Straight and to the point content, unlike 99% of other beekeeping channels out there. It is also fascinating to see the commercial approach to hive management, which I think the rest of us small-scale guys can learn a lot from. Thank you!

Dang, although it's late it's too bad you didn't have some queen cells or virgin queens to pop in those queenless colonies. There could be just enough time to get the job done if fall is kind. If successful, those late queens could be your best spring colonies, partially due to that cleansing brood break. (I realize on your scale you don't have time to fiddle fart around with the few needy colonies. I just can't help but think of the possibilities )

Interesting you are feeding colony's that have brood and not the ones without brood. Corn syrup is not considered a good supplement on the other hand sucrose at the rate of 1 to 1.5 of water will promote brood production with pollen patties.

I bought a half pallet of 50# bags of brewers yeast from Mann Lake a few years ago and kept in my walk in freezer. Dang glad I did, you can't get it anywhere now. I only use a few bags a year, so still have a good supply for the future. I like my patty recipe and would hate to have to improvise, but you know they say necessity is the mother of invention, so perhaps you'll dig your new recipe even more than your old one. Good luck!

Question ? How is your drone population holding up. Since you were having late season swarming. Do you feel you have an adequate number of drones for successful mating this late in the season for you. I'm giving you a break today about getting stuck. Hey Ian, I've read that the lack of pollen is what sparks the building of winter bees. I'm seeing you add two lbs of pollen patties saying to start the winter nest so apparently what I'm reading is wrong? I plan to keep my 45 colonies in 1:1 until the golden rod flow which I'm expecting to be gangbusters here in another 2 weeks with so much rain we have had last 2 weeks. Do you think I should throw a lb of pollen on them too. There won't be much pollen out there for them in the wild until the golden rod as well. I want to build as a large winter cluster this year as I can

Off topic, but did you mean you spray your irrigation ditches in the Fall? I just had a drainage ditch dug out ($$) and I hadn't heard of spraying in the Fall, but certainly would if it helps. I'm actually in city limits so I don't tend to hear these things.

You can use spirulina to feed the bees a better cheap natural pollen protein that's actually really good for them and their gut health. As far as the 20.5% moisture content goes for your honey, you have a perfectly good building to dry those frames

I'm having issues with queen excluders, two of my seven the bees use very well and the others not many bees go through. I have swapped them and then the bees go through. I can tell that some of them are smaller. So where do you purchase yours and what should the gap be?

Bob Binnie had a video that said that a while ago he had a batch of queen excluders where the gaps were too small - he went back to the supplier and they have since corrected the problem. I seem to recall the supplier was Mann Lake.
