Using a painting respirator is still recommended, you can develop something called 'painters lung' because the paint particles can adhere to your lungs. If that builds up enough you are in trouble.
@arandomlostsoul7534 ай бұрын
This 100%. Breathing in aerosolized particles isn't healthy.
@BloodWolfXZ4 ай бұрын
Definitely this. Even solid, non-reactive particles are bad to have in your lungs. You're supposed to wear a mask in a dust/sand storm for a very good reason. You don't need a full on Darth Vader paint respirator, just an n95 should be fine. And do vent your cardboard box outside, don't be an animal. Put the box itself in the windowsill if you have to.
@tankmlee4 ай бұрын
one question for you can you find a single cancer case linked to miniature quality acrylic paint? ill wait
@Boljarin4 ай бұрын
@@tankmlee there are more ways to reduce your quality of life, and even die, than just cancer. Google "painters lung and lung emphysema" to learn more about painters lung and what it can cause. If you want to keep spraying without an painting respirator that's on you, but information should be out there that it's not without risk. Even if you just use acrylic paints. The quality of paints doesn't matter because the airbrush turns the paint into a particle mist that wants to adhere to stuff, that's the whole point. Your lungs are not immune to this. At the very least use a high quality dust mask. But $$$ wise a good quality 3M painting mask is cheaper than a box of Flayed Ones these days. You would be shocked to see how quickly the filters on a 3M turn dark because all the paint it catches.

The Iwata Eclipse HP-CS is my daily driver and I have zero complaints. It's an excellent airbrush and I've had no problems using it for going on 5 years now. In fact, I also bought a H&S Infinity a couple of years ago and I prefer the Iwata. It's less fussy than the Infinity, but it isn't as good for detail work. I would heartily recommend the Iwata Eclipse as a starter airbrush to anyone interested in trying it out.

I drive a cab, and I listen to podcasts while doing so because radio stations suck. I was listening to this episode when I picked up a painter - paint smearedwhite clothes, and all - from the casino. He didn't say much on the ride to the office he was remodeling/living in(?), but at the end, when he got out, he slurred, "Airbrushin' ain't nothin'. You're better off just buying the thousand dollar one and getting it over with." So, there you have it, folks. Advice from a real-life professional painter.
@nuclearfishing43542 ай бұрын
Respiratory therapist here. You should properly set up and use a fume hood, for the exact reasons he stated. Yes the paint is dry. It floats through the filter, through the fan blades, and through the papertowel. It then enters the air, and floats in the air, for you or others to inhale. And that is bad. Use a respirator, and a fume hood if inside.
@khanayudash24754 ай бұрын
You absolutely should get a compressor with a tank - I actually use a Kobalt compressor from Lowes. It's a little louder than an airbrush compressor, but really solid for the price (and for the pressure it hits). Built in regulator, and the tank helps deal with water in the line if you happen to be in a humid environment, while also giving you more consistent pressure
@khanayudash24754 ай бұрын
To be clear, the tank holds 120 PSI, the regulator drops that from 120 in the tank to 25-35 at the brush while I work. Also highly recommend a particuulate filter for every compressor, most airbrush compressors come with one already attached, shop style ones generally don't, they cost less than $10.

Thanks guys for this video! Couple things to add from experience. - I never use an extraction hood personally, so anyone worried about space, you don’t have to worry too much. As every drop of paint is dry within about 18in from the nozzle. Benefits of living somewhere with low humidity, HOWEVER you will need to vacuum the area the day after and you will notice a fine soot in the colours you were using. Use this information as you will. - Remember, if unsure about what airbrush you want and are considering investing. Buying a pretty nice one will allow you to resell at a decent price to recoup your money if you drop the hobby or really don’t like airbrushing for some reason. I went for the Harder and Steenbeck Ultra 2024, as has all the fancy notches Brad was talking about (and are pretty meh at best) but it will not let you skip the L shape movement they talked about which can cause clogs. And was $150. Luckily I really liked it so don’t have to sell it. - Buy a nozzle cleaning kit. They’re dirt cheap and save an insane amount of time, it’s pretty much a nozzle shaped blade that will scoop out any gunk or dried paint from not quite flushing 100% out in your last session within the nozzle, handy for when you’re starting as you will likely block it at some point. Some people just use the needle to try and scrape out or shove the blockage through the tip, but that’s risking damaging something. They cost $6 on Amazon and commonly bundled with the cleaning pot Brad recommends as a nice stand (I have that pot too and also use it as a nice stand) I just need to learn how to use it for finer details, but it all takes time.
@UriskOfTheFae3 ай бұрын
Yes! The nozzle cleaning needle has been invaluable to me. It's also super useful, for this with Iwata airbrushed, to have one with the notch for taking the nozzle on and off to avoid shearing the dummy delicate threads (and proceeding to throw a hissy fit over the thing for three weeks afterwards. Totally not still salty about my own mistakes.)

