What Country are you in? It does depend on how much you want to spend. But, the most expensive doesn't necessarily mean better quality. I find the Faithful brand 1000/300 grit are good value and flat.

What I would add is user skill with the scraper. Nice smooth pressure

Ahh. Yes thank you. I'll add that to my 'ultimate method' coming in a few weeks 👍

Great video, I feel scraper sharpening is such a nuanced thing, everything can make an impact on it's performance. But certainly the stone work before burnishing shouldn't be underestimated. Video idea: How about a video on "chip carving". The process (we saw so much of in the last font you made) of texturing and in different scales. As I'm sure that affects the methods.

Thanks Brian. Yes thats probably why new scrapers work amazingly well. Then after a while not so good. Protection. I'll get to it soon I think.

best quote? i"m not selling anything, I'm just showing you how I do it." Listen up folks, someone is sharing some wisdom. You should listen. They want you to be better NOW.! Give it a try, eh? Just saying, someone taught me, he is GIVING you knowledge.

Very interesting stuff. £45 makes me wince a bit but it looks to introduce a valuable repeatability. I think like a lot of tools that guide you, it's best used in tandem with developing the skills they replace. I suppose it occupies the same space as a honing guide... It's good and valuable to learn the skill of freehand sharpening - I'm not great at it but it's how I began to properly understand the behaviour of the angles we introduce to our edges. That said, as my skills are still developing, a honing guide allows me to have a consistent result every time and not allow any deficit of my freehand sharpening skill to get in the way of me being able to practice with a well tuned hand plane. I guess I'm trying to say things like this help one skill deficit not become a barrier to developing another one. Typically, you'd not get to practice with a decent card scraper until you nailed burnishing (unless someone else did it for you), this allows you to almost develop craft skills in any order and at your leisure which would normally have to be developed in sequence. That said, developing in sequence can be the best and most foundational way to do it. I feel confident with a hand plane because I spent a good six months really getting my sharpening down and repeatedly tearing down and rebuilding them first. Leapfrogging can mean you end up with holes in your understanding that you'd not have with a more linear, gradual and incremental learning approach. I'm not great at freehand sharpening but a honing guide means that doesn't stop me from developing my skills with using a plane. So here my weakness with turning an edge on a card scraper won't get in the way of me developing my skill at using a card scraper. I think so long as these things are used in CONJUNCTION with developing the skills rather than REPLACING them, then they make us better in the long term by showing us how an end product should look and behave if we were to absolutely nail it. I'm rambling now. I'm going to go and practice my freehand (sounds like a euphemism). Great vid mate as per!

Thank you James. Any questions, we can go through on Wednesday evening. Jamie

We called it "ticketing" rather than "ticking" because it sounds like a train ticket punch! Do you think that accu-burr might make curved scrapers easier, like goosenecks? I've never gotten the burr I want on those although straight scrapers are fine. It's hard to coordinate the inwards force with the tilt while going around the bend and the accu-burr would make that go away. I cheat on curved scrapers by using a nail punch. That way, I push straight in and the taper on the punch gives the hook. Sounds good, but somehow I never get the burr I want compared to on straight scrapers! Thanks for the nice video.

Thank you. It might have been 'ticketing'. So long ago. The Accu-Burr is good. It's also a lot of money. I would rather improve my method. Your choice. Thank you for the kind words. Jamie
