I love how Angela is an OG on KZbin. She was one of the first people I was following on Tumblr, when she was an actual child in her bedroom sewing some awesome shit that she just kind of made up as she went. Her resourcefulness and patience stood out to me, and I didn’t really get into following anyone in historical costume on KZbin until way later, where I was delighted to recognize her and realize she was so successful in the community!

When I started sewing I thought drafting seemed terribly intimidating while draping looked intuitive. But once I tried them I found drafting felt like a magical spell to make flat things have shape, while draping was more like slippy slidey guess work. Also, bodice and pant blocks just seemed like the way to go for me. I highly recommend it to anyone with nonstandard proportions.

To be clear, there is no such thing as "the right body" for a historical period. That's what the support garments are there for. And I think Morgan looks amazing in every period that she's tried. This was very interesting to see your process and the resulting gown is wonderful. With respect to you both, for me personally, Angela's draping is beyond amazing. Something about her approach creates a very flattering, sumptuous shape and brings out the beauty of the fabrics. She would have been in BIG demand during this time period. I hope she has an equally gifted friend to drape her gowns. Side story .. my mother always told me to choose the hair stylist with the worst hair cut in a salon because they were the gifted ones cutting everyone else's hair. Of course, I expect ALL the ball gowns at the grand event will be works of art and look forward to seeing videos and stills.

I love both draping and drafting equally! For me they serve very different purposes. But draping tends to be a lot faster and you have a lot more control so it’s good for things with seams that need to flatter. But drafting is great for skirts and pants.

first impression when you first tried the mockups: the drafted one looked more "right" in a way, like it looks like how an article of clothing "should" look (emphasis on the quotation marks) but the draped on looked like it was a part of you, it kinda looks like those touched up photos. I guess the drafted bodice looks more like tailor's work and the draped looks more haute couture (i think it's because it their respective trades prefered method) edit: i think my most imediate thought was the draped version has it's "soul" already it has that little je-ne-sais-quoi that pulls me into a project that i can't put into words and other people don't really see

Morgan, I have watched this video several times and must say this is one of, if not THE best, most beautiful dresses I have ever seen. The ivory with the beaded overlay is breathtaking. I do beadwork & was very glad you went with the plyers to crunch the excess. I use light weight fire line or regular beading thread, depending on the project, so not cutting the thread with bead crunching can be tricky. I would definitely save a few scraps to cut replacements beads from though. It's so pretty on the garment! Absolutely love the blouses & the bicycle sweater! Your dress turned out fantastic in the end.

draping definitely wins for me! in my experience, I feel like most victorian ball gowns are more manageable when you work from a 3D form as opposed to flat - maybe tailored garments are the exception. there's just so many curves and it's so fitted that it really seems to work out better with draping

Personally, I am a very chaotic sewer. I use just about every single method out there in all of my projects- draping, drafting,using pattern websites and using past patterns. I somehow always manage to make the garment perfectly even though I have no mannequin, no mock-ups, a hate for anything maths and only one year of experience in sewing myself clothes. I like to think I’m just very lucky.

The best way to break beads is to insert a push pin into the hole and press against a rubbery surface (ie an eraser). This guards against cutting the thread used to sew to the base fabric. As a beaded, using pliers was the first method we used, and the push pin/eraser method evolved for tightly woven beads. By far superior results. Info for next time!

The deep crimson velvet is very striking against the cream! A tip for anyone working with beaded fabric: smashing the beads can damage the thread that holds them on, so if you're paranoid like me, stitch through the beads for an inch or so right next to the denuded sections to make sure the original thread stays put.

I love flat pattern drafting in general. I know how to drape and if I don't want a pattern and I'm in a hurry, I have draped using my fashion fabric especially for modern garments or underpinnings. I found that when I draft using a manual that uses a ruler I need to adjust the back length because my back is so short.

I’m not sure you should apologize for not understanding Victorian tailoring! Goodness! That dress would cost a bundle today! Especially with all the finishing you did in the seams! My MOther bought a dress in Paris as a splurge in 1976 when she visited Paris after almost 40 years. It cost her over $4000.00 CDN equivalvent While we were still on the Gold Standard! Probably close to $10-15K today! And it was so dificult to get her into it. It was gorgeous, but so fussy to don! Your “creation” could be worn today at any beautiful ceremonial Ball with pride and pleasure ! Kudos Morgan !
