Hi! Welcome back. I’m excited to talk to you about this today-a strategy for professionals to get ahead in there career by using story to stand out and ACE interviews. And not just professionals-if you think about it, we’re being “interviewed” a lot. Any time we’re meeting someone for the first time-personally or professionally-it’s an interview of sorts. I’m sure you were on a couple first date/interviews….And I’m excited because, in the conventional interview sense, this is a recurring email I get from people “Kindra, I just interviewed for my dream job and got it because I told stories.” “Kindra, I was so nervous in a recent interview, but I told my story like you said and I got the job!” I GOT THE JOB is one of my favorite subject lines I get-and whether or not you’re looking for a new professional opportunity, everyone can learn something about standing out in high-stakes situations. So! I’ve two big tips for using your story to rise through the ranks. FIRST, BE PREPARED. I know what you’re thinking, "Obviously I'm going to be prepared when I go into an interview." But I want you to be prepared from a storytelling perspective. The only thing worse than not telling stories in an interview is telling bad stories-ones that ramble or don’t have a point. Bad Stories are worse than No Stories. Before you go into the room, have a set of 5 or 6 stories that illustrate the skills you are most competent in and illustrate why you are perfect for the position. Spend time PRACTICING the stories. Keep them short and to the point, and make sure you make a point with your stories. Be prepared. Second, Be THOROUGH. One of the great things about stories and storytelling is, when you tell a complete story-one with a narrative arc and a little suspense, struggle or discovery-the person listening to that story engages. Their brain naturally starts creating images to go along with the words you are speaking. In an interview this is particularly advantageous; when there is a sea of candidates and they go back to look through the applications they will remember you and your stories because they played a part in creating them. If you are going to use stories, make sure you are concise but thorough and vivid. Include some details, give their brains something to play with so you’ll be more memorable. Before I let you go, here’s one last bonus insight- When they ask you to "tell us a little bit about yourself," I want you to be prepared with a story that illustrates the most important characteristic you’ll need and have to be successful in the new position. Tell that story. THEN, talk about a few of your resume bullet points. THEN, as you wrap up, come back to the story you told in the beginning.
That way they get a real glimpse at your character; not just he resume that they have sitting in front of them. I've had pilots land jobs. Judges land jobs. People in big tech firms land jobs. Executives and beginners a like. Dream jobs all because they use storytelling to their advantage in interviews. Some interviewers specifically stated the way in which the candidate clearly and confidently spoke about themselves through story gave them a leg up. Yay us! That’s all for now. I hope you found some value in that answer and the next time you find yourself in an interview, you are sure to blow them away. We will talk to you again really soon. Thanks for watching.
