In my humble opinion the model 71 is the best big bore lever action built by Winchester, but then I'm a little biased owning an early one in the deluxe configuration.

I love mine, made in early 1941, and it has the fantastic bolt peep sight, I never liked the later side mounted Williams sight, looks stupid and it just throws off the great looks of the rifle.

I've had with one since I was 15 years old.Have quite a collection of them.Can remember when you could pick a nice One. For a couple 100 bucks, those days are long gone. Glad I bought as many as I did.

I wish they still made the silvertip ammo. I had a Browning BAR 30-06 that would consistently group under an inch with the 180 grainers.

I have 3 model 71 Winchesters in 348 Win and one in 348-450 Ackley Improved. The Grizzly Factory 348 win with 250 grain swift A-frames is the most accurate between the three rifles. Keep cranking. You have a great channel and approach to the North Country.

Beautiful rifle brother.. looking back.. I wish they pushed the 348 Winchester a little bit more.. same with the 284 Winchester! Which reminds me of two more.. the 350 Remington Mag ( 35 Whelen ) and the 6.5 Remington Mag ( 6.5 PRC ) .. their ballistic twins ❤ Anyways.. thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.. much appreciated brother 🙏

Not sure I ever saw a 348 at the local shop. Chances are I'd have one. Something about that one sound exactly right. I was never a fan of Silvertips, the Hornady's just have to be better. But you're the expert, no question about that. God I love old levers

Good video. I "Liked" and "Subscribed". Always had a soft spot in my "gun heart" for a Win. Model 71 after an uncle gave me a Winchester catalog from about 1955. Had one in my hands once at a gun shop, but the man wanted about $1400. (1998) Yikes! And a box of .348 Win. ammo was about $50. 🤧🥵 I lived in Alaska for 5 years and there are still some hunters there that use the Model 71 for Brown/Grizzly Bears and Moose. "If it ain't broke ----don't fix it"

You mentionned velocities achieved by the factory Silvertip ammo i believe in the 2490-2500fps range. I chrono's same ammo the other day and get velocities of 2370fps in my Winchester 71 (original) rifle.I have gotten similar results in past with several of my other 71's (original and Browning copies).. Even with reloads I have never gotten over 2420 fpswith 200gr bullets. what's your secret sauce? And yes, I am a 71 nut ;)!
@north613 ай бұрын
probably lot to lot variation. The Hornady lever-revoltion is always in the high 2400 to low 2500's in my rifle.
@Mark-uq9km3 ай бұрын
I'd have to pick the 444 Marlin over the 348. I have a Model 94 Big Bore AE in 444M with a 20" carbine barrel and it is quite accurate. Plus, I can put a center mount scope over the receiver. I load 240 grain Sierra Sportsman bullets at 2300 fps which are for deer, hogs and blackies. But, the pistol bullets with a low SD are not suffiecient for elk and moose. That requires the Hornady Superformance 265 grain FN at 2400 fps and over 3200 ft.lbs of muzzle energy. If I'm not mistaken, Remington and Marlin designed the 444M to replace the 348 when Winchester in their 'wisdom' decided to discontinue the model 71. Rossi is now chambering the 444M in their new R95 rifles. A lot of people are excited about that.

I have owned Marlins... like em. The 444 is a neat round. BUT, the 71 is special. You have to have it in your hand to appreciate it.
@bradyelich27453 ай бұрын
Wasn't the 444 the first big bore that was rimless? The only reason it came out.
@north613 ай бұрын
@@bradyelich2745 No the 444 is rimmed. Marlin brought it out to exploit the now missing Big-Bore lever rifle. It's better compared to the 405 Win rather than the 348, but the 405 is a lot more capable. 300 grain pointed 411 bullets at 2400fps have a fair bit of reach and improved sectional density.

Thanks for the video. Have always liked the M71 and 348. Used to have one with a scope of the right side of the receiver. Developed macular degeneration, mild cataracts, and epiretinal membranes. Had to start shooting left handed and open sights were a no-go. Finally sold it. Few weeks ago I was looking and found a partial box of factory silvertip ammo. Twelve rounds and the rest once fired. Want it?

Kicker is think it is illegal to ship from US to Canada so hopefully you are in Canada.

@@js7127 Sorry. Thought you were in Alaska. Have watched many of your videos, and liked them, but for some reason thought you were in Alaska. My mistake. Have had that ammo sitting here for several years with no use for it. Ran into a guy a while ago who had a 71 and just lived a few blocks away. Was going to sell them really cheap. But, he never showed up. Never contacted me so I put them away and forgot about them. If you find a way to get the ammo shipped to you, let me know. By the way, the scope on my 71 was on the left, not right side. Was in a little hurry to go out bear baiting and didn't realize til I was on my way what I had written. If I could have had the scope on the right, I would still have it. In its place I have a BLR in 358 and this summer picked up a Ruger 77 in 358. Got the Ruger for a song. Gun with Burris scope, 1200 assorted bullets and Redding dies with 200 new cases for 8. Couldn't pass it up. Always liked the 71. Was a good shooter too. Just couldn't see the sights any more and thought something else would work better. Have a good day.

I’m still trying to make a deal on an original mid 1950’s Model 71 or one of the Browning copies. I’ve already got 100 rounds NOS Winchester brass, part of a box of Hornady 200 grain FP and a source for more bullets. All I need is the rifle and a die set. Nothing like being prepared. Or maybe I’m putting the horse before the cart.😂

Better groups than I expected. Need you to justify your comment at the beginning about the 348 being the best moose rifle ever.

It's all about ergonomics. The wonderful balance allows for a very quick shot on a fleeting moose and lots of power for a rut crazed bull. Nothing else quite like it.
