Sounds like all subarus. Those compressors are noisy. This one sounds like its potentially over oiled.

I had a mechanic install a new compressor and it only lasted 3 weeks took it to a different shop they found out i dont have a clutch somewhere in the way it came put 😯

When replacing with new comp, make sure to rotate the comp by hand, about a hundred turns or more, to properly circulate the oil inside the comp. An insufficiently prelubed comp will be damaged by the fast rotation of the pulleys.

Ahhh😭😭😭 if you stop like now you probably can get away with just an ac flush then re oil then recharge!! Oh my that is not good to hear… I saw sparks on the first so maybe you need a whole system replacement like evaporator, expansion valve, compressor, dryer, and condenser. I hope not man that is spendy!!! I’d maybe start with a system flush “that means use the ac solution for flushing” then put under vacuum over night (IF) no leaks. Then make sure you know which oil your system takes they’re all different! My DD16 Detroit Diesel takes pag oil. Either ND-8 or PAG 41 I think!! Either 41 or 46 I’d have to look at the can. But that oil system change can fix your problem without much cost if the damage has not increased since the noise started. Just trying to help :) good luck!

Try getting a ac clutch replace/install kit and space out the clutch from the compressor a little bit, from what I’ve learned people have done that when it comes to grinding noises

Usually a waste of time for what clutch and labor run. Complete unit replacement is more cost effective since most clutch ailments due to internal compressor friction and parts cost difference is negligible.

If you look closely, a piece of metal flies out on the first engagement. It seems as something is mechanically incorrect on the pulley, I believe it’s slipping in a way, could be a torque issue? That looks like a compressor someone just installed. Maybe it’s overfilled and it started working recently? I’d say take a good look at the compressor clutch mechanically, and then check that your refrigerant system’s pressure is no more than 35 psi

Some ac clutches will make this sound due to the copper washer between the clutch and the magnets is worn out. You can replace it or just remove it entirely.

Seems like the clutch is slipping. You can pop that plate off with a tool and take out a shim. Check the gap after, should be somewhere in the .3 - .6 gap between the clutch.

Not true ... The clutch plate wears and increases the gap ... When the gap is large enough (years of use) the mag won't pull in ... Some clutches can be adjusted for gap with. The compressor not needed to replace.

@@nathankulp8063 That is true. I myself just replaced the clutch in mine to fix the AC. I’m just saying that if you wish and have the extra funds, you can replace the whole thing since you’re already 1/3rd of the way there when getting to the compressor. I just replaced the magnetic coil in mine ($35 part) instead of doing the whole compressor which can range between $300-$500

Your compressor probably needs to be vacuumed and check the seals for leak and oiled aswell as re gas

Check, if there are iron flakes in the AC. If yes, the System has to be flushed veeeery carefully. Any flakes will destroy a new compressor very fast

Probably didn’t instal no pag oil in the new ac compressor. Sometimes those ac compressor come pre oiled from the manufacturer but sometimes it isn’t necessarily to the specs of your vehicle.

Looks like they have the engine engine revved up pretty high when it happens. That’s why I keep my AC compressor turned off when I called start my vehicle. Then when it idles down, I will turn the compressor on.

I've seen worse on a Chevy Sonic. The sound was actually close to a rod knock. We installed a Delco a/c compressor pulled a vacuum it held solid at 28" below mercury and charged it with the proper amount of refrigerant and now it work's. The engine in this video looks like a Subaru.

@@hemnyadid you change the condencer also? If not, most of the time when the compressor locks it shoots metal bits to the condencer, making the compressor to fail again.
