it is kinda funny for me, seeing so many people say they hated her until what else can i do (and even after). i’m the eldest child in my family, so I empathised with her and immediately clocked the way she put on a mask to meet everyone’s expectations. The writers and directors did a really good job in subtly portraying that even before she revealed it. Honestly, both Luisa and Isabela were really relatable as older siblings, especially daughters.

I think the fact that when they hugged the candle grew stronger just showed the lack of relationship in their family was what was killing it, because when their house rebuilt they all had a stronger relationship, and Bruno was there considered a part of their family and their connection helped the candle to work. Mirabel and Isabela’s relationship wasn’t good because BOTH of them actually envied the other, believing that the other person had an easier life than their own. Isabela envied Mirabel’s “freedom” from crippling expectations while Mirabel envied that Isabela was Abuela’s favorite with the family’s high hopes placed on her. When they actually got to communicate properly with each other, they realized that neither had it easy. In the song, Mirabel encouraged Isabela to just do what makes her happy while Isabela showed Mirabel that she was thankful for that (giving her the acknowledgment that Mirabel had always sought after from the family).

But I quickly caught it on the second time. My brother is the GC to our mother. Isabella was never the problem. Alma is. She triangulated Isabella and Mirabel. Mirabel is the Scapegoat, especially because she also has no powers- just like Alma. And Alma only lets Isabella use her powers as Alma herself sees fit.
