So, I had a dream where there was a "hidden" multiplayer game-type in Ace Combat 7 where you play in a 128-player furball aerial battle. 16 squadrons of 8 planes each, shoot each other down, secondary objectives, etc. whoever scores the most points wins. In addition, some superweapons from past Ace Combat titles come in to play to add more to the chaos! The Excalibur firing its huge laser from space slowly strafing the area. Its spiritual successor in the Arkbird firing its smaller, but more precise laser catching anyone who's unfortunately too slow or flying too predictably. Stonehenge firing from afar preventing anyone flying above a certain altitude, while the Scinfaxi/Hrimfaxi submarines launch ballistic missiles preventing anyone flying below a certain altitude. The Chandelier fires a string of shells that turn into cruise missiles that go after NPC allies and marked as a secondary objective. Even the mighty flying fortresses such as the Hresvelgr, the Gleipnir, the Aigaion, and the Arsenal Bird make an appearance to the carnage. Hell, even the SOLG joins in (cuz fuck you that's why) on firing its kinetic energy weapons to wreck havoc. And depending on the map, multiple squadrons might have to fly through Megalith or the Avalon Dam to prevent any nuke launches that would prematurely end the match, but also award a substantial amount of points to lower-placed squadrons that help destroy it. It's an amazing, clusterfuck of an experience. ...However, on one particular match, after the 1st place team scores the winning point in which the game usually ends, a cutscene ensues: You hear "Rex Tremendae" play. "Begin the A.C.E.S. Project" says an unknown voice. Then all of a sudden, 8 planes not belonging to any of the 128 players show up in a formation. It gets tense. All of a sudden, you see the planes, and to your shock, awe, and horror, they're all the main protagonists of past Ace Combat games flying in their respective superplanes (with their personal livery/skin) introduced in their game. They are as follows: ADF-01F "RAZGRIZ" ADFX-01 "GALM" X-02A "MOBIUS" CFA-44 "GARUDA" XFA-33 "GRYPHUS" X-02S "STRIDER" XFA-27 "SCARFACE" GAF-1 "ANTARES" As you sit there wondering "What in the actual fuck is this overpowered squadron", a freaking 9TH plane comes in right behind them, and it reveals itself: XR-900 "NEMO" Not only there are 8 Aces of Aces flying in formation, but an AI-controlled monstrosity is flying aside them! The cutscene ends, and a mission update appears. All the 128 players in their 16 squadrons are now marked as "friendly" to each other. The soundtrack "Megalith -Agnus Dei-" plays. The 9 planes that suddenly appeared are marked as enemy "TGT". But the only objective that's given to every squadron by their AWACS, is to "SURVIVE".

No, Megalith was not designed to take down asteroids. It was designed to weaponize asteroid debris in orbit by 1) painting it with a laser, 2) launching a small missile, and 3) having the missile hit the debris at such an angle that it would become its own meteorite bomb and strike the planet. This game popularized the formula. But Ace Combat 3 is the one who started it. AC3 is the first one that fleshed out the world of Strangereal and introduced the storytelling-heavy formula that found later in next AC series. To bad Namco was a tool and decided to butcher the storyline of AC3 when they released it outside Japan. And if you look closely from AC4-7(and X), the story is slowly building towards the state of the world in Ace Combat 3 which is in far future where all governments have collapsed and got replaced by Mega Corporations.

There's something callous and bleak about how Mobius is treated in comparison to so many of the other Aces throughout the games. He's initially treated as a new blooming Ace that might finally be able to challenge the Aces of his era, but by the time they finally see him as an "Equal" he brings them down with minimal effort. Unlike most playable Aces nobody really tries to communicate with him, they have to focus completely on surviving, we don't even get implied conversations like we do with Blaze, Cipher, Trigger, etc. From the perspective of most Aces, Mobius has gone beyond their level and is something of a super-weapon in his own regard, all other protagonist Aces are treated as something that can be overcome with enough effort. But Mobius? best you can do is hold him off and hope you can make him stay in place long enough to run out of ammo or fuel.

Imagine the fear that the pilots defending Megalith had. You just activated a major superweapon and you know ISAF is gonna be coming. Which means Mobius 1 is coming. And when he shows up, there's not just one of him, but *SEVERAL!* This monster basically wiped out Erusea's forces single-handedly, took out Stonehenge and Yellow Squadron and now you have to deal with an entire squadron of him. Phantoms, yes, but they don't know that. They probably think he's some kind of demon that multiplied. And it's even more crazy since these guys are basically rookies. They're nothing compared to the Yellow Squadron in which they were honoring. All in all, those pilots knew they were gonna die in that moment.

Mobius Squadron is formed out of the ISAF pilots who've been alongside Mobius 1 through the game, some of them since the very beginning in Sitting Duck. I always thought the significance of them all getting the Mobius paint job was that every single one of them was an ace who'd survived their own adventures to make it that far. ISAF sent the very best they had to Megalith and they wanted the Eursians to know it.

Honestly? I would love to see something akin to the Armored Core Nexus Disc 2: A "Best of Ace Combat" collection of missions. I've played the Ace Combat games since 4, on the PS2, and for whatever reason the sound tracks on 4, 5, 0, and 7 are all absolutely incredible, and the stories are fantastic to boot. Zero went with a Spanish flamenco theme for their music and boy did they knock it out of the park with that idea. 4 5 and 0 are no shit top 10 of all time soundtracks for me. The story for 4 is two simultaneous paths: one is you, the player, playing the game as Mobius 1, and the other that plays as beautiful painted storyboarded scenes between missions is about a boy orphaned by a notorious Belkan (I think, been a while) pilot whose kill crashed into the kid's parents house. The town gets occupied and the squadron, with that pilot, get stationed off the highways on his town. He lives at his uncle's bar which the squadron members frequent. Which is quite a lot of story for an arcade flight sim. I find that a lot with the AC games. They go above and beyond to really make a home run out of what could have just been completely ignored, like the story in an arcade fighter pilot game, and the soundtrack, which needs to be good but not THIS good.

Yep. Definitely. Loved this track for years but now it hits even deeper since I've come to learn more about my faith (Catholic). For some reason this version is so incredibly... Catholic in a way. It really encapsulates the battle between good and evil and Our Lord Jesus Christ's ultimate victory over Satan when he died on the Cross for us. I can literally see the angels singing this loud and proud after Jesus Christ's ascension. Pretty awesome if you ask me. :)
