@Rick Battle: I’m a member of Mike’s/USOG’s Patreon, even though I hardly ever watch it! You’re right, Rick, if people are watching USOG on KZbin, they should pay it forward/back. Granted…these are tough times, but for the quality of the content, the quantity of content, and how enjoyable each video is to watch-$3 or $4 is a good deal. I’ve spent hours watching this Channel, so when I get around to watching Mike’s Patreon videos, I won’t have time to watch anything else. That’s a little bit of an exaggeration but, USOG is THE BEST. No excuses!

01:33 From where I am sitting in my armchair I can see this book in my bookcase. It is a magnificent book. Of course this famous explorer, soldier and hunter lent his name to the famous and elite unit of the Rhodesian Bush War, the Selous Scouts. I remember more than a few things from the book but two spring to mind: He reloads his powder horn at his wagon from a small cask of black powder. While smoking his pipe! He suffered horrendous burns. The second thing was that he came across an indigenous native, a black man who was very very sick. Selous put him in his wagon and over a period of several days nursed him back to health, leaving him each day in the wagon to recoup while he Selous went out hunting. One day Selous returned to camp to find the native gone along with many of Selous’ possessions. There’s gratitude for you! Edit: Selous name is pronounced “Seloo.” I was in the Rhodesian Security Forces.

The Selous scouts were the creation of Colonel Ron Reid Daly if I am not mistaken. During the early 90s I worked with a guy and his partners son was ex RLI. I am reading a book at present, called Recce, by Koos Stadler, about the Small Teams. Fascinating stuff.

Seeing that target rifle reminds me of the days in my high school ROTC . We had a .22lr rifle team and our rifles were Anchutz bolt action target guns with all the attachments to go with them, … I loved shooting them and always thought about having one in my collection.

The stock is from an Anschutz 1810 free rifle (with the drop on the front end like a standard rifle, unlike the slim front end of a 1913) and the stickers are from inspection control from the matches it was used in. You can put any 54 type action in any type 54 stock. The trigger is on a dove tail rail, you can adjust it for length etc. The buttplate should have a (separate and adjustable) butt hook that bolts on the bottom. The 4mm version would be very rare in the States Those German catalogs would be worth doing a video on alone, do they still have all the one off engraved rifles and drillings in the front?.
@frufru0071

Hmm, I was looking to see if anyone had answered/comment on your question. You certainly know your Anschütz information. Have you heard of the "Finn" biathlon rifle? It looks like the rifle that-(how do I know?)-INSPIRED Fortner, maybe he acquired the Patent from this rifle? I should ask Mike! Thanks.

I have a left handed 22 lr 1613 model 54 in a left handed 1810 stock very much like that one. Turns out after much research Anschutz had left over rifles at the model change over. The tube at the muzzle is termed a bloop tube. The shorter barrel minimizes flinching and other movement while the counter weights accommodate the barrel weight. This might have been a retrofit, but is common in more recent models. Scientist here, but aperture sights are unique in that any small aperture takes advantage of the wave properties of light creating a cancellation node. In other words a small dark spot in the exact center of the aperture. Your eye is drawn to this node that makes it easy to line up with the front sight. This enhances accuracy. In essence a non-battery powered optical sight. (Powered by physics if you will.)

Many, many years ago, I owned a Savage Anshutz model 10. Hardly top of the line, but I loved shooting it. Now, 42 years later, I think it's time to purchase another used German target rifle! The aperture (globe) foresight element is apparently quite popular with BPML silhouette shooters, because it centralises the steel silhouette for an accurate shot. I picked up that info in a Rifle magazine article by Mike Venturino. One of the problems with scoped rifle silhouette shooting is that you can be distracted by the unevenly shaped (but uniformly painted) silhouette and move off centre whereas, in the field, it is easier, at least in my experience, to put your shot on target. I have watched a shoot-off between a highly competent older shooter with his self-built 6mm Remington scoped rifle and a younger woman with her Fulton Regulated No. 4 rifle (with globe foresight) for a 200 m competition with a deer silhouette painted on heavy paperboard. It took them four or five goes before she took out the win. I won this match myself, one year. With the typical wind at that club range complex, which I ran (with help from others) for fourteen years, the match is never a ‘push-over’.

