do that in the beginning of May. I've had same issue of rust on my garlic this year. In UK, South West in Bournemouth. Last year planted and harvested 50 pretty decent bulbs, end of year planted 100 and all were doing fantastic till we had a long spell of rain then the rust hit, removed all of the infected leaves and stems then sprayed with a watered down milk evolution to try to prevent and further spread. It's looking like it was too late in catching it and will probably lose about 75% some of which I might be able to plant elsewhere for next year. If you re plant the immature bulblets they will grow but you won't develop large garlic bulbs however plenty of garlic green for in stir fries.

It's interesting that you suggest that because we have always offered some of our harvests to Portuguese friends and neighbours but they usually decline. The reason is because they all have their own farms or gardens to grow food for themselves. One of the builders has 120 sheep to look after as well. Sometimes, they eat an orange or two from the tree if they feel a bit peckish.

those white flowers against the blue sky at 1‘54 are so beautiful! What are they: ammi majus, carrot or? It’s a weird gardening year also here in the north of Germany: the forever lasting winter, then the ants plague, now the invasion of snails and slugs. About perennial garlic: I might have accidentally grown one. planted it i think in june 2022 in a raised bed, no clue that was the exact wrong time 😂. But: it’s still growing, getting bigger and bigger. Don’t dare to pick it up. Btw: your garden is a paradise!

Ha! There you are, I missed you 🙂 I always forget to mention that I love you are re-using these old field baskets. They are lovely. Have you thought of using worms in your garden patches? Earthworms can turn clay into nice fertile soil and red worms in your compost bins can then also be transfer with the compost into the gardens. And look at all the life, butterfly, little ants, bees, slugs even! That is a lot of potatoes. Now, not sure how it is in your neck of the wood but here in Canada and USA sun flower seeds (as many other products) are made sterile with pesticide so you cannot use them for planting anymore (charming isn't it?). If you go to organic growers the seeds from their harvest can be used. It will be interesting to see what happens with yours.

It's lovely to see you together in your potato-field with a great harvest. Here, in the North of the Netherlands, we have a lot of rain too, after a long and dark winter, the ground is cold. The reason is that 'they' block the sun for global warming and climate change. Well, the climate has changed now and we have build a greenhouse for our vegetables to grow. With electric lamps above the food, I hope we can harvest some. (no sun, no food) I saw you had a blue sky for a while, enjoy! With love.

Birdseed certainly will grow. That's why I bought roasted seed for the birds this year. Previously sunflowers were showing up almost anywhere the birds happened to drop the seed. The potatoes look good, I didn't notice any flaws. I'm not sure, but buckwheat may also grow with minimal water. It's a faster crop and if nothing else makes a decent "green mulch".

I'm in a temperate rainforest zone and planted garlic last autumn. We get more rain here than most of the UK and Ireland. I don't get rust. What you might be able to do is gathers some of the cloves that look good, plant them now for an autumn harvest or leave them in until next year. I grew mostly hard neck garlic, but some of the soft neck. One thing, don't water it for at least a week before harvest, but you likely know that.
@NearbyVeggies
@NearbyVeggies Ай бұрын
The roasted seed made me chuckle. Buckwheat doesn't grow too well in the summer for us but we do get it in at the end of summer for autumn ground cover. It doesn't make it to ripe seed however because the cold kills it.

Actually, it can be good to leave the potatoes in the soil even after the greenery is done. It can help them to firm up. “For storage potatoes, wait until the plants wither and turn brown, and then leave them in the soil for a further 3 weeks as their skins firm up. Harvest them for storage if there’s a threat of very cold or very wet weather.” West Coast Seeds (west coast of Canada, but the principle is universal)

Lots of flowers everywhere. Mimosas are indeed invasive but I just love the smell when they flower, lots of pollen though. It looks you'll have plenty of maracujás and ameixas this summer. I hope you enjoyed you short break but I'm glad to have your videos back 😅😊

Maybe a stupid question but how do you process all your potatoes and how do you store them so they don’t sprout right away? Lovely garden.
@NearbyVeggies
@NearbyVeggies Ай бұрын
Once the surface clay has dried, we put the potatoes in a sack and store them in the cool and dark. Also, we will probably eat those in a couple of months.

Otro año deberías considerar poner en la parcela de ajos encima a dos metros unas placas de polipropileno traslúcido, evitando ese tal vez exceso de lluvias 🧄🌿🧄🌿🧄💛

You Must dig with a fork to harvest potatoes. There will be some in deeper ground

As always so interesting, could you tell me the name of the orange bushes please
@NearbyVeggies
@NearbyVeggies Ай бұрын
I don't know the variety of the orange trees if that's what you mean, but the orange flowers which grow everywhere are californian poppies Eschscholzia californica. They might look like a bush because I have them on different levels to give the effect of height, but actually, they are a low growing annual that self seeds. Very beautiful and long flowering period.

Did I see lots of little artichokes going to seed? Do you trim, steam and marinate them?
@NearbyVeggies
@NearbyVeggies Ай бұрын
The little ‘artichokes’ are actually cardoons with edible stems, and we also have artichokes which we cooked in this video Building Steps to the Stone House (Artichokes for Dinner) kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4rMmnmmh9drhdk

Climate zone 8a (Switzerland) the average rain was almost double for most months. Lots of garlic (softneck) rost except those garden beds with insect netting... this really puzzles me.

Could be a coincidence or the covered beds get more air and drainage?
