I've really been struggling with my faith, and knowing God is real lately. Just hearing this brings tears of both joy and sorrow to my eyes: joy in all the truth of this song that I know to be true, but also sorrow in that despite all He's done for me, I still doubt Him. There was a famous Australian who sued the church for an “act of God”, because the insurance company refused to pay. There was also a 2001 Australian movie, “The man who sued God”, staring Billy Connolly, based on this idea. In the movie his boat was hit by lightning which the insurer called an Act of God and refused to pay. Basically he argued that since the Church claimed to be God’s representative, they had to take responsibility for God’s actions. The only way out legally for the church from paying the claim was for them to argue that they did not represent God, that they weren’t God’s representatives. They were, naturally, very reluctant to argue that, so they were trapped. Most countries have now passed laws banning Act of God clauses in insurance policies.
