I think he was showing that replacing both components is the solution. Usually, people just replace the resistor and then they have to keep replacing it over & over again. But frequently, unless you also replace the fan itself, the resistor will eventually blow again. People don't realize their fan is bad but if its not performing in an optimal way it could be messing with the circuit. Hope this helps. -Merv Himself

The kid in this video bought a resistor at one of the auto parts store sounds like to me. I also did that for the car that I fixed and it comes with a lifetime parts replacement warranty. But as other people have pointed out, you can't really call that a permanent fix. So I think the point this kid had was to not only replace the resistor, but also to pair it up with a brand new fan. Apparently that's what worked for him and it makes sense because even an old refurbished fan could be creating a drag on the system and causing that resistor to blow. so to technically do the job right: new resistor, new fan.

Yeah, I had this issue on my Nissan Altima, ordered the Blower Motor Resistor online and attempted to replace it myself. But after two unsuccessful attempts, not being able to get myself positioned well enough under that dang glove box, I gave in and took the part to Meineke and had them do the job. Worth every penny to me as it has gotten into the 90's here in Minnesota and I wasn't about to wait any longer. Like the guy said, you need to be a contortionist or whatever and well, I am in my 60's and not as trim as I used to be. LOL Thanks for the video though. Always want to DIY if I can.

If you replaced the motor and the resistor and it still keeps blowing, I'm not sure. However, I have heard on some cars that the generic replacements aren't as compatible with each other as the original equipment manufacturer parts which sadly cost an arm & a leg when you buy them from the stealership. Wish I had a better answer, but I hope this helps at least a little bit.

If your resister pack keeps blowing it’s because you are replacing your blower with a bad used Oem, a cheap advanced auto replacement with an inconsistent or high amp draw or the wiring between the switch, blower and resister is compromised. Measure the amp draw of your blower and check specs and that is a good indicator of it’s the blower itself.

That's what happened to another car I personally worked on. The only thing I can figure is that the old blower fan had a little bit of a drag to it. Just enough so it was overtaxing things. Anyway, when we finally replaced the blower fan with a new one, the resistor stopped blowing. Also ... another possiblity is that those resistors ain't all they're cracked up to be. Maybe it just took me several resistor replacements until I finally got a good one. O'reilly offers a replacement warranty and they actually honored it twice!

I'm not intimately familiar with that vehicle, but the basic principle is this: one of the multiple wires will have the highest resistance on it. This creates the lowest speed. Conversely, whichever wire has the lowest resistance, well that's the highest speed. Hope this makes sense. The best way I have seen to fix a scenario like yours is to make sure you get a brand new blower motor AND a brand new blower motor resistor. Sometimes when they aren't paired up perfectly, they still fry out.

People think this is bad, look at the BS you have to do with a 2012 Ford Focus. Thing was designed to cause pain and suffering from what I can tell. PoS parts and terrible servicing designs to top it off. Head unit doesn't seem so bad but apparently they are a problem part and aren't cheap so you're better off replacing it with aftermarket but you don't want to bother unless you upgrade so that ends up not being cheap either so you just go without a radio til you muster up the cash to waste on a simple creature comfort.

@@MervsServiceSecrets Thank you for the reply. I changed the blower motor and now it's working fine on all speed settings. I found a video a factory mechanic did where he explains why resistors keep burning out. I got lucky and did not burn out the new resistor. The blower motor just finally gave up. The vehicle has 240K miles on it, so I guess that's a pretty long life span for the original blower.

@MervsServiceSecrets
@MervsServiceSecrets 3 жыл бұрын
Gutsy! But it seems to me at the very least, you would still need a switch to break the circuit when not in use, otherwise you'll just drain your battery because the thing will be constantly running right? Depending on the specs of your vehicle, in THEORY, the fan should be spinning at highest speed when there is no resistance at all. So if your resistor is blown, your fan should be spinning with no speed control right now. If its totally dead, maybe it's the speed control switch that's bad. Worth thinking about anyway.
@MervsServiceSecrets

I think the point he was making is that you need to replace both. Not just the resistor, but also the blower itself, because the problem seems to stem from a mismatch or perhaps your old blower is working (or so you think) but creating just enough of an electrical drag on the system to screw things up.

@MervsServiceSecrets

Its that resistor that provides you with different speeds. When you turn the knob to go higher, the circuit goes through less resistance, until you basically get to no, (or very little) resistance and you have then reached HIGH SPEED. If you turn the knob lower, the circuit goes through MORE resistance which is what makes the fan turn slower. Hope this helps. -Merv Himself

The first one was from the dealer and it lasted a good bit longer than the auto parts store one but it didn't come with a lifetime warranty. I've found that it is having ac on high seems to be my problem. If I remember to turn it down halfway before i get out it never fails to turn on. I think leaving it on high is killing it. Same pin on the connector everytime. Resistor works fine it's the plug that goes on the blower motor. Water doesn't seem to be my problem. In the forums this is a problem and the only solution appears to be buy one with a lifetime and swap it out. I think next time I may remove the connector all together and just wire it right into the blower motor.

@@davidjamison847 either they bypassed the resistor all together like I did in my 2004 dodge ram 1500 just to get it to blow air until I get a new resistor in a couple hours. Or the wires are pulled out of the connector that connects to the resistor.

@@davidjamison847 also if wires are pulled out on the back of the climate controls that will do that. The absolute last thing I would check is the climate control unit itself. Hope this helps :)

So much for the misleading title and permanent🤐

The kid emailed me recently and said it's still going strong. That's about as permanent as it gets. You might have missed the point through. You are supposed to replace both the resistor AND the motor. Lots of people just do the resistor, not realizing the motor has issues and is causing it to blow. Hope this helps. - Merv Himself

so the permanent fix is to keep replacing the part every 3 months...okay

No sir. The kid is sayin' you need to replace BOTH parts. The blower as well as the resistor. A mismatch is a bad thing. But also, I have talked to some folks and certain makes & models seem to require factory replacement parts from the stealership in order to function reliably. Big bucks in those cases unfortunately. Thanks for the view though. Sure do hope you'll subscribe & share! -Merv Himself
