The Accutron brings back memories. I'm 74 now and I remember working for the Royal Typewriter Company in New York City as a mechanic in the late 60's. I was making 110 dollars a week and the Accutron, if I remember correctly, cost me around 200 bucks. That was more than 2 weeks salary after taxes but it was so cool looking and I was proud to wear it. Don't remember what happened to it but I had it for a good while and enjoyed it. I don't wear a watch anymore but when I need to I wear a 24 dollar Casio that has a stop watch, lights up in the dark, has much alarms, tells me what time it is in countries all over the world and best of all has a 10 year battery. I hope I live long enough to replace the battery.😄

You're only 74. If you undertake all the current scientific protocols which promote longevity, I'm sure you'll not only live for decades to come but even get biologically younger than you are right now. Look it up. Simple lifestyle changes can have a dramatic impact.

I purchased my Spaceview new in 1973 with high school graduation money. It turns out it was a 1971 model which had been sitting in the store waiting for me to purchase it. At least one of the advertised rationales for the back-mounted crown was: it doesn't need winding and it is so accurate you will not often need to reset the time. Cool stuff! I still have my Spaceview and it is in my rotation. Good vid. Keep at it!

Nearly half a century ago, I had the original Spaceview Accutron tuning fork watch, and loved it. Somewhere along the meanderings of life, it got lost or stolen. When I saw this new Accutron Spaceview 2020, I was enthralled, even though the technology is completely different from the original. I agree with TGV's assessment that this is destined to be a watch of historical importance. I dove in, bought one, and have had it for over 6 months now. I love it, and it's become my favorite watch in my modest collection. However, there are a few negatives: in order to conserve power, the second hand shuts down at the 12 o'clock position if the watch has been stationary for five minutes (for example while driving, or sitting) . It continues to "keep time" but it doesn't move. The hour and minute hands do continue to move. In order to "wake it up", you have to bend and straighten your arm at the elbow about 5-6 times. Why is this important? Well it turns out that the original 1960's marketing saying, "its not a timepiece, it's a conversation piece" is absolutely true. However, when someone asks about the watch, it is inevitably in "sleep mode" for the second hand. The beautiful, mesmerizing, spinning electrostatic engine turbine at the 10:00 position on the dial stops turning while in sleep mode). You then have to do the "Accutron shake" to wake it up, which, frankly, is a bit silly. I'd like to suggest a technological solution to Citizen/Accutron: Add an eco-drive photoelectric component to the Spaceview 2020 so that the electrostatic second hand engine does not have to shut down so frequently to conserve power. By the way, when you do wake up the second hand/electrostatic motor, it sweeps slowly for about a minute until it catches up to where the second "would have been" had it not shut down, and then it rotates around the dial at the appropriate speed.....absolutely brilliant! The accuracy of this piece is essentially equivalent to a quartz watch, despite the fact that it is essentially has an automatic style rotor that charges the electrostatic components. I hope that Citizen/Accutron have big plans to develop this technology further, to miniaturize it, and to add complications like day-date, GMT. I'd like to see Tritium markers instead of standard lume, and the 12:00 marker should be different from the others, like you see in most dive watches.

My uncle (by marriage) was an instructor for the JBSW (Joseph Bulova School of Watchmaking; defunct since 1992) for forty-three years and hooked me on horology and watches when I was twelve-years-old. I still have the (M6; 1966) Accutron 214 Spaceview my mother purchased through him from Bulova for her wedding gift to my father that year which is in pristine condition with the original outer and inner boxes, battery compartment wrench, and documents which is a treasured family heirloom. I possess original Bulova marketing and technical manual documents for Accutron he gave to my father which I still marvel at when I read them as the technology was incredible for the mid-twentieth century. While the Citizen Electrostatic Movement technology for the twenty-first century Accutron is quite impressive I'm a purist and will always favor the original tuning fork time piece that is a symbol of the greatest advances in innovation that brought us to where we are today.

When I first got into watches (6 years or so), people were saying Bulova was going to focus on quartz "mall" watches - and get rid of the tuning fork logo. I'm SO glad they're going back and making autos, keeping the logo, and making fantastic original watches (as well as making new takes on classics). Very awesome of Bulova.

Brilliant video, I remember the first one you did on yours some years ago and have wanted one ever since. The movement in yours is a 214 which has the crown at the back . They later improved this with the 218 movement that had a conventional crown and additional day / date combinations . I have serviced many 218s and still find them totally fascinating. I only wished they had kept on making them, even as a re-release. Problem was when they got took over apparently all the “trade secret” tooling they had that made the index wheel was binned. I really wish you had touched on this in the video. The actual accomplishment to turn vibrations into moving gears. The idea is groundbreaking. The index wheel has some 320 + teeth on it, it’s 3/32” diameter (ish) and it has one revolution per second meaning 300+ beats per second making the tick the smoothest out there even by todays standard when you think a Rolex may be at 7-8 beats per second! All this in the 60s before modern CNC machinery . How they made those index wheels is a complete mystery and I come from a precision engineering background. Any serious watch collector needs an Accutron in their collection. The sad part is they continued to use the name and tuning fork logo even on conventional quartz watches which to me was a real shame. The last word is to the wise. There our countless remakes of the Spaceview on the internet and due to the TGV effect these things command a high price now and as such aftermarket crystals with the printed markers are available. As such it’s quite easy to convert any 214 watch to a spaceview for profit. So buyers beware, if you are after one of these then make sure you do your homework first.

