This match would take place two weeks prior to these same two players competing in the finals of the Bicycle Club event in Bell Garden, California.
Here they are in a race to 13, 9-ball winner breaks match.
Jerry McWorter and Paul Potier are on the microphone to commentate this match.

Great match. Raphael is always underestimated. He reminds me of Jose Parica, the way he plays. Both of them have lived in Efren Reyes's shadow. Either one can beat anyone at any time. Thanks a lot Pat and accustats! The entire Pool community is in debt to you sir!

Rafael has a cool 2 way safety play. You're stuck with only a bank short ways across the table. He'll take the bank on, leave the cue ball up table, and hit the bank at a speed that he leaves the ball in the middle of the short rail if he misses the bank... Smart play. He gets a safe with distance and can carelessly attempt the bank. He really looks like someone that knows his own game and is comfirtable going with it.

@@jaypisme2343 That one looks cool, but really, that's the shot in this situation, and I have no clue why Paul would even consider playing safe with this good a shot. I'm guessing the camera angle is deceiving. As long as there's room to get the cue ball to the side rail off the 1, that's the play.

It was a good shot, but it is one that most pros would have made except for getting on the five ball like Efren did. I believe Efren is the best in history, I love his attitude, he is a great ambassador for pool and has a fantastic attitude. However, he got lucky getting on the five ball. Jerry thought it was on purpose, but Paul knew he got lucky to get on the five ball. Having said that, because Efren is the best kicker in history, he ups the odds significantly of getting lucky. By the way, one reason it was easy to tell he got lucky to get on the five ball is because even though Efren hit rail first like he needed to, the cueball pinned the four ball to the tit, which made the cueball move tangent to their contact point, which took it up table to the five ball. No player in history is good enough to pin the four ball to the rail off a kick and still move the cueball to the five ball the way he did. In my opinion, Efren and Rafael are the two most entertaining players of all time. I was playing Rafael in a tournament once. He hit the most amazing shot I have ever seen, and I told him so. What did he do? He kept the exact same look on his face and said..."hmmm" then hit his next shot. That was 20 years after this video. I was lucky to get the privilege of playing with Rafael many times. To this day, he is still amazing to watch. I believe Rafael might have been the best in history if he had played more prudently throughout his career. Taking too risky of shots has cost him many tournaments. When one has the incredible talent and excellent three cushion knowledge Rafael has, one has a tremendous advantage over those who might have excellent talent but don't know three cushion math.

Glad for the opportunity to tell Paul ( I’ve wondered if any of the people in these old videos go back and read the comments when the videos are re- released,some many times.)anyway,to mention to Paul how much I always respected him, as a player and as a person. I was around when Paul was very active in the States in the pro pool scene.Along with several other very (!) good Canadian players. I think now looking back that if Paul had been a regular on the pro tour for longevity, he would’ve probably been up for induction into the BCA Hall of Fame’s greatest players. Also wanted to say Paul that because of your professionalism,your pleasant demeanor and your attitude, I felt that I would have wanted you as my coach out of everybody else . I did get some input from Jerry Briseth,Buddy Hall and later from Hillbilly Bryant. But alas’, I probably started to late and didn’t devote myself as much as is required. I thought then and I still do,that I would have been better if I had had the opportunity to be coach by you. Sorry for rambling on, I never thought I would have the chance to tell you. Hey Jerry, I remember Pat Fleming saying to Grady Mathew’s during a straight pool match that he was using a 53” cue at the time. I wonder how short a cue he ended up with ? And if he has stuck with it. Regarding Jump cues,My personal opinion (and I know I’m in the minority here)is that there is absolutely no place on any Professional Tour Tournaments for the little jump cues.There used to be written rules regarding pool cue sticks. For weight, length,diameter etc. Jumping, I am not against. The jump stick has somehow demeaned the skills, finesse,the beauty of the game. The WPA (of course ) should rule on Jump cues. Good luck with that. A more pertinent and Clear and Present Danger to our pool professionalism is the PURPLE FIVE BALL introduced into professional Pool by an highly esteemed & respected entity. What possible sane explanation could there be. Paul, I ask you as a Snooker aficionado, How would you react If the “God of Snooker “ organization” arbitrarily introduced in the World Snooker Tournament…a pink seven ball and a black six ball…. Would the players accept that with no explanation,no reason. I don’t know how long snooker has been around but it has become perhaps the most highly thought of game in the Billiards world. I can’t believe the Promoters, the players,the governing body of snooker,and maybe more than any, The Spectators would sit still for it. I have seen many times, professional players shoot the purple five out of sequence, thinking it was the four ball. ( which has been the Purple ball for hundreds of years in the Whole World!) Come on WPA, make a ruling,(I think that is up to you if you are the governing body of Pool in the world) The whole rest of the world uses an orange five ball. How many of you governors would not get confused in a pool game of rotation if somebody dropped a purple five in your rack? THINK ABOUT IT. ! adios

Efren pushes out at 17:45 and Rafael gives it back to him and wins the game. 99% of players I play would not give that shot back (they pretty much will take any shot if they can see the whole ball). If Rafael gives that shot back to the best player that ever lived don't you think the average player should be giving it back against another amateur?

I wonder what one's chances are objectively speaking, takes an accurate hit whichever way one goes (I'm seeing three things one could do and honestly wouldn't bet on any being high-percentage). What I do know is Rafael is the kind of guy who'll get that perfect hit with greater consistency than almost anyone else, and yet he refuses the shot, as he prefers to put the pressure on his opponent. And sure enough, Efren does make a mess of it, so he was right.

@@LeonFleisherFan that is true I forgot about that aspect of the game. Some people I play are baffled when I give up a push. But like you said i wanted to put pressure on them. Even if they do what they wanted I’ll usually allow it if they can’t run out anyway
@LeonFleisherFan
@LeonFleisherFan Жыл бұрын
@@shanemcbride730 I'm with you, one tends to want to shoot, similarly to deciding between a safety and an offensive shot, I hate leaving the table because it's out of my control what's going to happen next, opponent may do something silly and get away with it, there's no telling, and push-outs are similar in this respect. Decision making process becomes easier once one is playing against competition of this level as they're usually going to do the smart thing, which is predictable (and the reason why push-outs without moving balls into bad position won't really buy many opportunities).

Bad racks are on the breaking player, if a rack isn’t satisfactory it’s their job to check and demand a rerack. Obviously a player should try to rack their best for their opponent but it’s not always a guarantee. At a professional level, checking the rack is a must.
