The strawberry string goes around one or two fingers to secure the tomato pin cushion sitting on the back of your hand to keep it to hand while pining fabric and keeping the palm of the hand free for pinning. My mother, aunts and grandmother taught me that when I was little and were sewing and quilting. That info may have been lost with time. I was a young child in the 60's

My mum is a quilter, I am a crafter. She made us like tabbard style aprons. Mine is covered in paint and glue. Mum's is covered in pockets and straps, little bits of elastic to hold spools of threads, a few magnets for pins etc. then we wear them to craft fayres

Giant things and tiny things are the best! Hazariel Atelier has a video where she makes some giant sewing supplies including spools of thread out of 2 big round tins joined together so you can open each end. I think she also made a giant pair of scissors that move!!

To hold the tools in place, may I recommend glueing a strong magnet to the backside of the props, and then placing a corresponding magnet on the backside of the apron. That way you can easily take the tools out, without damaging the apron, and still wear the apron alone, if you choose. You could even make other props to fit in the pockets, and swap things in and out as you want, whenever you want.

I too love an apron. Recently a friend came over to mass make peirogi and I held out a handful of aprons and asked, "Which one would you like?" She was taken aback, picked on and put it on and exclaimed, "this is the first time I've ever worn an apron." Whaaaaaa? I have cooking, sewing and construction aprons (including a plastic tiling saw apron cause it spits water). And then the holiday themed aprons... so many aprons!

I love how the orange scissors are iconic internationally. The orange colour was a coincidence. It was what the manufacturer happened to have in the machine when the prototypes were made.

here's a little information about those orange-handled scissors The world's first plastic-handled scissors were born in Finland, in the village of Fiskars, in 1967. The scissors in question completely revolutionized the perception of household scissors. In 1972, Fiskars was the first company to start mass production of left-handed ergonomic scissors. Left-handed scissors can be identified by their red color. In 1975, beveled blades were introduced and the cutting angle of the blades was optimized to be more efficient and durable. In 1980, the plastic of the handles became resistant to dishwashers, autoclaves, UV light, shocks and stress. In 1994, a new production method was developed to minimize the number of subsequent repairs. The model was the old All-metal tailor's scissors, when Fiskars designer Olof Bäckström designed a new model in the early 1960s. Bäckström emphasized the ergonomics of the handles and chose plastic as the material, which was just entering households. The scissors had to become black, red or green. However, during the manufacturing phase, the machine user decided to use up the orange color in the plastic machine, which was already used in the juicer produced by the company. The random color was surprisingly appealing, and a vote was held between orange and black. The votes of the 16-person jury were exactly 9-7 in favor of the orange.

It's funny you call the pin sharpener on the tomato a strawberry, since I always called it a pepper. This is probably because I grew up in the southwest, so pico de gallo was always in my household - hence the connotation!

I was just reminded of something I wanted to make. I'm a substitute paraeducator and I was working in a preschool for two weeks, and normally I wear dresses with pockets but one day I wore jeans which did not have pockets! One of the other ladies let me borrow a little half-apron with about 6 pockets and I thought it was so, so clever for stashing tissues, bandaids, stickers, hand sanitizer, etc. Thinking about it, recess/lunchroom staff frequently wear these and I never realized how handy they are. Younger me probably thought they were silly but 30+ me is well willing to embrace practicality when it comes to runny-nosed children.

Sounds like a "nail pouch/carpenter's pouch." Super simple construction - basically 3 extra large pockets, and it ties around your waste. I used it for dog training ! Treats, clickers, tennis balls, everything fits ! When I bought it, it was under 5 bucks ? Easy to wash and durable!

I can walk a little, but can't stand up very long because of pain. So I use a wheel chair much of the time. I do all the dishes sitting in the wheelchair, which is a bit too low so I end up getting my shirt wet. I wear an apron all of the time while doing the dishes because it soaks up a lot of the water and my shirt doesn't get as wet that way/ I also sit while doing cooking prep. Because I have nerve damage in my hands I'm somewhat clumsy and messy. An apron really helps me keep my blouses cleaner. So yes, I wear aprons often, but like to take them off before I serve and eat dinner. I have several cute aprons. I usually use an apron for about a week before I have to throw it into the laundry.

@@presgutpela I know the phrase 'noli me tangere' from the Wyatt poem "Whoso list to hunt" written during the reign of henry the 8th. but that's a reference to Pliny the Elder, who lived ~23CE to 79CE. it also appears in the bible, when that gets translated from Greek to Latin, but i would argue the Pliny reference is older.

I've often wandered about Bernadette's scissors. I think the reason for the tartan ribbon might be twofold. 1) It is easier to find them 2) padding for using against fingers. Bernadette is very lean and does not have a lot of padding. (NOT a criticism.)

Back in the day - pins and needles weren't made of stainless steel - they rusted. The little strawberry was filled with emery; run the pin or needle several times through the strawberry and you "sanded" off the rust. Those tomato/strawberry pin cushions have been around for decades. I'm pushing 88 and I remember them from my childhood. Why the combination of a veggie and a fruit I have no idea.

I was thinking of a gardening apron but I already have gardening cargo pants that work just fine unless I'm jumping on a shovel (in which case my phone on one side and my knife on the other side bang around and bruise my knees cause the pockets are a bit low)... however, an apron for bee-related stuff when I'm not suited up has grabbed me by the brain and telling me it gets to jump the to do queue so that next week during our next hive cleaning session, I don't have propolis and wax on my clothes...

