You can find required replacement parts & tools here:
Nissan AC Clutch Assembly: www.amazon.com...
Entire AC compressor kit: www.amazon.com...
Clutch holding tool: www.amazon.com...
Snap ring pliers: www.amazon.com...
You can also replace drive belt while you are there: www.amazon.com...
(these are Amazon affiliate links)
Tips:
That bolt was on "Loctite" and required enormous patience and effort. The easiest way to take it out is to use impact drill. Also get decent long snap ring pliers.

Did it exactly how you did it and it burned out the new clutch..Did some more research and found out there's small spacers in between the clutch and the pulley...Thats what caused the new clutch to burn out,..

You made the task look a lot easier than it is...that is why I had a pillow dressed like you and choked it out during the times I lost it...haha. Over all great video. I had same problem with the aluminum screw. I was avoiding taking the condenser off at all costs. I used a Dremel to do the same concept of a flat head and although I am pretty big, could not get it to budge. Took my little Ryobi impact drill and got the flat head locked in the slot and several trigger pulls later, it came loose. I might have missed the portion where you discussed the washers in the clutch plate. I put the same in that came out and it would not engage. I removed a few and when it engaged the steel was squealing since the spacing was still to much. Removed one at a time until only one washer, and it engaged solidly and did not squeal anymore. Thanks for putting the video together, it saved me about $600 from a shop visit.

Yea, guilty 😬. It was one of the most painful repairs I've ever done! But you'll probably agree, nothing can beat that feeling of accomplishment when everything was done & you know you saved some good $$$ on top of that!

Did this on my wife's 08 Altima. Cost me $105 for dealership diagnose (to make sure that it was the compressor clutch) + $155 new clutch from ebay + $25 for good quality split ring pliers. Dealership wanted $980 to replace the whole compressor. Your video saved me $700..... Thanks man ..... I did have issues getting that dam bolt out. I cut it like you did but still stripped it so I cut deeper and split the bolt head right off. Had to weld a nut onto the broken bolt, than it came out easy

Thanks for the video. I just used this as a guide on my 2008 sentra. It had voltage to the compressor, no leaks, and pressure would not change on the low side (i was trying to recharge it at first) when I turned on the a/c. I stumbled across this video and before I replaced the whole compressor I did this clutch repair and the A/C is ice cold again. Thanks a lot Tips for anyone doing this on a 2008-2012 sentra, Don't even try the job without a good sent of snap ring pliers, that open at least an inch. I used a cheap set at first that didn't even open wide enough. If using air tools, the screw driver trick from the video works great, just use a flat head to stop the clutch from moving and an air ratchet will spin the 10mm bolt right out. Mine came off on the first shot even with the car being through 7 New England winters of salt. Also the part number here has the correct magnet size but as far as the pulley the one amazon sent was way too big so I reused my stock pulley/bearing.

Thanks for the video - the trick to removing the screw is heat. If you heat the screw (heat gun or propane torch) the loctite will loosen and the screw is easy to remove.

Thanks for the video. Successfully installed the new AC clutch and AC is working great again. I know this saved me probably $800-$900. Only had 42k on my Altima when ac quit working. The bolt head was very difficult as you highlighted and had to notch as recommended. Also needed a second person to keep it from rotating. The top plate also was a bear getting off but finaly was able to pry it off by rotating and prying. I went ahead and replaced the belt while I was in there. Thanks again, much apprecied!

Forgot to mention the clearance or gap in the clutch. Different sizes of washer accommodate for this. As far as for those that don't know if the clutch is bad, a simple continuity test between the red and black wire will do. Checking for voltage across the two wires is your first step, to make sure that the AC climate control, fuse, and relays are all working properly. Great video !!! and Yes!!! eBay is the best place to purchase your parts. Just bought one for under $18 free shipping got here in 2 working days.

Thanks for the video. .. replaced mine and it did not go smoothly, but was expected. Yes, the bolt is difficult to get out. It is an M6 x 1.0 16mm...recommend having replacement on hand as will probably have to damage original to get out. Also, the snap ring holes are of a smaller diameter... large pliers in the set I had tips would not fit the holes, and the smaller ones could not open the rings enough. Ended up grinding down the tips on a larger set. And of course the ring angles were such that had tough time getting at them. But in the end it worked and saved $$'s.

Hi there, Im just a girl who comes from a very frugal lifestyle. I appreciate this video after watching many. I like tinkering with these DIYs when I can to save a pile of money. The clutch does not engage when the AC is on my 2009 altima 3.5 SE but I can spin it by hand freely. It blows hot and the pressure is where it should be with AC tester. I ordered and now received the AC clutch and am excited to replace it. Thanks everyone for all the input as it all helps except for the negative comments that I simply pass over. Anyone who offers free advice is welcomed. It is the viewer who decides what to do with the info. Don't be negative. In my replacement clutch, it tells me to make sure I put the required washers for the appropriate spacing in the clutch assembly. How do I know what is appropriate for my car? I do know that the metal tab that holds the wires at the edge prevents it from sitting flush inside. Any ideas on this spacing. There was one comment but it didn't give me the info I needed. Thanks for all you share.

