As an African, one that comes from a modern family I feel the need to educate people on the Matilda situation. Miles is on the wrong here and it’s a clear example of what happens when u don’t educate yourself about your partners culture! An engagement is a big deal in Africa no matter what tribe u come from, u just don’t go propose to someone for the sake of proposing here ! Most people marry within a year after getting engaged! Jessica you are right. I’m Ghanaian, married to an American. And an Akan just like Matilda but from the Nzema tribe so the culture is very similar. We don’t wait a whole year to do an engagement. The engagement is the traditional wedding. If you’re not ready to get married don’t even bring it up to her because then you will be leading her on for no reason. My husband did the knocking and was given the list for the bride price and a date. When you go for the knocking, and you are accepted, the family gives you the date to bring the items on the list and that’s the day for the traditional wedding. Mine happened two weeks after the knocking ceremony. She’s not wrong to feel upset.

No disrespect but you wouldn’t be saying what you’re saying about Niles if you knew more about autism and what its characteristics were and what is considered normal and not normal with those whom have it. It’s not using excuses, it’s having an understanding about the disability, which it is one, and giving grace and having an understanding and some compassion about it. It’s not excusing the person but knowing where they’re coming from and why their behavior and their actions are what they are. Niles is actually a very high functioning person with autism. However, those who have the disability express their emotions or lack there of, in a different way than those who do not. He is displaying the typical characteristics and symptoms of one with it. They are usually unaware of what others are experiencing and their effects on them as they don’t have the capacity to feel like we feel, or express themselves in what we consider typical ways. That’s exactly what autism is and does. They don’t understand or have the capacity to express themselves in a manner which is what we would consider acceptable. Are you going to claim that a person with a physical disability and is in a wheelchair to still be able to walk or not let them take an elevator for their disability they have? No, we wouldn’t expect that bc we know it’s not possible and the same goes for those with certain mental disabilities, challenges, and illnesses. Just like a person who should have knowledge about and not be ignorant to this shouldn’t be making assumptions and judge others based upon their disability or not understanding first what the topic is they are commenting about. It shows lack of empathy, consideration, knowledge and respect to those who are different than you. Whatever it is that you think is the correct and matter of fact way for someone like Niles to be like, or how his reactions and emotions should be, you’re completely wrong about this and you should be able to make it a point to actually be able to understand and learn about this particular person and anyone else who is different than what you consider normal or expect when you clearly are ignorant to it. And I don’t blame you in the fact that you obviously didn’t have the opportunity or maybe chose not to be more aware and empathetic and having a clear understanding about people that are different than you or what your expectations are of others when you don’t even know them or what or why their actions, feelings, etc are as they show or appear. And I didn’t want to make this a long sounding lecture but please at least try to understand where I’m coming from and why and how passionate I am about this due to my background. Not only did I go to Graduate school for this, but I’ve also experienced it for myself as I have ADHD, anxiety, and many health issues that can be considered to be disabilities as well. Hence, my knowledge (as these are not my opinions but are facts) of this subject matter is not just from schooling and education but also real life. Like I said, no offense and no disrespect. Just trying to be clear and honest and an advocate and teacher for these individuals, though what I mentioned above, should also be applied to all human beings. Remember, we are not talking about some criminal or anything like that. These are real human beings who have the same rights and freedoms as the rest of us. Every human being deserves to not be judged especially due to ignorance of others or their own expectations. Most people who are ignorant to this and still assume someone is bad or whatever when they don’t know them and assume things or expect them to be like you. One needs to have knowledge about what they’re commenting about, as well as have some compassion, empathy, and understanding what and why his reactions and feelings and emotions may come off as unacceptable. But his brain is completely different than most of us. Those with autism lack what I mentioned above nor do they know how to express themselves in an always appropriate manner and seem to lack empathy for others and understanding of all this. But that’s why it’s a disability. It's not just a nuclear family. In Africa, aunties and uncles are involved and they are a crucial part of the nockdoor ceremony. For context, my grandfather had 24 children, some of those children had upto 10 children. I'm not sure how big Maltida's family is, but it's quite easy to have a room of 90 people who are all family. $300 really is nothing. I feel so bad for Sunny, he needs someone more mature and grown up. Veah needs to go figure out her life and become an adult before marrying anyone. Bozo is dumb. Vanja needs to just go home or see what's up with his friends. She shouldn't have left the table when he broke up with her, just turned and said "As a single woman, would any of you gentlemen be interested in acquiring my number before I take my exit?" 😏 Loren is disgusting and forcing someone, just anyone to help him find a way for him to get citizenship there. Magda is just using Joe. So many red flags.. Seems like she wants to get married and have kids, move to USA, get citizenship, then divorce and get half of everything and child support and be in America all she wants. She needs to just enjoy it and let the relationship flow naturally, she making a damn schedule to be in America and be married to him before 2024 ends or something before even making love to the man.. Geez. Omg! Niles and Matilda! Niles knew how important family was in the whole engagement process, both his family and hers, he was supposed to bring his whole family to meet her whole family in the first place to ask her to be his wife and she did tell him that! Now he's disgracing her to her whole town cuz he thinks she's "forcing" him to pay whatever she says he has to. He did not even ask Matilda "Hey, I can do like $100-$150 whatever, and can we maybe cut back on guests? Your uncle's friends don't really need to attend." Instead he went and talked bad on her to a respected member of her community!!! How horrible!! When she clearly states she has never asked for a dime from him before and isn't with him for his money.. So frustrating.. He's comfortable talking to Mr. Arc about his concerns about that big of a knocking ceremony but not his own fiancé first? Grrrr! Niles knew not to talk down on Matilda and make her family or her look like that... I do not think Matilda has ill intentions, she's just happy and excited and wants the big wedding and engagement and everything that every girl dreams of and got carried away. He should have just talked to her first about his concerns, she would have understood. Not like how Magda is using Joe.. or how Brian just wants a caregiver he can bang..