@40:00 Regarding having something block your hand from going back too far to have too much paint go through, H&S made the ULTRA which as an external collar you can move around with different allowances for the trigger to go back. So you could buy the newest ULTRA and then use the collar to control your trigger pull for fine detail, priming, etc.

When I was young, I built and painted model airplanes and tanks with my dad, occasionally using his syphon air brush. Now I use that same compressor with an Iwata Eclipse, its probably a 25+ year old compressor. I cant quite dial in the PSI appropriately, but I think its shooting my paint at 20+ psi, this being my key issue in my setup. This wonderful discussion made it clear; yeah, I need a new compressor. Thanks for a comprehensive guide and discussing differences between the cheap and up airbrushes!

Regarding fume hood options - I picked up the smallest Wagner spray tent (which is still like 3 feet tall or something), shoved a spare box fan behind it and a cheap HVAC filter in front of that and then set up my station up in front of the same window that is my vent location for my printer (which is fully enclosed and ventilated because apartment). Was maybe $50 factoring in the box fan that I just...had sitting around. Half the price of a dedicated fume hood and still better than a cardboard box. That said, getting started a cardboard box with an old sheet on the ground is fine, I'd be more worried about having a cheap particle respirator or mask for when you varnish, metallics or do any oil stuff before a fume hood.

I also started with a Youfu portable to practice airbrushing, that's amazing! I gifted it to my older brother after I upgraded my stuff. I DID do compressor to airbrush just to be sure that it had enough air pressure. Also, it's definitely got an airbrush by definition alone, Master I use now is so much better all around. My workhorse is still a Master G233 ($40), which is about as budget as you can get with an airbrush that isn't just "an airbrush by definition". I also use a Master Compressor with a 3 Liter tank and dual fans ($140 - $150). Between these two, you have everything you need, a working airbrush with 3 different needle/nozzle sizes, a hose, holsters and a adjustable air pressure that runs pretty quiet. The parts for the airbrush are also easily replaced in case of anything that happens, because for $12 you can get a whole new set of nozzles and needles. I do have the very same Neo, Hobby Lobby carries them and their replacement needles and nozzles. UPDATE: There's another contender, there's a NEOECO SJ83 Airbrush available on Amazon that's $40 and probably the best bang for your buck I've seen from any budget airbrush I've ever seen. I honestly want to just own one just so I have it as a workhorse that can almost anything with a little care and practice. I also built a DIY spray booth, I don't use anything that's particularly toxic, but I still encourage using a respirator, paint particles aren't fun in your lungs. I use a thinner and cleaner combo that was shared by Barbatos Rex, I like it a lot more than store bought thinners and store cleaners are TOXIC and hurt my lungs and made me dizzy. My little bro and I made the booth with a cheap, cardboard box, a headlamp, a furnace filter and a box fan. Grand total for most of it is like $25, the headlamp is the most expensive part. Don't get something like a California air compressor, it's all purpose, WAY more than you ever need for a hobby, has a lot more upkeep and no basic hookups for airbrushes since it'll do everything form airbrushing, to filling your tires to blowing the leaves off your driveway.

I got the cult of paint airbrush, compressor, spray booth, etc. It was a gift from my wife as she's very supportive in my hobby & she came into a little inheritance & treated me as she knew I'd been thinking of an airbrush. I keep trying at using it, but I've had issues using it as a total novice. I'll keep at it, but sometimes I find it frustrating to use that it scares me off a little. The very least though so worth it to prime with & I'm sure I'll get my confidence up on it. Would highly recommend mid range 1st, though to learn with.

