As a drummer myself for almost 20 years, what Chris Slade did here is legendary. Like absolutely insane from how clean he kept that going and for so long. I’ve seen this video hundreds of times and it still blows my mind. He was the best addition to that band at the time, after I heard him on the records and these live shows. Was never huge fan of Phil Rudd

From 7:17 - 9:10, just look at these three great musicians holding it down for almost two minutes. Malcolm's rhythmic A power chord, Cliff's strumming filling out the low end, and Chris's fast-paced beat on the drums with no effort or screw-ups. Brian and Angus are legends, but these guys (and Phil, too) are the fuel of AC/DC.

I've calculated that Slade hits the hi-hat 9 times per second. If he does this between 0:05 and 10:12, that would mean he hit the hi-hat at that speed for 617 seconds straight. If we do 617 x 9, we would get 5,553. Slade hits the hi-hat about 5,553 times in a span of 10 minutes and 7 seconds. If you want to say this isn't impressive, tell me how many times you can hit the hi-hat in 10 minutes and 7 seconds.

At about 4:30 Angus noticed that something is wrong with his Guitar. At 4:57 Malcolm looks around, takes two steps back and tries to shout something to Chris. Probably that something is wrong. At about 5:00 Chris was like: "Wtf, where is he?"Chris had to endure more minutes of hitting the drums at that tempo to save the performance. At 6:00 Angus appears with the Red Guitar, which was not sounded so good, so the solo was short. Chris still hits the drums like crazy. At 9:05 the black Giuitar was finnaly fixed and Angus gives a sign. Actually because of Guitar issues, they improvised and they improvised like a pros. And no one even noticed.
@maxbauer1633
@maxbauer1633 6 жыл бұрын
no not really. at 4:30 angus is done with this solo which was spot on every note and nothing wrong with the guitar. he disappears backstage getting into is oxygen tent having a quick sip of coffee and then get on the elevator platform and do his thing. it takes him less than 90 sec to get off the stage on the elevator platform which is not that long anyways when u think about it. at this point they routinely switch guitars to use the time to tune up the black one. unfortunately when he bounces his body into the elevator platform at 6:37 he damages the wireless or a cable thus the sound keeps cutting out, so this part on the elvator is cut short and he goes backstage to pick up the black SG again. takes him about 2 minutes to get back on stage, might have made a quick run to the toilet there ;) this whole thing is the same routine throughout every concert except the part where the wireless got fucked up on the elevator platform. there is actually something going wrong but you missed it :) at 2:36 and in some other moments you can hear something that sounds like backstage radio communication through the main PA speakers, malcolm notices it.
@nejamediarobertreich5125
@nejamediarobertreich5125 6 жыл бұрын
I partly agree, but.. If you look other video of the same song, like: Live at River Plate; Angus never switch a guitar. Also he never disappears in backstage, and there is no routinely guitar switch for tune up? The whole song and solo is played without interruptions or guitar switching. So, my opinion is, that this performance was not so routined. I agree about radio communication. I didn't noticed before. Very interesting, tnx for that :
@maxbauer1633
@maxbauer1633 6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your opinion. All i can say is that i play guitar and i can tell you that the solo is perfectly spot on and he went out on it just as he had intended to do, there is nothing off about it at all. At 4:20 it goes into the final part of the dramaturgy and at 4:30 its done and he holds on to the last note and lets it ring for a couple seconds before sliding his hand over the fretboard making the sliding noise and finally turning down the volume pot on the axe and running backstage. Check out premier guitar acdc on youtube, they go visit their tech at a show backstage and he explains angus guitar, equipment and how the show works. Apparently Angus does few guitar changes usually he finds one main axe that he likes very much and keeps only one or two at maximum as backup if he needs a tune up, he goes between songs to his tech at the side of the stage and asks him if he is still in tune very much, its hard at the deafening volume on stage to hear it perfectly himself. At the river plate show he did not have to leave the stage to get on the elevator platform in the first place because its connected to the stage, and apparently he felt he was in tune allright and there was no opportunity and no need to switch guitars, so he simply pulled through. At donington he had to get backstage and under or around the stage and into the audience place to get on the elevator that is quite a walk. I am pretty sure it was planned beforehand to change guitars at this point just for the sake of putting the black one on a tuner and getting it to perfect pitch as this was a taped show and they tried to get it perfect, and at this point its a good opportunity to do that. I meant to say at every concert where there is this stage setup with the elevator platform singled out he has to go backstage and disappear to get to it. Too bad angus slammed the wireless on the platform and this solo did not work and he had to cut it off early. Check this out, he goes backstage here as well, to do something else.. ;) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoenZnVmrLqdnLM

Phil Rudd will always be the signature power and swingy backbone of this band's sound, but Chris Slade's stamina is untouched. 17 minutes of this shuffle is enough to put most drummers on the ground, and Slade stayed strong the entire time. @@Rylie307 I agree with you completely. This song sounds better with Phil Rudd because he was the drummer when it was made.