Back in 2019, I bought a second hand Accutron Spaceview that had been serviced and restored online for about $500 Australian dollars. I'd never seen one in the flesh, but I had seen your review of it and was so impressed I wanted one for myself. So when this beautiful little watch showed up, skeleton dial and all, I fell in love with it instantly. It's very quirky, different, unlike anything else in my collection. When I left it on my bedside table, it used to hit the resonance frequency of the wood and make a low hum you could hear in the room. The watch also has an inscription on the back: "Al love Sue, 11-13-65". I don't know how this watch ended up online in Poland but I like the inscription very much. Only issue is the Accucell batteries for the watch run out much faster than expected!

An Accutron 214 can be regulated to run on 387s batteries. Ditch the accucell. My 5 214s all run on 387s. I get 1 year on the battery running nonstop

Without a doubt the most beautifully shot, produced and presented video that I've ever had the honor to view on KZbin. I have the same vintage Spaceview model that you do, purchased decades ago. It still resides on a Spidel Twist-o-Flex band that the original owner put it on. Still works flawlessly. It's in my rotation also with a Speedmaster from 1971, a stainless w/gold fluted bezel Rolex Datejust from 1970, and a bracelet Bulova Lunar Pilot from 2016. The Bulova Lunar Pilot sees most of my daily wrist time. I love that watch and my larger wrist size can pull it off. I'm constantly blown away with the Lunar Pilot's design and build-quality...and how much you get for your money.

What a fantastic review. I am a watch enthusiast, and am very much attracted to the technology of the Grand Seiko Spring Drive and now the Accutron electrostatic! This watch is large, but not oversized. I hate oversized watches, but this is the smallest, most efficient design they have at the moment for this brand new movement. It is not large to be large. It is miniature for what it is. To some, like me, this is an important distinction.

The miniature turbines are mesmerizing. I'd love to see Accutron add a robust, 24-hour GMT version in keeping with the original Accutron "Astronaut" line and the application of Bulova's tuning fork technology in space. The larger size lends itself to pilot watches, and it could be a good value compared to many of the other brands making that complication.

Just watched your vid again. I own an old Accutron 666 diver from 1968 - a gift from my elderly father. After a service by a German expert watchmaker at Accutrons, including a modification to allow the use of modern batteries, it runs like new and is very accurate. I love it. and I have to say these old Accutrons seem very reliable and not quite the "minefield" that many people criticize

An Accutron Spaceview wrist watch was worn by astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman onboard space shuttle Discovery mission 51-D in April 1985. MoonwatchUniverse 🧐 Onboard the Lockheed A-12 Accutron wristwatches could only be worn if the pilots wore the David Clark S901-E pressure suit which had a watch pocket in the upper left glove.

I really enjoyed this video review. It's 2023 and I was completely unaware of this watch. It has a lot of cool factor. I have an M9 (1969) Bulova Accutron Astronaut \my father gave me when I was in junior high. I stopped wearing it a long time ago, then about 10 years ago I had it serviced by a Certified Accutron Tech so it would work with modern Silver Oxide Batteries 1.5V, as the original Mercury Batteries 1.35V are no longer available. While I didn't read all the comments, I'd like to point out these original tuning forks had the 214 movements, not 281. That is what is in your Spaceview. The difference in the movements between the Spaceview and the Astronaut is that the Astronaut is hacked and is called a 214H. I have a big wrist/hands so the original Astronaut looks a little small compared to some of the dinner plate-sized watches they sell today. However, I would really like one of these new Spaceviews, better yet, the 50th Anniversary Spaceview with tuning fork movement which is a bit bigger case than the original. I own both the 2020 and an original (convertion). I can not stress how special both are. Yes the 2920 is big, however it wears smaller due to the lug design. It also extremely light. I love both very much.

The new Accutron is really a nice looking watch head on, but a bit chunky from the side. I have several vintage Accutron tuning fork watches, one of them being a 214 Spaceview and one 218 Railroad Approved model. I'm proud to wear them and they are wonderfully accurate timekeepers. The 214 was designed to run on a Mercury battery at 1.35V which is no longer available. Some people try a 1.5V battery of correct dimensions but this sometimes causes the index pawls to double-index and certainly stresses the coils and electronics. Someone makes an adapter which allows a small 1.5V cell to work through a resistor, the entire package being the correct form factor. As the battery is smaller than original, it runs down a little quicker but not too bad. 218 Accutrons run on cells available today. The crown on these is at the 4 o'clock position which is a statement of its uniqueness.