I use a large 10 gal 120ish psi compressor. It works great. They have regulators that set the output pressure different than the tank pressure. I set the output at 55 psi. I have a 2nd regulator attached to my desk that I use to set the final pressure to 15-40 psi. Harder and Steenbeck infinity gang.

12 years ago I bought my first airbrush, it was an Iwata kit with an oil free compressor (no maintenance) and a double action gravity feed .35mm airbrush (Eclipse), plus some books and paints. The whole thing was $400 CAD and there weren't many other options at the time, if I was buying today it could have been a lot cheaper. That said, it's still chugging along like a champ and I'm still using the original airbrush. I also bought a siphon feed airbrush (Neo) for doing priming, which was probably overkill but very useful when doing speedpaint projects. Water builds up in the line because the compressor gets hot, hot air holds more water. The line is colder than the compressor, so the air cools and water condenses out of the air inside the line. Be sure to blast the empty airbrush before you start using paint to get any condensed water out of it. What I recommend to people getting an airbrush: 1.) Filter mask > dust mask > no mask. Don't breathe the dust. 2.) Empty 17mm dropper bottles and tiny funnels (off Amazon) for mixing paint outside of the airbrush cup. They are cheap. I get stickers and write the formula on the bottle for future reference. 3.) Liquitex White Ink for zenithal pre-shading works way better than white paint. 4.) Don't forget your compressor needs to cool down occasionally. If it feels hot, stop. 5.) You need to thin paint way more than when using a regular brush. Like some paints I'll thin down 1:1 with water. Most paints it's like 1 part water 2 parts paint. Some brands come pre-thinned, but GW Air paints still need a bit of thinning.

I really wish you had looked at the H&S Ultra 2024. It's an absolute dream of a starter brush for $100. It has interchangeable parts with the other HS brushes, German engineering, a collar that is set up to teach a beginner how far to pull back (It has an open setting and you can remove it), is simply made so it's easy to clean, and has just been the best starter brush at the price point.

I use a pretty large compressor, you can add a pressure regulator to the outlet that your hose attaches too. Works like a charm.

Upgraded from a random cheapy to the H&S Ultra 2024 and that thing is a godsend. The settings dial makes things SO easy, and its just over a c-note, so comparatively "cheap" as far as high quality airbrushes go.

Great video! Together we can break the stigma of the airbrush. Another great option that was left off this is the Badger Sotar 2020. A little cheaper than the Iwata and has the control of the dials like the Infinity. I've heard a lot of good things.

the problem of buying an airbrush isn't buying the airbrush itself. it required you to get many other things in order for an airbrush to work. you need a compressor to pump the air, the cleaner station to clean the airbrush, the airbrush station in order to prevent the paint to get into your respiratory system. This also not include the specific type of paint, flower and many other things. another important things to note is that airbrush willl and huge amounts of space from your room and your painting table which is why I have a problem dealing with airbrush since i didn't have an actual house and live in the condominium.

Out of those, you realistically (if you intend to use water acrylics) need paint (brand and whether it's airbrush or brush optimised is irrelevant) airbrush + compressor (plus hose and connector if not included), pair of gloves (not required, but helps to keep hands clean, I use rubberised gloves from work), face mask (not those with separate filters, cheap one from construction store), few pipettes and plastic vodka shot "glasses" and two larger cups for paint mixing/thinning/cleaning, 0,5 L bottle of isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning purposes) and few cardboard sheets to catch whatever does not stick to model. No need for dedicated stations - they are nice, but you can do without them Though if you want to airbrush alcohol-based (or lacquers) paints, you better have that mask (preferably those with switchable filters) plus it's a good idea to leave window open (it's a good idea for any airbrushed paint, but especially lacquers and enamels). I have airbrush cleaner, but I use it as TET refills - for cleaning, I either use water with few drops of thinner or IPA

Save cleaning station with ice cream box with water and a drop of dishsoap/winshieldwiper fluid (or just clean mostly particulate free water if you're lucky as i am to have it out of the tap). Respirator mask is good to have no matter what if you arent brush priming your minis. Paint depends, you can use regular acrylics for it with medalch and cheapest triol from local stores, but if you're paying for the brand paints the airbrush equivalents are literally the same price. Thinner and flow aid in turn are just mix of water with either alch, glycerol, acetone, citric acid (yes the powedered one for cooking) or butyl ethers which make up half of the industrial/wall and car paint cleaners (all of which are combined with most sold in 1l bottles cheaper than even a single "start painting" citadel pot set) at 2 to 10% of those to 80~90 water. Space is the real concern that is fully understandable.

