That has been a main thing for me, I didn't want items in my home that are a pain to dust. For example, I was using a bookshelf for a tv stand, and all those pieces were so time consuming to dust. I decided a tv stand where everything is stored inside and nothing but the tv on top was much easier on me and the look/feel of the room!

I love your videos. I recently started decluttering. I have watched a lot of videos. They have helped me so much. I have donated at least 30 trash bags full. I got rid of the trash also. The more I get rid of the more I want to get rid of. I feel so happy now. My apartment looks so much better and bigger. I have 2 large closets to do next. I am on a roll. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I feel my space is cleaner more often because there was less clutter. It technically is as “dirty” as it always was. I still only clean the space as frequently as I always did. However, the space itself looked less cluttered. The reason for this was twofold. First, I had decluttered a lot so there was just less “stuff” that kept a permanent home in most areas. But 2nd, the amount of clutter that I left in each space that didn’t belong there was less because since there was less permanent clutter in each area, it made my accidental “clutter” more obvious. For example, my keys belong in an area in my bedroom. But sometimes I put them down on my dining room table when I walk into my house. I also sometimes put down the mail on this table. Since decluttering this space, it is very obvious when I walk into this room if I leave my keys or mail in this space. It screams - These don’t belong here! Where belong when I hadn’t decluttered they were just part of the clutter in the room.

This is why I keep losing things! I want to instantly declutter, even though I know it isn't possible. But that's one of the things that puts me off - the slow process. Yet, if I had started this when I first found out about decluttering, I would be living a more organized and harmonious life - right now! There's no time like the present!

It's a fun journey! I hope you enjoy it. Take your time, there is no hurry. Be smart about how you declutter, you could have value in most things you own and could sell them, also you can donate them and hand them down to friends/family. xx

This was really well done. I have found it to be true that I feel more free and more focused owning fewer items. My husband and I have been married for 29 years. I began decluttering at least five years ago, so our attics and crawl space are empty. We have a few items of ours in the basement, as well as boxes of items that belong to our kids, some of whom haven't quite settled into their adult lives. But what still "hangs over my head", so to say, are the five bins of family photos on a closet shelf. They are organized for the most part, but I need to do a final purge, which will be very time consuming. I'm planning to pick out the best, scan them, and order some photo books. My kids and grandkids will have less to deal with when I'm gone, and will enjoy going through the books. I'll feel much lighter after this job is done. Thanks for linking to John and Stuart! I'm subscribing to both!

I love the "making photo books" approach! My mom was photo obsessed and I was always raised to NEVER throw out photos, even if it is a blurry photo of someone's neighbor dressed up for a halloween party...it has taken a lot, but I am finally down to one small box of loose photos and all of them that matter to me are in books. So rewarding to have them put together in a way that makes them accessible.

Another benefit that I have noticed as I have improved at decluttering is that I can run my household more efficiently because I know what is actually in my house. When I have a small household problem I can ask myself "Do I have something on hand that can solve this problem?" As I think it over I am much better at coming up with a solution because I know what is at my disposal and where everything is. When things are super cluttered you find yourself going out to buy things you don't really need because you forgot you already had something similar that would work.
@AbundantlyMinimal

I started this process a couple months ago. Got rid of quite a bit. I thought I was done but frankly there is still too much stuff. I find myself re-evaluating my activities in the past 9 years, which i enjoyed tremendously but now I feel I changed. I no longer feel the same desire I had and want to extend minimalism in my gardening style, less plants, more uniformity and focus points with empty space in between. I also want to let go of a whole bunch of files and the filing cabinet. Since I started this process I became more creative, I picked-up painting. I always felt like I could not draw or paint and now I spend countless hours developing my skills. I really enjoy discarding the unnecessary. I enjoy spaciousness like it is silence. I used to always have noise on but no more. 🙏

I thoroughly enjoyed this video Sarah: and pardon me if I’m repeating myself: i moved out of home at 17 I have just turned 45: that’s 28 years of boarder line hoarding; I’d move it from house to house. I had my children late (5 and 7) and as you know I’m moving. You have helped me immensely. I have been able to go back over the house to even further de clutter (can you believe!?) anyway the sad truth is: having so much stuff so much clutter and such a huge house to fill with all of that: really took away from what matters most to me: my children: I was always busy cleaning and dealing with clutter: I deeply regret this: what my children needed from me most was quality time and a happy Mother: I can’t undo the past: but here’s to new beginnings as I’m now after much hard physical work and soul searching: ready to start reaping the benefits of letting go of mental/physical clutter and start enjoying the people and activities etc that matter to me the most!