I was definitely expecting something more appliqué-like that would make the whole thing machine washable, but it looks like making the props was pretty fun! I feel like you could add some pockets to the pockets, though, to actually stash your scissors and measuring tape. I'm a beginner in my sewing journey. I'm currently in the process of making an apron for myself. It's the first wearables thing that I am making for myself that is not just me mending or resizing some clothes. I'm really hoping to make my own clothes because the fashion world does not cater to my size, my shape, or my tastes. It's really encouraging to watch you make an apron and show how it can be done. I don't like the fit of the neck loop on an apron for me and I'm making mine with shoulder straps. Look up one piece Japanese style aprons. The straps come out at a nice curve to the front and can either be permanently attached, or buttoned at the hips. I also recognize them as toddler dresses for over little bloomers.

Definitely agree--more aprons! You look SO stinking cute!! And that base pattern just fits you SO WELL. I had a pinafore dress growing up that I called my Alice dress that was very very similar, just smaller and blue rather than red. It was my favorite dress for ages and I was heartbroken when I outgrew it. I think you've inspired me to explore that again (just maybe with fewer ruffles than the first one had). The only place where I think I would have differed from the audience survey is on the scissors: the ones I automatically think of are the all metal variety, but with black or gold handles on a silver body. To be fair, that's because my great-grandmother and several generations back were all tailors, and the shears just sort of got passed down along the way,. So the ones I think of also tend to be massive, and sometimes with odd cants to the blades. The orange ones are pretty iconic in their own right, though! My grandmother once suggested that instead of a tomato, the pincushion was meant to be a pepper, and the strawberry was just a newer pepper that hadn't rounded out yet, like some of the varieties we had in the garden. I was very little so I went along with it and it just sort of stuck. So I've thought of them that way pretty much ever since.

Also, the strawberry or pepper, however you look at it is actually used to sharpen your pins. In that little strawberry there is little gritty things inside that sharpen your pins just thought I would share that.

There’s an artisan who makes handmade ties (XOElle), and one of her long sellers is the tapemeasure tie, which of course comes in yellow. She built a custom silk screen for hers. I also love aprons and saw an amazing style on Instagram with a long set of ties that allow it to be tied loose on the side or looped around the waist and tied in the back. Of course I had to make one! 😂

I have a collection of aprons. My favorite was a gift from my aunt and it’s is purple, with bearded irises on the trim. I wear it every time day. I have frilly vintage ones for making martinis, cow print ones for barbecuing, I have lots of kids aprons because being a mom is what I chose, I have ones for working in the garden. And lots of fun, pretty or for show aprons. They are all displayed on coat hooks in my kitchen. I love the idea of a sewing apron, a la Barbie style. I’m going to have to add one to the collection for my sewing room.

I feel like another tool/ sewing object is the blue cookie bin. It is a metal tin that typically have sugar cookies in it that EVERYONE associates with sewing stuff: extra needles, clothing scraps, measuring tapes, pins, etc. Etc. But it is always the blue cookie tin.

Every shop needs an assistant. My Beloved watches auto and bike crafting KZbinrs, and several have feline assistants, small kiddos, or both, involved in their crafting. So delightful to see some of those big machos have gentle moments with small creatures. I need more aprons in my life.

Absolutely cute. Cant get over this measuring tape. And all the possibilities to personalize it to the hobbyists craft. ❤ I do have some aprons of my mum and grandma. They have buttons and buttonholes too and are worn with crisscrossing back bands. But their buttons are sewn on the inside. This way the sometimes to long ends of the bands vanish to the inside of the apron.

I was just thinking earlier today that i really want to try learning to sew again, and this reminded me that somewhere in my crafting stuff I had started making myself an apron froman old oversized jeans. It was the criss cross back that reminded me since that was the only style I found tolerable. Happily inspired now.

The hat pins work for the ball top style of sewing needles but for diversity: knitting needles. Single point knitting needles look like the flat top pins, and the smaller needles WILL poke through many types of fabrics. You could use the metal needles, or plastic/wood painted to look like metal. Just a thought. Great video!

I can tell you why the tomato showed up in sewing! Pincushions have been around since the Middle Ages at least, but according to the Victorians, placing a tomato on the mantle of a new home brought good luck and prosperity. If tomatoes were out of season, they’d improvise with a bundle of red cloth stuffed with sawdust! And the crafty women of the period thought it was also an excellent place to store their pins!

The strawberry string goes around one or two fingers to secure the tomato pin cushion sitting on the back of your hand to keep it to hand while pining fabric and keeping the palm of the hand free for pinning. My mother, aunts and grandmother taught me that when I was little and they were sewing and quilting. That info may have been lost with time. I was a young child in the 60's

I love apron videos, and this one is so cool! I'm sewing a bunch of band patches on my dad's denim-ish kitchen apron, since he and I are both into heavy metal and thought it would look really cool if we made him a battle apron instead of a battle jacket or vest! After I finish, it will go back to hanging inside the pantry with my mom's rooster print apron. :)

I’ve always gardened with a nice canvas or duck or denim apron. The pockets hold a lot and the apron prevents soil from dropping down the front of your pants. It’s common in my home country, France

When I was teaching I actually had a teacher apron. it was a half apron I made from old jeans. I kept my dry erase markers, a remote for some technology, some candy, and had a pocket as a general catchall.I had people laugh and immediately guess I taught special education. I actually gave some to my secret snowflakes when I got them.

When I was a Head Start teacher for preschoolers I often wore aprons. I never knew when I might need a pocket for tissues, or pencils and crayons. the odd bit of playdough, a little toy car, Legos, etc.. Aprons also helped to keep stuff like finger paints, peanut butter, and boogers off of my clothes.

I actually learned this, recently… the strawberry on the tomato pincushion is an emory for cleaning and sharpening your needles and pins.