As far as gap, Nissan repair manual says it should be between 0.3 - 0.6 mm (0.012 - 0.024 in). I used original OEM Nissan replacement clutch, and it worked flawlessly. I didn't have to adjust the gap at all or use any spacers.

It all depends where it's located in your car. You're lucky if you have easy access and space around the clutch. Usually it's very problematic to take it off the compressor, especially if it is a press fit. You'll probably will need additional tools that you may not have. Rent them at AutoParts if possible. I had a hard time to unscrew that bolt cuz it was sit on Locktite.

You're right. That doggone hex head bolt is nearly impossible to remove. I stripped out the head with an electric impact wrench yesterday. Couldn't get a good angle on it. Now I'm waiting for a set of bolt extractors, easy outs, and extension bars to come in. And I also ordered a longer 14 mm wrench for extra leverage on the idler pulley. What a PITA job... if only I could get the bolt out, the rest seems like a walk in the park! Thanks for making this video.... just to be sure, the bolt isn't right hand threaded, correct?

Well, mine was a miserable failure. I could not get that bolt to budge. I tried drilling it out and using a bolt extractor, but no dice. It was actually much quicker and easier to replace the whole compressor which I ended up doing today. If I had to do it all over again, I would pull the compressor out to try changing the clutch assembly. Would have been much easier on a work bench. And I would recommend that anybody else do the same.

I have a 2000 Altima. AC works fine, but only when it wants, which isn't often. Right before it DOES start working, there's a squealing noise. Sometimes it works right off the bat, other times it takes 20 minutes to kick in. Often it will kick in for 10 seconds, then nothing and repeat every minute or so like that until it's working. If I make a stop when it IS working, most likely it won't work when I start the car again. Also affects the defrost. Am I right thinking it's the serpentine belt?

+Temachok yes sir, I troubleshooted the AC pressure switch (it's good), the wire that sends power to the clutch (it has power) the wire that sends power to the AC pressure switch (has power) checked the fuses (all good) Only one thing to do, remove the clutch and see if it magnetize when turned on, but I rather wait until the parts arrive (should arrive tomorrow) since I ordered one already anyway... Thanks again...

+Devin Ledesma 1st check your freon level if it is between 25-35 PSI, too high/low clutch will not engage.check underneath the compressor for obvious signs of leak. If no leaks, turn AC to HIGH, AC button ON, clutch should engage. U can press/depress the AC button, u can actually hear the AUDIBLE "click" of the clutch engaging, if no click, check AC button power supply. U can directly jump the clutch for power. Connect red/yellow wire with wire tap, AC button OFF, turn AC to high. Connect tapped wire to + clutch should engage, if not, u have to remove clutch. Get a good high end snap ring pliers, trust me it's worth it. Once clutch has been removed, turn AC button ON... ENGINE OFF, place a metal object to the flat metal side of clutch, if metal object sticks, clutch is good, if not, ac bad. If metal sticks u may have to check AC pressure switch, there's a vid for checking Ohm resistance here on utube. If AC pressure switch is good, u may have to replace compressor...

DIY-time No i looked it up. They are shims for the ac clutch. Your supposed to have a specific gap between the ac clutch plate and the pulley. Your suppose to use a feeler gauge to get the gap. Its to create the right amount of suction for the coil. Idk how yours is working if you didnt ise them lol

It still works fine til this day. I think not all clutches require shims.

If bolt has to be drilled or breaks off, assemble and tig weld a tack in place after washer check and works ok. Some thread lock won't hurt and tack to compressor shaft. Weld just keeps from slipping off spline , take no torque or force, worked for me. No way to retap and helicoil unless compressor removal, and at that point, replace new compressor. Nobody talks about a tig or mig the plate on, just don't use a regular torch the heat will warp plate and kill seal on compressor.

How to know if you A/C compresson is died or just a clutch?
@DIYtime
@DIYtime 8 жыл бұрын
You may need to has a mechanic to look at it if you don't have special tools. First you'll need to see if there is pressure in the system. If you have a leak and preassure is low, pressure switch sensor will cut off AC compressor. If preassure is good, test if electric signal is coming to clutch when AC is on. If you can get to compressor, check if the shaft is spinning freely. If not - compressor is bad. Sometimes when compressor locks up, it breaks the clutch as well.

I'm not surprized they messed up the bolt - it really impossible not to... I bet dealer would not even try to do it and say thay they can only replace the whole compressor alltogether. I damaged the bolt myself and had to cut the hole for the flat head screw driver (1:06 - 1:40) to unscrew it. I would say let them try again, what do you have to loose - if they can't do it, you'd have to replace the whole compressor anyway. Why not give it a try. Tell them to cut that hole for the big flat head.
