Thank you for this tutorial. I have been learning to draft patterns and just wanted to mention that your method to determine the crotch depth came up too short for me. (my hip divided by 4 is 8.75). I would like to share another method that I have come across that works quite well. Measure your total length from the side seam at the waist to the floor. Then subtract the inseam length as measured to the floor. Using my measurements as an example, the total length at the side seam was 40 inches and the inseam length was 28.5. Subtracting 28.5 from 40 comes to 11.5 for the crotch depth. Another good hint to approximate your crotch extension amounts is to subtract twice your crotch depth from your total crotch length measurement (measured from center front waist down between legs and up to back center waist). Using an example of crotch length of 28" (27 plus 1" ease) and then subtracting 23" (2 x 11.5" crotch depth) comes to 5". This would be the total of both front and back extensions, so the front would be roughly 1.75" and back 3.25" . And always measure the front and back crotch lengths after drafting to make sure the total length matches closely to the total crotch length-- Better to be a bit long than too short! Thought I would pass this along in case others found it useful too.

Thanks alot for your contribution. However, this method of hip divided by 4 is not to be applied on a high waist pant as high waist pant has its own formula. But when making a normal waist pant this method works best for all sizes. Please try using it for a normal waist pant and send me review. Note, high waist pant tutorial is also on this channel. The problem with this method, and most methods that teach from the ‘industry standard measurements’ approach is that most people are not “standard”. For instance, taking a full hip circumference and dividing it by four assumes the individual’s weight and circumference is exactly evenly distributed all around. Many people are not! Three people could have the exact same measurements but the distribution is very different (one more in the back, another more to the sides, and another to the front), which would require very different patterns. These drafting methods do not take that into account. No wonder people have so many issues drafting pant patterns that fit well. And when the depth of the body is distributed differently that has to be reflected on the pattern! For those who have tried this method and not found success, it’s not you! It’s the pattern!

Hello ma, pls when slanting the 2" extension down to the waist line where you also came up by 1/2", how do you determine that 1/2" position? Because as i can see, it is out of the hip line square box.

From the 2 inches slanted line measure your waist circumference plus 1 inche dart, so at that point where you input the waist circumference, go up by 0.5 before connecting

Hi, your hip circumference 42”, does it include wearing ease? If yes, by how many inches? My hip is 45.5”, without wearing ease, I will not be able to sit in the pants.

To add wearing ease, after dividing your hip circumference by 4, add half inch to it. I didn't include it on the pattern because I always add ease while taking my body measurement ( based on my school of thought)

As per your suggestion to add 2” ease to my hip. Can I add 3”? I took my hip measurement while standing then I sat down, I had to loosen the measuring tape about 3” then its felt not too tight. While I have a prominent butt, I also have big tummy. My high hip is 43.5”, low hip 45.5”, thigh 28”, crotch height 11” & crotch length 29.5”.

I had drafted my pants pattern using your method. My front crotch length is 12.25” to the original waistline. If I go down by 1/2” as per your method, we are actually lowering our waistline right? Not reducing our crotch length? For the back crotch length my draft is 16.75”. For 29” crotch length, front 12.25” & back 16.75” it should be able to fit. I hope you are able to advise whether I’m reducing my front crotch length if I lower the line by 1/2”. After this I’m going to proceed to cut the pattern on muslin.

There are so many ways of making different trouser patterns but this is the method I use and the fitting has always come out perfect. Give it a try, you will love it. Yes 3 is standard for high waist.
