Terrific review! I have avoided the 'siren's call' of this game because all I ever heard about was how beautiful it is. I can see that myself, and it is beautiful. But I want to play the game not just look at it, and your review honed right in on what I wanted to know. Thank you for your review.

A good game shouldn't be defined by how attractive the art is.....

I think I'll let the *Hype* fall a bit before bying it. Yeah I know Bruno K. arts are incredible, but for me in Montreal, Quebec, this game is over 50$ so I have to choose my games wisely before buying them. I'll play with someone who has it and will see if the *Playing* is worth (Not the art).

Even at $40 in the us it's still fairly high for a card game. I had super high hopes for this and it was barely talked about in the live show at gencon. I think the buzz died down quite a bit once people started playing it. That worries me enough not to preorder and wait it out.

I think this game looks fantastic, especially the thematics of the game itself (not exclusively about the artwork). I love these intrigue-like games, reminds me of a little of Lords of Waterdeep where you all vying for control over important pieces/cards and your actions/choices can help or cripple your opponents! While it doesn't use a worker placement mechanic, I still like the idea of using allies and/or pearls to buy favor and aim to control importance landmarks! It's simple game with a few layers or strategy and pressing luck! I like the variant covers and trying to see about getting a specific one :p

great review Dan, thank you. Ya, it's good to let some of the buzz pass before making the call. I've been so intrested in both Abyss and Black Fleet but I wanted to see how it shakes out. Still, the art and the components and the enjoyable gameplay make this one a buy for me. Did you try Black Fleet?! :)

I will be reviewing Black Fleet in the coming 2 weeks most likely. I have played it and like it quite a bit for a family style pick up / deliver / take that game. Tom just reviewed it today as well.

Huh... I see a lot in common between this and splendor, but Abyss seems like it is a little more complex. I haven't had a chance to play either yet, but I'm looking forward to trying out both!

Yes sadly I did (not on purpose). Usually I look at the box right before I film but all I saw was a crazy scary monster! :)
