Really enjoyed your build of this beautiful plane. Very impressed with how you managed to tame the intake flame decal given the compound curves and a flat decal. I have this set of decals, and that particular decal has kept it in the box for me. Yours appears painted on. Beautiful build!
@HammerheadModelMaking2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I would be lying if I said that decal didn’t give me any trouble. I kind of gloss over it in the video, but I ran into some bad wrinkles with that decal that I couldn’t smooth out with decal solution. I ended up needing to sand the wrinkles smooth, then mix up some custom yellow paint to touch up the sanded areas. I admit there were a few times I was ready to give up, but I had a lot of encouragement from the IG community and pulled through! It was worth it in the end.

Great video, love this one. It seems that the yellow intake decals are a bit darker than the yellow you used on the rest of the aircraft. Other than that it really looks amazing, thanks for sharing!

Wow beautiful build of this classic gunfighter! Such colorful markings I bet that nose art decal wasn't an easy one to apply! Love all the extra details you put into it as well. 👍 I built this kit probably close to 10 years ago and it was an enjoyable build. Unfortunately my cat accidentally knocked it off the table and it suffered some damage. I still haven't tried to put it back together yet but I have at least two or three more of these in the stash waiting to be built with aftermarket decals

Thank you! I'll admit, it wasn't as easy at it looked in the video, my trusty Solvaset was able to mostly get it conformed, but there were a few stubborn wrinkles that I ended up sanding down and touching up with yellow paint.

Lovely build, BUUUT... PUR dust IS lethal (think mesothelioma); a mask/respirator is NFG because all that dust remains in the environment ready for you to inhale later. ALWAYS work wet: use plenty of water whilst de-blocking, sawing or sanding, that way instead of dust you have a sludge which stays in one place and can be cleaned up & flushed at the end. I have access to a sink I can work in which is the best way out; always make sure you wash any residue off your hands as well -your family & pets are worth it if you're not! ;). End of Public Service announcement. :P

How do you mix all your paints and if you’re like me and only have one air brush, how do you do it without having to get up every ten mins?
@HammerheadModelMaking2 жыл бұрын
I generally try not mix custom colors, I will often just use a paint straight from the pot, the only times I do any mixing will be to add a little black or white to the base color for some modulation, and I do that right in the airbrush. I assume you mean by getting up every 10 minutes its to clean your airbrush. I keep cleaning supplies at my work station. If I'm switching colors often in an airbrush session, I will generally run some thinner through the airbrush first, then follow up with water before switching to the next color, I have a small box that I use to capture all the overspray from the cleaning so that it's not going all over the place. Also, I generally use acrylic paints so I don't need strong chemicals for cleaning, usually some Isopropyl alcohol is strong enough.

You are correct, nice catch. This kit is the only modern kit of the F-8 in this scale and I wasn't really prepared to back date it to an earlier airframe in addition to the other modifications I made to the kit, but perhaps one day I'll revisit it to make it more accurate.

Hallo dear. I dislike this video because the model is the WRONG version. The VF-84 NEVER used the E model (Academy Model) . The Bu. No. of the decals was a F-8C 145562 , conversion in a second time in K . please for the next time more research of history. Ok, this is a hobby but, never forget the right stuff
@HammerheadModelMaking2 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for your feedback. You are 100 % correct that I modeled the incorrect version of the F-8 for this project. But it wasn't for a lack of research. I just wasn't prepared to make the changes necessary to backdate the Academy Kit. And as a modeler I've never been super concerned with getting every aspect of a project absolutely correct. On top of that 1:72 scale is still relatively new to me, and I'm not fully confident in my scratch building skills, but should I repeat this livery, perhaps in 1:48 scale (the flames are super cool) I may try to represent the aircraft more accurately. Thank you for watching regardless and providing feedback, that is what helps me to improve. Cheers! Brett
@girolamolorusso2 жыл бұрын
my criticisms only go in one direction. Improve and improve. I have been doing modeling for over thirty years and historical research is very important. i am sure in the future you will do better. Don't worry I've seen worse things ...
