That speed was not going to beat, or even keep up with the Ferrari GTO - its main rival. That's why Peter Brock designed the coupe version shown here. Shelby could definitely recognize top driving talent when he saw it, and he saw it in Bob, who was racing Corvettes at the time. Shelby called Bob up and starts by saying "I got you a ticket on flight such and such and you'll be coming into LAX or whatever airport and you'll be driving # whatever Cobra." Bob quickly cut him off and said, "Hold on, I didn't even say I'd do it." Shelby's response was...."Well, do you want to drive the son of a bitch or don't you?" Bob's reply was something like "OK, since you put it that way. Bob thought to himself, If I learn anything useful, I'll take it back and use it on the Corvette! The rest was history, as they say, and I don't believe he ever drove a Corvette in competition again! The other cool moment with Bob was when Shelby told him you're going to Europe and race for Alan Mann Racing, the Ford racing arm in the U.K. He was also told by Shelby that he would be the #1 driver. Well, Alan Mann had a much different way of racing and he told Bob you'll be #3 behind two British drivers, and if you don't want to race, then head back to the U.S.! The thing that really pissed off Bob was when Mann told him what order to finish in. Bob could not believe what Mann was saying and he promptly told Mann "I don't know how you do it here in England, but in America, we race to win!