Most excellent way to spend the evening with the family! What an amazing lesson, TGV. I know I SHOULD have known more about this piece and it’s history, but I was not aware of quite a fair amount of the information in your video. The size is rather large. When you put it next to the Squale, you can really se the size of it. THE CROWN IS DELIGHTFUL on the old one. That would have been sublime. The Madmen reference was exquisitely apropos and accurate. The significance of this piece I fear has been overlooked in the general watch world. The world, in which almost every conversation involves the R-word, or references the big three. Truly, excellent job pointing the spotlight on the piece and on what Citizen, Bulova, and Accutron has done with this! Thank you as always, my friend. Onward and upward, TGV! Be well.

Once again, TGV, you've dazzled me with backstory I haven't gotten anywhere else. I've seen the new Accutron here and there (including on the wrist of Marc @ Long Island Watch), but while I got the fifty-cent tour of the thing, felt like a lot was missing, and you proved me correct. (One funny aside: every time I saw the BTtF DeLorean model in the video, something was nagging me. Then, I figured it out: the braces/spines over each of the watch's "turbines" put me in mind of the mythical Flux Capacitor. Whether it not this was a conscious video "Easter egg" on your part, well-played!)

Love my Accutron DNA Casino watch. The green rubber strap and watch case makes it a more modern watch and this natural color makes it pleasing for the eyes for the long haul. I think the hands are better to read as well. Recharging the capacitor needs some additional caution: 1hour walking (second hand is in rest mode) gives 24hours of recharge thus 7hours=1 week. If this is your only watch and if you are able to wear it in daytime this seems good but, as I am a mechanic and have more watches, pulling out the crown for storage seems mandatory to prevent the capacitor to run empty and to keep it topped up. Basically I consider this watch as a hand wound variant to set time when I want to wear it and activate the movement and deactivate when I go to bed. I understand now why there is not a screw on crown for easy disable the movement. Setting the time does provide you the bond with a watch similar like a hand wound movement IMO. Just that little bit of attention before the day starts. In normal use the second hand gets activated but when walking it tends to be in power save mode which makes sense. kr, Erik

Great Video TGV. Accutron was involved in Apollo 11 as well as 15. The EASEP equipment that Buzz Aldrin left on the surface of the moon had an Accutron timer inside it. It's still on the moon now. Just another reason they're the coolest watch in the galaxy. Agree that Accutron 2020 is such an important watch, I have so much respect for Bulova/Accutron/Citizen for creating it.

Tempted but not without concern for longevity of the storage capacitor. Some years ago we got my father a seiko kinetic and it’s weak spot was that component. I really like this watch. The size is good for me. Is there a problem if the watch is not used for a few weeks or months? Are there any issues from infrequent use? I don’t want to have to send this in for service as a result of infrequent use.

I have a 7.25” wrist and will wait for a more compact version. I have over 30 Bulova watches and am hoping their oversize phase is ending. My Lunar Pilot would probably be my favorite watch if it was a little smaller.

Great info on the new tech. I would buy one if I could afford one, not to wear but for the historical significance. I love all of my Accutron 262khz models. Hoping Bulova goes back to their vintage designs in the future.

This Bulova is insanely futuristic and high-tech looking :D I wrote it in a comment under another video, but I'll write it again... I really love all the new ideas and development in engineering, and seeing another ingenious idea for a watch movement gives me lots, lots of fun, much more than seeing a different looking watch. (I actually have another idea for a watch movement, maybe I should start a company making watches?)

Thank goodness there's a new video. Thank you so much TGV. I've been looking at loads of watches the last few days. I've ordered a couple of straps and decided to get my Rotary Aquaspeed (Breitling homage) watch a new Crystal as it's scratched up and put a Colareb blue leather strap on it as its got a beautiful blue dial. I got it for my 40tb birthday from my mum so special to me and its a good looking watch and has worked great. I'm now 47. I also looked at a Skagen titanium. They are mega thin and modern yet classic style. It's a Danish company but I'm not sure where they are actually made. They also are pretty reasonably priced. Have you heard anything good about them? And I've been wearing my Citizen Eco drive chrono every day. Still loving it.

I really enjoyed your review. I am a big fan of the original space view. I really appreciate the updated design with a definite nod to its predecessor. The size to me is perfect for my 7.5" wrist. I tend to gravitate towards the 42-46mm size.

I have my late grand fathers Accutron, however, sadly it doesn't work. I installed a new battery and it produced that iconic "hum" however not the iconic sweep. No one that I've contacted is willing to service it. After watching your video it has made my want to get that watch working more than ever before, any advise and as always excellent video.

Hi Marc, there are still some specialists on there. There is a small but strong 214 and 218 community out there, try and google them. There is a guy in Europe who repaired mine, but sadly I lost contact with him, but I found through ebay no less.. Happy hunting, I am sure you can get it up and running again!
