I think it's clever what Disney artists did. There is some inspiration drawn from the times in which these fairy-tales originally took place; from the collars to Snow White and Evil Queens dresses, to the Victorian-style puffed sleeves on Ariel's gown. Only instead of sticking to the traditional fashions they updated and added original details to their designs to make it their own. Thanks for this video Rachel Boyd; it was informative and interesting.

Just to clarify a few things: 1. there are many adaptations of sleeping beauty. The first tale would have been formed in the nordic sagas I believe. That being said, disney clearly adapted the Perrault's version (first pages of the tale to be precise) which date their version back to France sometime before the XVIIe siècle, since Perrault's tales gathers oral traditions. 2. Aladdin is a tale from the 1001 nights and actually take place in China... Interestingly it should blend arabic-chinese and subsaharian fashions. 3. Fairy tales (Sleeping Beauty, Cendrillon, Little Mermaid, Razpunzel, Belle) diegetically don't refer to specific places and times

Disney is obsessed with sparkles. The dresses for the time periods they're for are already gorgeous, they don't need to be glittering primary colours with lots of out of place tulle or other lacy materials to look good.

great vid! I came from Meme Mom Karolina's video. I always get so mad about these because Disney did us so dirty of their fashionable princess clothes (Cinderella is so blatantly 1950s) when we could've had interesting actual historic designs. At least the live action Aladdin is a speck more accurate than the animated version, perhaps a little more with the South-Western Asia flavour than Arabic for its inspiration if the Bollywood influences have anything to say about it, but still visually impressive (and an enjoyable movie). I'm about to check your other vids, but I'd be interested in seeing a version of this video with the live-action remakes for these films!

MiniDebz that usually my only complaint.

I mean, a lot of them (arguably most) aren't really *supposed* to be set somewhere other than a vague "Europe, once upon a time." Cinderella was a 1950s movie made for 1950s audiences. I think it's more frustrating with Jasmine because Arabia is a non-European region that gets misrepresented in Western media a lot, she/her culture deserve somewhat accurate representation, but the outfits in general are pretty clearly just supposed to be the animator's creative visions. It bothers me more when live action period pieces give everyone super modern hairstyles/dresses, haha.
@wrecked33272 жыл бұрын
LOL I feel the same way about how 80s Ariel is (I love those puffy sleeves but they scream 80s. The hair too). I think they took each era that they were going for and melded it into whatever era the movie was being developed in. For example, Snow White. She has shorter hair and the same kind of makeup as would have been worn in the 30s. Her dress is on the less puffy side... almost like they took a flapper and the look they were going for and meshed 'em together. They do that with lots of movies. Like in the 90s, all the fantasy movies made look like older fashions but with a 90s spin. They even do it with futuristic ones. For example, Back to the Future... made in the 80s so the future is EXTRA 80s (quite a feat, I might add). LOL

Hey now! Aurora and Cinderella BOTH had working class outfits that, save for the shins down, we're pretty spot on. And, Anastasia and Drizella had, at least, the right silhouette for a ball gown. I did hate that we didn't see any royalty dress for Aurora's time in this video.
@MikaelaCher4 жыл бұрын
Okay, some criticisms Aurora isn't English, most fans agree that she might be french Cinderella lived in the XIX century, around 1860. This is further confirmed by her step sisters, who both wear a dress that looks like it could be from the 1870's

Tiana (The Princess and the Frog) seems pretty spot on from this video. That dress she's in at the end that looks like a flower is very different than the rest of the movie. Tiana's friend, Charlette La Bouff, wears something that looks exactly like the picture at 3:09, and Tiana's clothes (pre-frog) looked a lot like 3:16. I think that Disney wants the clothes to look fairly modern, which makes watching some of these interesting as time passed. Hercules, The Little Mermaid, and Pocahontas have some serious 90's vibes with the bangs while Tangled and The Princess and the Frog are slightly more accurate for their specific settings because fashion now feels less specific and we call many different eras beautiful. Just my opinion though.

That last one is not quite right. It's an interpretation of the Virgin Mary (therefore what someone in the 1st c AD Israel would have worn) by monks in the 10th century.

Great video! But I have a question, historically speaking would any strictly religious artwork really be accurate for the 9th century etc? Because it was depicting events from around the 1st century. The clothing they portrayed for the virgin Mary would not have been what women actually wore in those European countries centuries later unless of course those artists weren't historically accurate either. I know the earlier centuries are very difficult to find any artwork besides religious, but I'm wondering if this would change anything.
@rachelboyd20043 жыл бұрын
Good question! Medieval Europe did not have the same appreciation for artists as we do today. Artists were often anonymous, and manuscripts were written and illustrated by monks. You’ll often see illustrations of historical figures not wearing historically accurate clothing, but the clothing of the time the artist was drawing it in. The image I used is meant to depict the Virgin Mary, but I expect whoever drew it depicted her in Medieval dress. It was one of the few contemporary images I could find while researching 10th century fashion. 😊

after doing some quick research, there's no official setting, but the movie drew inspiration from both the French and German versions of the original fairytale, the art style heavily drew from French medieval tapestries. So there's no definitive answer, just kind of "Western European" but most closely French

@dominikad.13685 жыл бұрын
@@elskabee there are 3 main early versions of the tail Italian (Basile), French (Perrault) and German (Grimm), Disney doesn't take from the Italian version as it's dark af and rather bases it on the Perrault version (as they claim). The name is French, they draw inspiration from various cultures but I think placing her in France would make the most sense

I kinda like Disney's designs but I really think that they would benefit from drawing more inspiration from actual historically accurate fashion. It would give the princesses' costumes much more diverstity and variety and the potential to stand out from other princesses. I'm not saying Disney should be 100% accurate because they don't have to, their movies are for kids and kids don't care. However, it seems like almost all Disney princesses follow one standardized "Disney" look and it's kinda boring.

hell yeee. My one thing about this video is that in Aladdin, the sultan (Jasmin's father) says 'allah' at one point when he's telling off Jasmin, so it couldn't have been pre-islamic
