When Seiko introduced its Kinetic quartz watches they used a capacitor to store the energy that powered the watch. Granted the technology that charged the capacitor was different than Accutron’s but the issue was after a time the capacitor (like a battery) required replacement as it can only maintain a limited amount of charge-discharge cycles. Seiko solved that problem with spring drive as the long lasting mainspring’s stored energy took the place of the shorter lived capacitor’s stored energy. So when the capacitor in the Accutron ultimately fails (which it most certainly will) it may be rather inconvenient as I doubt it’s easily replaceable. Food for thought.

A breakthrough in high-horology. I am happy “old” brands are making kicking comebacks, with SpaceView and Electrostatic, the design, and specs sets you back a bit, this deserves more than USD 3,300. Easily the best review of the Accutron Spaceview watches I have seen. I am a big fan of Bulova (and Citizen) watches and would like to own one of these, but I am not sure about me spending this much on any watch. As with the Citizen 0100 or Seiko Spring Drive, the advanced technology is appealing, but my practical nature resists purchasing luxury items. Realistically, most non-watch enthusiasts would consider $500 watches to be luxury items, whereas I consider that to be the inflection point on the price vs quality/features curve.

I really do like the new incarnation of the space view. And did not escape my notice that the minute and second hand looked to be new old stock from the original. I mean, I’m sure their new remanufactured, but they are the exact same thing. And sticking with the logs was a good idea too. However, as mentioned by others here, It is quite large. Much larger than the original 214. The one I have on my wrist was actually my inheritance from my grandfather. He was a founding member of NASA and that’s where he got his.

I like the look of this watch a lot and it’s technology. My concern is that the capacitor has a limited life. I don’t look forward to having it serviced in Japan after a period of time. The index wheel of the original 214 Accutron had 300 teeth and spun over 38 million revolutions per year. No one is certain how Bulova manufactured the index wheel as it was unbelievably thin and you can't even see the 300 teeth with the naked eye. My theory is they used a modified micro gear hobbing machine (confirmed by Hetzel) which used a ground gemstone as the cutter. I still don't know precisely how they got the index gear to the correct thickness, as grinding each of the thousands produced would have taken a lot of time and effort. And some poor slob (kidding) had to affix the pawl jewels onto the super delicate ratchet fingers and make sure the jewels mated with the nearly invisible teeth correctly. And don't get me started on the wire specs for the windings that trigger the tuning fork. The whole thing is a God-like achievement.

I was initially going to buy one when pictures first leaked. I ended up not doing so due to the lug2lug distance and because the lifespan of the capacitor appears to be approx 10 years. I don’t mind the service interval - but I am concerned not many service centres will be around to assist at that time. It’s not like there are a lot of options today (although I suppose they may not be needed at the moment)
@charlesedwards79923 жыл бұрын
It wont last longer than 10 years if you where to wear this and only this??
@NilsPIversen3 жыл бұрын
@@charlesedwards7992 From the official homepage: “How long will my Accutron electrostatic timepiece last? The power life depends on each person’s lifestyle such as the number of steps to walked a day, how the person swing their arm etc . If your Accutron electrostatic timepiece is worn everyday while walking one hour, it may last up to 10 years or more.” It’s difficult to say exactly what that means. I however suspect the capacitor (and/or other parts) will have to be changed by then. Although a completely different design, the Seiko Kinetics initially used a capacitor. Later it was changed for a lithium-ion battery due to that particular capacitors poor lifespan. If I recall correctly the capacitor had a lifespan of 4-5 years and the battery 10-15 years. The Citizen/Accutron team probably looked at the kinetics challenges when they designed this movement, but I doubt the capacitors lifespan could be much longer than 10 years. Eventually it will degrade, and it does align with the FAQ’s wording. Approx 10 years is not a bad service interval, my concern is whether a local watch maker can work on the movement and source parts. It is a unique design with a quite limited production run (so far). I don’t want to be stuck with a watch I will have to ship cross border for expensive repairs when the time comes. -Although I might change my mind if they shrink the movement and keep producing these for the next couple of years. -I posted a similar reply earlier but it seems to have vanished. Apologies if this is a double post.
