In this installment of 3D models for NCPTT's Documentation of Slave Cabin and Tenant Farming Houses Project, we visited the Slave Quarters at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Originally a convent and a school for girls, the Academy of the Sacred Heart was founded in 1821 by The Religious of the Sacred Heart in France. According to the school records, the first record purchase of a slave, Frank Hawkins, for the school happened in 1823 and by the 1860s there were a record of 30-40 slaves at the school. Slaves were either given or donated to the school as a way to offset cost of the intuition during and after the civil war when attendance was low. In 1834 the school decided to build this quarter to house three families of the enslaved. The original quarters on the left-hand side once had a chimney and is noted in the records of purchases for the enslave families. A laundry and additional quarters were added later. After he emancipation of slavery in 1865 the quarters were divided up for different usage. The front rooms closer to the school became a guest house, the laundry continued to be operated and the room closer to the fields were used to house the ground keepers.
NCPTT laser scanned this building using the Leica Geosystems RTC360 Laser Scanner to produce this video 3D flythrough model of the building's digital point cloud.