This weekend, on Feb 9, the day before my 50th birthday, I experienced a Tibetan Bowl Ceremony. It was the greatest decluttering I have ever achieved. I released guilt and doubt from my youth and from the years raising my children. This was an area that seemed to be impossible to get rid of; yet, I finally was able. Sara, thank you for helping me to release some much of my physical clutter over the last two years which helped create the energy to complete this last area of decluttering/cleansing.

Great video. I love the silence idea and being in the moment idea. After finally decluttering I can now sit in complete silence without thoughts of "things I need to do" cluttering my mind and what's left is happiness and joy which I was never able to even recognize because I was overwhelmed with clutter.

I think we sometimes need to be careful about the concept of "minimalism"... particularly if we grew up with some form of early deprivation /austerity.. (My mother died suddenly when I was a young child..) As part of my healing journey I progressed from making "small polite paintings" in my professional Art practice, to re-training as a sculptor, which is much bigger, needs more equipment, & causes me & my work to take up more space in the world.. The reverse of reducing down to minimalism.

I am in awe at this collaboration. All three of you are such great speakers with such insight into the topic. Ron and Stuart weren't on my radar but I'm off to check them out! Time for myself and my family was what drew me to minimalism. We had too many toys, books and just THINGS that I thought were needed to make happy memories, but those were in fact preventing us from our goal. Being in the present is something I still need to work on. I think it's more of a mental clutter for me in that I have trouble saying no but I'm working on it. Thank you, thank you so much for your message! I need to now watch it again 😂

Thank you. I u so much . Just came across the video. I have started decutting this weekend. I started small with my dinner room table. I didn’t want to get overwhelmed. A lot of things resonated with me, especially about the mental cutter I am dealing with. I am going to keep the process going. Again, thank you 😊😊

I know I need to declutter but I often think about items or things I have especially from people who are no longer here or in my life. However I feel that letting go of things that were moments in my life, then I’ll be sorry that I let it go. I’m a sentimental person and I do often feel trapped and not wanting to let go of a happier time in my life. I’m battling stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, and it’s a little scary for me to let go of those things and or moments that are never gonna be in my life again. Bottom line, letting go is difficult for me. Thank you for this video 🙏🏼💜🌹

Thank you so much for sharing, Lisa. Sentimental items can be such a challenge, especially for items from those who are no longer with us. Sometimes I like to think about keeping a few more significant items from loved ones or time periods in life rather than everything, because then I feel like I am able to celebrate them more and put more emphasis on each of those items.

I started decluttering during lockdown a 2 bedroom apart and ended up throwing/recycling at least 50% of my stuff. After lockdown i continued drawer by drawer until all the house was done.I found a new place a smaller place where i feel way better and moved only the stuff that made the cut.I still declutter each Sunday and it's amazing how much more stuff I still have to give away/recycle.Like u said in the video i was holding on to stuff that I considered I might still use but ended up not so I went ahead and let it go.I still have so much to do before I am a true minimalist but so happy with the progress.

Hi Sarah. Hope you and Jake are well. Thank you so much, once again for another great video. Enjoyed Ron and Stuart's videos too and have subscribed. I totally agree with you about getting rid of things not on the first go. I have gone back to things, not straight away, but when I have, I have wondered why on earth I was keeping it and have put it into the donate or recycling pile! Sometimes it's the third or fourth time I have gone back! I had a weigh in on Monday and have lost 19kg since last March! So I am over the moon. I still have a long way to go. I am classing the weight loss as part of my decluttering and eating much better now. I did what Stuart did and gave up alcohol last March too. My liver has been improving. The cause of my NAFLD was not through alcohol though, but through prescription medications that were prescribed by my Doctor for over twenty years for many ailments. I gave up all meds last March too Stuart! I do agree about doing things you love without feeling guilty. I love reading and making cards, but only read for a short while at night in bed before I go to sleep. I havent made a card for months. I hope to get back to it soon when I have decluttered lots more!! I do so believe in the Angels. I learnt how to Reiki myself and do agree with Stuart about what you believe in. I even ask them to find us a parking space sometimes and cannot believe how it works! Positive thinking is a good thing, if you can. Reiki taught me to get rid of negative thoughts, people and things from all aspects of my life. It's not always possible for everyone all of the time though. Silence is good too. If I am on my own, I never have music or the TV on now. It is so true, we have many mementos from events like holidays! Why?? I dont know! I liked what Ron said too. I am pretty much a vegetarian now, but can honestly see myself becoming a vegan at some point in the near future. I do think I need to try to live without milk, cheese and eggs. And finally, I am really hoping that I will be able to live more in the present once I have decluttered some more. We miss out on so much. So if you havent fallen asleep with my comments, Sarah, I would just like to thank you once again for everything. Take care. Love Deb xx

