Fished this reel a few times on my friends boat. Great piece. Build quality with Accurate is always top notch. I don't own an Accurate star drag but I do own a Boss Fury 500 LD that I love. Their facility is only about an hour from where I live actually.

What determines whether or not to apply drag grease? I like to use drag grease with CF washers. I'm assuming that it's smoother and less likely to bind, but with a small sacrifice in total drag power. But maybe it comes down to personal preference. I'm a new subscriber and like learning the terms for the components. Also, you give an explanation of why they're there and how they function. Thanks!

It comes down to the material and whether it is porous or not. If the drag washer cannot absorb the grease, like teflon washers, there is no need to apply it. The recommendation on CF washers is either or, you can run them dry or if you want, a light coat of grease that is wiped off prior to install. While you can use grease on felt washers, I prefer oil. It keeps them from trying out and does. not trap the dirt and salt as much as grease, so there is less risk of tearing them up. - Dennis

Would you buy this reel Dennis?

That’s a beautiful reel, solidly built! Btw Dennis, I know you really like the Penn 500 series gs graphite reels, so do I. Well I stumbled across a Penn 555GS today for $60, I couldn’t pass it up. The reel is like new and it’ll be the 3rd 500 gs series reel I own. In my opinion, these are the nicest conventional reels Penn has ever made.

Yes they are! The 525 is the one I like most, but these are all the closest that Penn came to making a Newell reel. IMO - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle I have a Newell 332-5 that I love, except for the stainless steel, I think the Penns are on par with the Newell. For my eye, the Penn 500 series are a better looking reel than the Newell.

@@2ndChanceTackle hi Dennis, Ed again from the Jersey Shore, I had a chance to service the 555gs I picked up today. The reel looked great, may have never seen line, my question is that I noticed on Mystic parts site that the original main gear design has been changed to the type with the eared fabric drag washers. As I said, this reel appears brand new, is it worth buying the new style main gear and drag setup for the future? I noticed the original main gear is no longer available.
