Ace Combat 5 (Emulated) - M18+: 8492

If a squadron vanishes in the mountains and only Belkans are there to see it, does it exist?
Just wish the enemies used a different AI pattern here. Their super aggressive tail chase and bleh maneuvering when out of it in not a winning combo. Other than that, it's a far better "ace" squadron battle than what Grabacr or Ofnir provide.
Also, side note - look at the time stamps when Pops and Genette talk, and when Wardog lands. Times flies by when you're not noticing!

Technically, I guess you could say it did have one. It's called Area 88, and its a two-part anime OVA about mercenary fighter pilots! Technically, Area 88 was what inspired Ace Combat, as the Manga of Area 88 ran from 1979 to 1986

Probably the most challenging dogfight in the game right there, not that there's much competition for that title! Ah yes, about 1 minute and 10 seconds of dialogue equals 19 minutes in the story, time is strange in Strangereal! Man, I never get tired of Grimm's face when he asks if he did something wrong, poor guy. XD

Definitely challenging to kill all of the enemy planes. Even more challenging is to kill Twicedead. (Dat name tho) Also probably my favorite cutscene in the game. Action! Drama! Suspense! Even if the plot reveal is pretty silly. That'd be like if the Cold War escalated because Germany sent fighters who were secretly Nazi sympathizers to America and Russia to stir up shit.

To be fair, the Nazis in both countries did stir shit up. I mean, Germany had no real intelligence on either one and thus lost the war. Yet, once they realized that they had to offer something to escape their crimes, they suddenly had super secret information on whomever were their enemies. And for that to matter they had to sell one side a bunch of stories about the other. First they created fake intelligence, then just kept building on it. It was specially the case for the US, where powerful people already wanted proof to justify the Red Scare and military build up.

Well by AC5's reckoning, it's not 'really' supposed to be a winnable battle. TBH I've never been able to manage, at least using a plane that's also good at Fortress.

And that's why it feels so great to beat it. I'm frankly a sucker for some clichés, and the good ol "you're not thinking of doing X, that's insane" always hits the spot for me - specially when you're given the option not to. They can be annoying, though, because they are extremely aggressive and will not let go of your tail. But they also have a high tendency to overshoot you in formation in low speed turns, allowing for silly stuff like rocket quads and whatnot. Slamming the brakes is really the most viable solution here, and anything above 60-70 mobility should do the trick.

Yes, it does delete some of the false radar contacts. I believe the Tornado ace also does that.

This mission had me freaking out during my Ace run where I tried not to die(I crashed into my wingmen in Journey Home so I didn't count that). So much so I actually bailed out of it and left.

None that we're aware of for the specific number. High squadron numbers are typically used for more secretive, special purpose or testing squadrons, though, so such a high number is suitable for a secretive agressor squadron in the Osean Air Defense Force.

Wardog/Ragzgriz are the good guys, but the 8492nd squadron (enemy spies) tricked the Osean military into thinking RAZGRIZ were the spies. Pops is a former member of the Belkan air force, Belka is the country that the 8492nd squadron is actually fighting for. Bartlett is the first captain of Wardog Squadron, but he got shot down in the first mission and Blaze (The player) replaced his spot.

The instigators of the war were Belkan ultranationalists who wanted Yuktobania and Osea to fight and exaust each other so they could move in and take over their territories. To this end, they engaged in various sabotages, the spaceship with the laser, bombing a school and framing Razgriz(the good guys), abducting the Osean president and the Yuktobanian prime minister, and lied to the reinforcements that the sortie was a drill during the ceremonial flight. Pops is a Belkan defector, it's the balding guy. Bartlett is your flight instructor from Mission 1, he caught wind of the plan the Belkans had and feigned being shot down to disappear from the radar.
