You're a good and honest man who cares about the elderly .

I had a family friend who had an old R22 system (about 10 years ago) and a local AC company told them the system was toast and it had to be replaced and gave them a outrageous quote for a new system. It was a female friend's elderly father who didn't have the money for a new system, so I went to take a look at it. Replaced the condenser fan motor, both capacitors and the contactor.Cleaned the condenser coil (which was in surprisingly good shape for being in Florida). Unit ran great for a few days and the evaporator froze solid. Clogged with dog hair. Packed the unit, removed the evap coil and cleaned it. Pulled the evap fan and cleaned it too. Then I noticed the evaporator metering device (piston) was the wrong size for the condenser. Got the right size, reassembled everything, new evap fan capacitor and vacuumed the lineset. Unit ran great for another couple of days and stopped cooling. Went back and the damn service valves (not the Schrader ports, but the King valves themselves) were leaking. Was going to just braze the lineset directly to the condenser but was actually able to replace the o-rings in the valves. Installed new Schrader cores, vacuumed and recharged the system. Unit ran great for another 3-4 years until the father died. The daughter sold the house and the new owners used the system for another 2 years until they got the money to replace it with a new unit. The condenser (packed with the R22) and the air handler are now sitting in my storage unit waiting for me to do something with it.

West Columbia SC That's close to home. Older folks sometimes have a hard time but we will get there one day hopefully.

very nice! those lennox data sheets can be tricky sometimes. The first 5 digits of the serial number determine where it was made, and when it was manufactured. In this case the "1914E" 19 is the plant it was manufactured at, 14 is the year of manufacture, and E is the month of manufacture (May)

shrader valves leak a lot .. car tires too.. its not like the tire is punctured its the valve... maybe the bead .. I wonder for old people would it be good to have a portable AC you can give as a loaner.. I got one off the Amoozan Warehouse $85 in January no one was buying them Toshiba 10kbtu renewed.. its good for a bedroom but not a house. easy to setup just a hose out the window.

Yes, too new to be a leaker so poor install. Typical. Those 2 ton units truly are something...I think I could justify two of them in a 4 ton application since they are much more efficient on power than one big unit. Yes, more money up front but better comfort inside and in many cases, only one unit is needed during the day or night. Better for the long run in comfort and power consumption especially for those areas that charge too much for electricity...When power was 2 or 3 cents a kWh, we didn't have these problems to solve but today with 43 cents per kWh, power use is a big deal when you get a $700 electric bill...$25 a day !

Wow $0.43/kwh I dont want your power bill! I am at $0.10/kwh.
@Garth20112 ай бұрын
@@Jon.Rushing Yes, I believe you. In Nevada, the power rates are 6 cents for tier 1 and 8 cents for tier 2. A friend of mine in NV uses much power due to the hot weather in summer and heating is via heat pump so his HVAC system is running all year long with modest power bills of maybe $120 but he consumes about 2,500 kWh compared to my 1,450 kWh and a $600+ bill. Its all politics in California so part of our rates have hidden agenda that the state makes the utilities collect from us. Its all bull and the money that doesn't go toward actual power should be "Itemized" as to what the state is forcing people to fund. People in Government are out of control...they are supposed to be working for us, not for their personal adolescent views.
