Great tips. When I am done painting a room I pour the leftover paint in any jars, such as pickle jars an get rid of the big cans that aren't air tight and tend to rust. It's best to use a jar that fits the amount paint so there is no air and it will last for many years.. I also fill a tiny jar with the same color and keep it in the closet of the room for quick touch ups.
@AbundantlyMinimal4 жыл бұрын
That is a very clever tip!

Good tip. I am going to start doing this due to the fact you can see the color and it is air right.

Glass jars will create lumps or "skins" in the paint. Most hardware stores sell mini-paint cans. The $3.00 investment will save the paint in a way that will allow it to be used later. Additionally, paint cans are unbreakable - unlike glass jars.
@SammyMaeQ4 жыл бұрын
@@CrazyAuntVal I have successfully stored paint in glass jars for years. Cans have been a disaster. Choosing the contrainer size so it can be full is important.

I decluttered couple of things while i was watching this video: couple of baking trays, active clothing and some old jeans. I am sure few more ideas will pop up. Thank you for posting this video! We have been going to the donation centers almost on weekly basis. I am always exciting to see how the donation box is pilling up. From time to time we also take advantage of the deals from the thrift stores. The easier you get it, the easier you get rid of it if it is not for you.

One point with the cables (I work in tech support). Only declutter the ones you are certain don’t go to something. I can’t tell you how often I have customers who call and literally threw out their charging cable impulsively because of getting into a decluttering mood and forgetting what it was for. I like to keep mine in a decorated box with a lid on a shelf so if I don’t need it right away, I know very quickly where it is and I can find it easily. Edit: as a trained allied health pro (not working in the field anymore), I know many pharmacies have disposal bins for expired medications. Don’t talk to the staff they may turn you away, just look for a secured bin by the door usually.

Hi, I'm EXTREMELY OVERWHELMED with the amount of clutter I have. Hearing you explain it seems simple to do but actually doing is MUCH HARDER. I looked back at your old video of when you had lots of clutter and it's amazing to see where you are today. I pray that 2020 will be the year that I gain the strength & courage to tackle this ENORMOUS TASK. I think PAPER is my most difficult area since I feel the need to keep way too much.
@AbundantlyMinimal4 жыл бұрын
It is really difficult. There are so many different factors that influence the clutter we keep and there can be a lot of uncertainty and pain tied into it. I remember that feeling of being overwhelmed, but remember than anyone who makes progress with anything does it very slowly...often the shortcuts lead to longer roads. I love your plans for 2020!

The Minimalists have a Minimalism Game calendar that could help! You can check off all the things you got rid of that way and it starts with 1 thing on day 1! It’s a snowball effect.
@sarahthatcher1234 жыл бұрын
I think the most important thing to do is to just START....it can quickly go from overwhelm to excitement. Some keys are to start small ( just one drawer), start with easy things (not very sentimental risk...ie. food/ spices/ fridge/ or bathroom products). Try to schedule in the time...even if it is only 1/2 hour per week. Start with most commonly used areas of the home like the living room or bedroom ( not including clothes). Leave areas like storage rooms and garages until further along. Don't get 'hung up' on ANY 'RULES'. Do it YOUR WAY! Sounds like you would leave paperwork until later. Manage your expectations..for example, go through an area getting rid of the 'obvious' things that are EASY to get rid of. If you find yourself not being sure and really debating, don't spend too much time thinking about it...error on the side of keeping it and move on. This is how I did it and it really helped me to get a lot of the beneficial feelings/ results and not hit overwhelm. I found later on when I went through the same area again I saw more things I didn't need and I wondered why I thought I needed to keep it the first time ( but I did) it's part of the process. In so many ways it will be easier than you think and then there may be ways that it is harder than you expected..enjoy the journey and BE KIND TO YOURSELF! As one KZbinr said " it not about the 'Stuff', it's about YOU. So keep YOU in mind during the journey. Just start!

I am doing the minimalism game and it has worked for me. Decluttering was overwhelming for me before because I didn't have a plan with properly sized steps, but tried to do everything at once. (Marie kondo way doesn't work for sentimental hoarders I guess) Now I have a goal for each day and get to take a picture of and write down my results every day when I'm done. It makes me feel accomplished. I also have a tactique of picking one box, bag or shelf to work on at a time.

This is a great video. Thank you for the helpful, staight-forward advice. As another commenter said regarding tech cables and related items of that nature, don't get rid of them unless and until you are sure you can't use them. I discovered this the hard way a couple of times over the years. Here are a few other tips from my own experience: my mom uses a few old laundry cups as med cups now, having thoroughly washed them first, of course. Also, we have balled up a few old mismatched socks and we use those to help clean the lint trap in the dryer. We also cut up old plain t-shirts and use them as dust rags. I also frequent neighborhood donation bins with gently used items I no longer use. The bins are conveniently located around our city so I can easily take a bag of clothes, shoes, or books to be donated on my way to or from work or while running other errands. This makes it easy to regularly declutter in small amounts. Again, thank you for this helpful video.

