Thanks for sharing, and for participating as a disabled person! It's cool that they're doing this sort of thing and it's definitely important that they get the perspectives of people with disabilities. Thanks for being an ambassador! Also, your hair is amazing.

Angles were totally fine and I just really enjoy seeing and hearing you again, so I'm about the vlog-style and whatever other kinds of content you're interested in making. :] And just to echo everyone else: your hair is AMAZING! And, yeah, ew. I feel like non-disabled folks are not only super uncomfortable w disabled people because of societal ableism and ignorance and misconceptions around the idea of being "PC" (ugh and cringe), but also because they're told through the educational institution and a lot of academic text that they've gotta do all these things to be respectful (often things that aren't preferred by disabled folks, like using person-first language, but pushed by non-disabled family/providers/etc). But these students haven't got a real foundation (esp at engineering students) for all of this and understanding ableism and micro-aggressions etc., so the exposure to these concepts often actually makes them feel and act more awkward and less respectfully because they're nervous about us and the situation as a whole. At least this is a lot of the experience I've had as a disabled person taking classes focused on or mentioning disability with most non-disabled classmates. People are so clueless and just won't listen to disabled folks to become less so...

I wanted to be a mechatronical engineer to create mobility aids for disabled people like me. Since my hand is damaged I ended up in materials engineering, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to do that :( maybe with a masters degree. Biomedical engineering is amazing :)

Your Hair Is AMAZING! Engineers are constantly deconstruction and reconstructing things in their head, even people. It could also be they are not use to seeing someone as hot as you are and with such pretty hair.

Disabled 20-something female manufacturing engineer who _used to_ have a career in the USA's medical device industry here... and I will tell you that it's _NOT just_ the engineers who seem to have a gigantic fear of the words "disabled" and "disability" -- which is a huge irony when someone's job _every single day_ is to _LITERALLY_ help design and/or manufacture products that help people who have a medical condition that almost always meets the USA's ADA definition of "disability". As for me, hiding behind a quasi-anonymous username DOES allow me to speak a little bit more freely. My disability WAS the reason that my career lasted only four years AND is the reason that I am now too sick to work. Yes, both of my former employers created barriers -- rather than working with me to remove them -- something that is very likely ILLEGAL for one, if not both of the employers, based on the facts of my specific situations. Oh, and did I mention that I was self-taught (via lots of reading and Internet research) / learn-as-I-went AND had no mentor in my very highly specialized, very high risk sub-discipline of engineering -- meaning that the products had the potential to be very dangerous to patients IF the product design had a design flaw and/or something went wrong during the manufacturing process -- AND that I had (somehow) managed to earn respect of being referred to as a "Subject Matter Expert" (SME) at age 25? Yes, I did have my undergraduate engineering degree from university as a foundation, but this knowledge / skill / expertise was way above and beyond that. But no... I sound like a fantastic person to demonize as 'the other'... =(

"physically challenged" oh my GOD i'm cringing. it's definitely an able bodied thing that i've noticed when using my mobility aid. people just tiptoe around your disability as if you're a ticking time bomb?? i don't get it?? especially when in that situation where they're working on a project FOR disabled people?? we aren't a vulgar word. but this was so cool, so many amazing projects that i don't have the science-y brain to understand but love nonetheless. also your new hair is INCREDIBLE xx

I understand very well why people tiptoe around disabilities when I see some reactions of some people. I am a Biomedical Engineer with a chronic disease, but I still don't know well how to address others with disabilities, because I have had people reacting very badly. The last thing I want to do is make them feel even worse, so I try to be as careful as possible with my words. How would you recommend going about it when meeting someone with a dissability for the first time?
@agirlisariot
@agirlisariot 7 жыл бұрын
just treat us like anyone else you meet for the first time, we're people too. we don't want to be treated differently, or looked down on as if we're children. we don't want pity. don't talk to our wheelchair/mobility aid or the person pushing our chair. don't squat down to talk to us. we're still people. that's all it comes down to.
