Why will this unit being replaced rather than have the leak repaired? A shame - nice quality with good service access, uses 410a so the phase out isn't an issue. Probably better than the stuff produced now without easy access to the compressor.
@johnmurphy63665 жыл бұрын
Jon [Insert Last Name Here] he said the house system is being replaced to accommodate zoned cooling,plus the unit is from 2002;its past its serviceable lifespan.
@Jon-hx7pe5 жыл бұрын
A 2002 condenser unit and evap coil are still serviceable in most cases because the parts are generic and cheap. It's just a question of how much money it makes sense to put into it to fix a leak. For a nice unit like that already 410a probably 12-13 seer, may be worth it. a cheapo leaking builder's r22 10 seer wouldn't be fixing at this age. Claiming not serviceable is just an excuse to sell something new in most cases. 10 to 15 year lifespan is bs, there are 20 to 30+ year old units out there running just fine. yah i heard the zoning part after writing the comment. hopefully the new one will be a 2-stage with the panel keeping second stage off until enough zones are calling.
@thehvachacker5 жыл бұрын
It has a evap coil leak and they don’t want to replace the coil. They want the 25 SEER XC25 modulating condenser and an i-harmony zoning system. The condenser here is worth keeping but the air handler is sagging toward the return. I was able to support it and stop more sagging but the installing company abused that air handler

I change run caps at 10 years because it’s a component that can degrade over time at high voltage, it a cheap $15 component and it avoid potentially severely damaging to the fan and compressor as rotor lock fries the crap out of them. Our little 9volt MFD test meter does not detect high voltage pock mark failures (called leakage at high voltage). Think about it, 50% of no a/c calls have failed caps. That means we should have changed the run cap long before. When they do fail bad, these bulging cap’s got that way at high voltage...right? If I were in a hot market (Sun belt) I would probably change these at 5 or so. Think of it as “failure prevention” since these units run far more. The biggest mistake I see is techs adding a booster start on top of an old run cap. Oops, The problem is, if that run cap has pock mark high voltage leakage shorting, that was the real problem to begin with. You don’t want an old degraded cap fighting with the new cap. Here is a secret. Change the run cap and listen to the compressor. Add booster cap only if it feels right to do so. Why do I say listen, because when I change out run caps preventatively, about a third of the compressors sound far more robust. So what might that mean... We could easily wager that a third of those run caps were degraded. Guess what, I pulled MFD readings on almost all run caps I replaced and way over 90% were within spec on my MFD meter. So our meter is a little skinny fat liar. Something like that... I also date my caps with a magic marker “7/2019 Prev-Mait” . I tag or write dates and notes on almost everything I replace. ULINE has blank white write on “service tags” with a thin marker pvc tags for leaving notes on components for any future techs and myself. I do change the metal lanyard on these tags to string in electrical component areas so it won’t short out anything flapping in the wind or gusts. I realize techs are trained to just test caps. But given the facts, it’s not enough. Age is the other factor. I studied caps, that caused me to pay more attention over the years to audible sounds and prevention.

Might have missed it, but what was the motivation to go with the Joblink system over a tradtional digital manifold set? Inquiry minds what to know.... thanks, keep up the good work.
@thehvachacker5 жыл бұрын
I wanted smart probes for awhile, was considering the testo yet most on my Facebook page talked up the joblinks. I’m a word of mouth kind of business so when buying new tools I figure I should go with same approach. Yet I was doing a start up on a couple 30 ton RTU’s and my Testo 550 after 7or 8 years suffered a static shock and won’t read subcooling anymore. The next day I was running calls for the emergency service so I decided to go to johnstone and buy them. Since using them I can never go back to a manifold except to recover or pressure test. It’s so much easier to switch refrigerant circuits on maintenances, no hose = no lose of refrigerant.
@jdamx_00004 жыл бұрын
did you find the leak on this unit? kinda sucks to add more refrigerant every two years, low load means more problem in the future and costs a lot for the client in the long run, but i get it, its a 2002 unit so eventually you'll have to change it anyway. nice video even tho it sucks to have night calls

This system was scheduled to be replaced in a few weeks. I think I left that in the video the customer saying when my company was replacing the system. This was around july 4th last summer with most days averaging close to 100 degrees. I was getting home overnight that week around 1-2 am being the unlucky one being on call.
@dalejustice92075 жыл бұрын
My hvac has been crazy all summer. First the capacitor went out, then it wouldn't get cold after that, called a hvac tech n I had the r22 in it. So he just puts a pound or 2 of 407b only mixes it and says it wont harm it. Charged me 105 bucks, never did get cold or cool. A guy came out completely drained it vacuumed all the stuff out until it was completely dry. Filled it with 407b n added the poe oil filled up, still wouldn't get cool or cold but wasn't freezing up like before, just wasn't cool, just like warm. He noticed that some one had wired the emergency heat to come on when the air conditioner was on, so he just unplugged the emergency heat from it. A week ltr it started freezing just like it did bf when it wouldn't get cool or cold and almost all my Freon he put in it was just about gone, so he filled it back up n said I will be back tomorrow to find n fix the leak, well he never came back n it never froze again or anything n was good about 2 weeks. All of a sudden it was on running n I hear it stopped n I checked n the condenser fan stopped running. I could hear the condenser running so I pulled the outside fuse n I wanted about 10-20 mins plugged it back up n it started working like normal. Long story short this whole week it may run 15 min to 5 hrs n the condenser fan will quit again n will not turn back on spinning till I take the top off n spin the blades n barley peck on the motor n when I put the fuse in, it kicks right on n may run 15 mins to 2 days before it does this again. I know the unit is about 20 yrs old n needs replaced, but I don't have the money to replace it. Do you think it is the motor going out of it for the fan? The capacitor seems to be fine. Do these fan motors have brushes in them? I have searched every where on google n for sure have not found any thing on these. I thought about just taking it off n taking it apart to see, but before I do I wanted to see if some one knew if they could be re built or not. Thanks
@thehvachacker5 жыл бұрын
Usually the motors just get tossed. yet instead of brushes you have a rotor and a stator. with 2 parts of the coil energized from the 120 and a capacitor changing the phase or creating the phase to create the magnetic force to make the rotor spin

It is not a good meter for heating. I got it at a garage sale for a few bucks. For ac it works but doesn’t do flame current micro amps so for HVAC it’s not the best. @throttlebottle59065 жыл бұрын
nearly all of them are "protected" meaning fusible links inside, upon bad short or issue they'll fail open circuit and generally should never explode. now if gets heated quickly by fire or torch it could blow the top, but they also have either stress relief lines to burst apart at or a rubber/solder covered hole to vent out of. BUT anything is possible, if it's smoking hot with boiling, ticking and snapping sounds, stay away :)

@thehvachacker5 жыл бұрын
It's called a turbo cause it is a life saver to those whose ac has a defective capacitor. You can make this replace most capacitors. For a service truck this is all that needed. These are built better and stronger than a standard dual cap and also come with a 5 year warranty