A very good companion video to help declutter, it feels like you are with me, asking important questions about my stuff. Letting go of things start with letting go of some old habits or ideas. I held on to an address book for 25 years but many of the contacts in them have not been kept up, those persons no longer share my life. After so many years they probably moved and I dont feel I have anything to tell them. The friendship that I have kept over the years are the ones that matter now. I will throw that dress book. Thanks

Thank you ! I just moved to a smaller Home. Got rid of lots before the move, and even some after it ( just took some to donation today ! ). Picked up a great new ( gently used) winter jacket at donation place for twelve dollars which I love & am already wearing. Tomorrow it’s back to donation place w old, similar ( but a bit too small) jacket, and a guitar case I don't use. Still have waaaay too much stuff & resist decreasing my books, CDs, & papers. Working on it tho & purging SOME. I went from a 2 bedroom ( w small office type room, too, & small attic space) to a 1 bedroom with less kitchen cupboards, and some basement storage. Did lots of recycling, throwing out, & donating B4 move & just gotta keep going ! I think I’ll be adding more to my donation haul 2mrw ! It’s very satisfying once I’ve let it go ! Onward !

I decluttered a bit more from some already pared down areas: a roasting pan, two cake pans, a scarf that sheds, and a hat I don't like. I have plans to revisit my purses and jewellery. Your comment about distractions in the office makes me want to really get into that space and make it work better for me. I will remove everything decorative that doesn't serve a purpose and either find it another home or donate it. Every item in that space takes away from whatever task I'm trying to do! My office is actually chaos right now. It is housing some baby clothes that I'm planning to keep for two or three years until we know whether we're having a second child. It also holds some transitory items. I think I need to find a better home for those things. I will vacuum seal them and store them in the basement. Wish me luck! Expired products can sneak up on you. Last year I went thru my spices and found some of them were so old. I ended up looking up how long they were good for, it was eye opening. But it also made me think, if I haven’t used it in years, do I really need it anyway? Same thing happened when I decluttered my first aid kit. Now I know you may want some supplies for emergencies, but some of what I had were what I considered un-needed products and again, they were expired and I had never used them.

I believe I received the very gem I needed... at the end... "what in your office space distracts you?" Thanks, for referencing "your purpose" ... we all need that reminder!

Excellent video. Even though I’m pretty minimal now it got me thinking of some more stuff to let go of.

Pretty near to where I live, we have these boxes where people can leave books (I think their intended for you to trade a book, sort of a give one to get one concept) they don't want/need anymore. I have a few really great books I'm taking notes on as I read them and am planning on taking them to one of these book drops when I'm done. It's a really great way to declutter and give other people a chance to read good books for free.

I LOVE those! I honestly wish these types of centers or boxes existed in more places or even for more types of stuff.

Great video, thank you. You could get a nice couch cover to change it up. They are not expensive and a great idea 😊

For my spinner spice rack, I use a piece of painters tape and write the date I got it on the tape and put it on the bottom of the jar. herbs and spices only keep for so long.

You can also buy color dots like for garage sales at dollar stores. And permanent markers there to write on the bottles.

I'm about to turn 70 and am in the process of decluttering because, well, I . . . um . . . am running out of time to do all the projects I wanted to do and read all the books I have and--to be honest--I don't want someone to have to deal with all this when I'm gone. I love your suggestions and have already done a lot of them, including donating 6 coats and tossing 2 bags of VHS tapes. Several years ago, I got rid of half the things I had stored in my little walk-in closet, but it's time to tackle it again, so that will be my winter project. When I need incentive, I watch Hoarders--works like a charm to get me motivated.

Great tips Sarah. I also had a clean out of coats and jackets. Had them for some years but got tired of them. So passed them on. Even after decluttering there is always something we can recycle or give to others. I feel so much better and lighter with no extra things in my life. All the best.

I have realized that what I have was an emotional burden of accumulating things. Now in my new home I want less in our home to create a peaceful environment. 13:00 I'm a fitness instructor. I had/have sort of the opposite problem; I was keeping a "normal" wardrobe of slacks, jeans, shirts, etc. even though I get little use from these items nor do I even like wearing them. I just felt guilty because it's popular to yoga pants shame people for wearing active wear when not at the gym. Owning non-active wear for me is a waste of space and $ and is an inconvenience. I did it for years just to try to appease other people/societal norms.

Electronics was the only one left on the list I havent tackled yet. All the others on your list I have done over the years and havent back slid on any of them. 😁 With my favourite clothes I buy duplicates so I can wear them all the time. Ive kinda evolved into a uniform dresser😁 And this morning I accidentally tore one of my favourite summer tops. Thank goodness I have a duplicate😉👍

For the plastic bags in bags and how much space they take up you can fix this problem and store alot more and reuse them if you get an empty tissue box and stuff the bags inside. The Tissue box compresses a whole cupboard of bags into just 1 tissue box. Now when you need to change out the trash or need a bag just pull a bag out of the tissue box bag dispenser. You can have a couple tissue box bag dispensers and put one in the kitchen maybe one upstairs in the bathroom. As you use the bags keep replenishing them as you go on grocery trips and the excess bags depending how much you want to store can recycle them.
@AbundantlyMinimal4 жыл бұрын
This is a great tip for anyone who keeps plastic bags around! Thanks!