Let’s say you go to Niagara Falls. Souvenirs are big like at any place you visit. So you get flags, snow globes, etc. Now with iPhones you can take great pictures of the place and some with family and friends. It gives you more pleasure when you look back at the photos. You might even have a couple that you want to frame . If you need to buy I limit it to one item that I am pretty sure I can use.

Hooray 😊! I have been following you for quite a while. I like your practical approach to minimalism. It helps to keep me grounded in my journey. I've also been following Ron for a few weeks..... It took longer for him to hit my KZbin radar, so I am very pleased that you're bringing more awareness to his channel. I like to get a variety of approaches to find what works best for me. I don't know that I am quite ready to face Stuart's path, but I think I may find it valuable in the future so thanks for the introduction. I am a 3rd (probably more) generation hoarder and having a mother who grew up in the war and very environmentally conscious my upbringing was about holding on to the things that could be useful, preventing waste, being frugal and future proofing my existence. It was quite a mindset to overcome. I still use these core values but try to apply them in a less materialistic way. Though my mother still struggles with this occasionally, she is also on a decluttering journey based on the Swedish Death cleaning method so we support each other with our different approaches.

@Stuart Carter I do🙂. I appreciate your incorporation of the spiritual injecting another aspect for a more holistic approach. I simply have too many challenges already to add to my plate atm and I have found that such a deep exploration of self and spirituality can bring up a can of worms that I simply would not have the strength to deal with at this point in my journey. Thank you for the reply and implied support ☺️

These are the videos I needed! I listened to kon mari audiobook in 2017 and decluttered/tidied my whole apt and belongings in storage at my family’s home but now minimizing again. This time tackling much deeper issues w my belongings as I streamline/let go of those items I was attached to but not serving me etc. I’m going slow but I’ve done a great job over past 6weeks. I have to be proud of my progress abd not judge that I can’t snap my fingers and be a minimalist.. Others would have said we/I was already but my closet said otherwise🌸

@@AbundantlyMinimal just found this recent reply because I wanted to talk about living in the present. I have photos in a small box & my college degree, most pictures now are sent from son on grandkids( grown now), then I just save in Google photos. I don't even look at the pics in the box for 20\30 years because I will get sad longing for past times or people. I have 3 pics on mantle of parents, grandparents, sister_all passed, but that's good enough for me__ if I go to that box, it would be too much. The mantle is enough..sometimes I just say -I love you, miss you💜. People like my house because I don't have stuff and clutter!! Take care_ enjoy__from Northern California..beautiful weather🌴😅🚙. I loved the silence part of this!!!! (I'm no where near being a minimalist but the silence this touched me)... I'm a collector of toys,books,games... I play all my games and pick up all my books read everynight even if its just a little(its not tho) I redress my dolls and move all my stuff around I like habits and routines... idk about holding me back but for sure I have moments when I feel overwhelmed by say dusting or I look around and sometimes feel like I have too much stuff but idk if I want to not have my stuff just because sometimes I feel overwhelmed or is that the reason why people do minimalism????? Maybe I should get rid of some stuff not like yall tho also why do these videos keep coming up in my feed I legit mostly watch room tours or game room tours... stop trying to make me a minimalist KZbin its not gonna happen!... cool video tho ;)

It is great to hear that your belongings bring you great joy in life! That matters! I think minimalism is more about getting rid of the items that aren't useful and don't make us happy, which provides us with the time to do more of what matters. :)