If you already have space to paint minis you have space to airbrush. Most airbrush compressors will be medium-large toaster sized and can fit under the table, maybe propped up on a box or stool if your hose is short or if you have to change the psi a lot. There are spray booths out there that are collapsible, if you're real cheap and nasty like me you can even use an old pizza box to catch any excess paint. The case my airbrush came with is about the size of your average black library novel and I've added 2 extra needles + nozzles, an airbrush cleaning kit, a couple of eye droppers and there's still space.

As a "slap chop" enthusiast with access to surprisingly good dollar store spray primer I rarely use my airbrush, tbh, but I can recommend The Army Painter Air range of paints because they work well as brush on paints too, particularly over a white zenithal, giving you great bang for your buck. Like Contrast paints AP Speed Paints work great through the airbrush too.

I got the Airbrush from your affiliate link last year to try it out. I didn’t do the best to maintain it so I was looking for a full setup eventually and have unironically been awaiting this video for a while now.

Just to clarify, we don't have affiliate links anywhere. Just links to make things easier. We don't get anything for selling you on this stuff other than helping you find something you'll hopefully like.

Sorry if this has been said before but H&S has put out a great starter airbrush that falls right between the Neo and the Eclipse. The Ultra 2024 is a brush which acts as sort of a teaching tool - having both a dial mechanism in the center of the brush which acts like a changeable locknut (to limit pullback for paint - the thing Brad didn’t like) that’s set up for “Prime”, “Base”, Highlight layers “I-III” (as well as a full pullback non-lock), as well as a lock in the trigger which prevents pullback for paint if the trigger isn’t pressed down for air. It may not be all necessary once those basics have been assimilated, but it’s a great brush for starting out, and it’s only $110 MSRP. (Also, saw a couple guys playing Horde Mode the other day down here in SoCal. It was awesome to see, especially with Orks as the Horde. 😁)

The Infinity is just THAT GOOD. This is the one time the German Small/Medium-sized enterprise meme actually holds up. It is just pure quality. It looks beautiful, it feels amazing, its easy to clean, the fit is great, its superb in your hand. You suddenly feel in control, you no longer feel the sort of surprise and randomness you get with worse ones. The Harder and Steenbeck Infinity is worth it and you cant change my mind.

The AK paints leaving a film is very interesting. I use mostly AK (3rd gen) paints through my airbrush and have never experienced this film. I'm interested if you're using the recommended AK thinner with the paints or another brand of thinner entirely. I'm still not convinced brand specific thinners make any difference, but as people seem to suggest it does matter for airbrushing, I've always used the recommended thinner for the paint. Maybe this actually does makes a difference? I've had films when using acrylic varnishes and then cleaning the airbrush with Isopropyl instead of rinsing with water first. But that was an easy lesson just wash with water first, then use iso, otherwise the iso will react with the varnish and turn to goop immediately. And a last quick tip, if you use flow improver with an airbrush, make sure it is AIRBRUSH flow improver. Flow improver made for brush work is designed to help paint stick together. This is counter to what an airbrush is trying to do to the paint, which is essentially blow it apart (atomise it.) The names are similar, but they have different chemistry and do not work the same!

I have a "youfu" aquarium airbrush. I upgraded the actual airbrush to a harder/steinbeck pretty quick, but everything works just fine. I leave it permanently plugged in. I paint a TON of minis, and do some small scale commission painting. I do wish I could get the PSI up a bit for white paints, but otherwise it's fine. Everyone should own one (at least)

super excited to see your take on airbrushing! I started with a Yuofu, it did the trick until the airbrush fall appart (literally) then I switched for a kit with a small compressor in it (the size of two hard drive stacked up) and it does what I need. is it as good as a "normal" compressor? No, but it does what I need it to do, costed 90$ with a very nice airbrush in it, and solve the issues I would have with a normal/decent compressor (I live in a small appartment with paper fine wall and I do not go super duper crazy on my airbush technic, so it was a perfect compromise). EDIT : thank you guys and thanks Berilio !