As usual; a great video Sir! Thats a great rifle for 50m prone that does not leave anyone behind when it comes to equipment compared to the new, fancy looking all-stocked rifles most are using now a days. The 2012 London olympics was won with the predecessor of this rifle by Sergey Martynov form Belarus. If memory serve me right; he used a 1913 in the similar stock as you`r rifle. Roomers also said that he used a batch of ammunition manufactured back in the days in the USSR(?) At least here in the Scandinavian countries; those older match 22;s are getting very very affordable now. Probably due to aluminium stocked rifles are considered the way to go. I am my self on the look for an older free/prone rifle like this one!

What a magnificent rifle! With regards to the trigger angle and position, this does not seem to be an uncommon arrangement - certainly on my Walther LGR air rifle the trigger can be similarly adjusted, and indeed on more modern target air rifles this seems to be the case. There's a certain appeal in the aesthetics and function of these older rifles, where balance was more important than overall weight, even for very small calibres.

You should place the cartridge in the chamber and then close the bolt to protect the bullet from damage. "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication". The Z is of course for Zimmerstützen or just Zimmer. These are regulated like airguns in much of Europe. It's an old system, or caliber. Old falling block versions sometimes had a false breech and the barrel was only a few inches at the end, and had it own breech. The firing pin would run inside the part that was normally the barrel behind this.

I’m planning on getting a half decent old single shot target gun this fall, when I’ll go back to the indoor range that allows standing (Quebec has some extra quirky rules) I discovered I love target shooting, requires so much concentration that it’s almost like a tiny vacation, but I need something more suited than a CZ 452 hunting rifle. Speaking of Sauer, there are some double barrel shotguns from them at pretty reasonable prices. They’re good guns right? Like worth $450 or so? And do you know if the stock is kinda like an OU, or weirdly high like a lot of SxS?

"Don't believe anything I hear"??? Why should I watch and listen to your videos? I was brought up to listen to those with gray hair. Why gray hair? Most gray haired individuals have much greater experience than younger ones. Given that: I was also taught to take everything I hear with a grain of salt until I can prove that "hearing" true or false. Those two concepts have served me well for now 74 years. I put much more stock in the writings of a "Jack O'Connor" than some 20 year old on KZbin. Though I disagree strongly with your opening statement, I have learned much from your videos and will continue to watch them.

The 4mm rifle is a Zimmerstutzen ( chamber carbine?), target/ competition rifles. They had been shot only indoors, and as far as i know, produced up to 1990s. This Zimmerstutzen shooting started before wwl, and after wwl it became popular, because ammunition for traditional ,Feuerstutzen' ( Schützenrifle) became expensive , most popular cartridge seemed to be 8,15 x 42 R. After wwll there was a short Comeback in early 1950s, but when . 22 lr ( in Germany formerly called .22 lfb) was allowed again and quality of german target air rifles rised, the Zimmerstutzen lost popularity. The Sportordnung ( regulations) for Zimmerstutzen still exist , but only few shooters still use it. And it was a german thing only, so German Champion was the highest possible championship.

Actually the shots fired from an inaccurate rifle will make a bigger group when a good shooter or any shooter for that matter shoots it. Dr. Beeman used to have a catalog and in it were a lot of tid bits of info. One of the diagrams in it he had a circle the size of the group a firearm can make with several circles placed around the circle with their centers on the middle circle which represented the dispersion of the human error. The effects of firearm dispersion and that of human error was additive on overall group size but sometimes if the gun shot right but the human error was to the left, a center hit can be made. The human error and additive nature reduces probability of center hits and this is why target shooters want a gun as accurate as possible.

I love Anschutz rifles. I can see the historical value of what you have but for me that is where it ends. I own a model 64 and it is all that I would wish for in a .22LR made by Anschutz. If you are really into competition target match then buy a model 54 or one of their target models in the 1700 series. Some of these older outdated competition models have price tags that are way out of line considering what is available today. It would have to be a very very good price before I would even consider buying a rifle like that. What will you ever use it for? It no longer meets the criteria to be used in comp. So really it is all about the value of it as collectable. So cool? Yes, practical not so much.
