Fun Fact: The song “First Flight” from this game was played at the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony. It plays when Ukraine is introduced. I still find it hard to believe that our stupid little plane game was noted at the goddamn Olympics.

The flyby when chopper dies in this game nearly drove me to tears. For context, I live near dc, so I’ve seen some honorary flybys, and I can say that the flyby they did is a real-world flyby, and that was just an amazing detail on top of an incredibly emotional scene. You’re getting near the end of the golden trilogy, so make sure you stay alive at the end…buddy.

Couple of corrections; there's actually 29 missions in any given playthrough, and Three of them are actually chosen by what response you give to Chopper on what you thought of "the song he showed you" the previous mission (yes its random like that). Also Edge/Rei Nagase is a bit of a legacy character like Cid in Final Fantasy, they're not the same character. (There was also a Nagase in mission 11 of AC04) Fun fact though, world building material from the Project Aces website for the game has the Arkbird Astronaut who bailed out being Slash from AC2.

I was going to bring the mission selection thing up. but to be fair I played this game consistently for over 5 years before I learned of this mechanic from a FAQ. So I can see how someone would miss it on the first play-through.

Along with that, in AHL's remake of 2, Edge's profile mentions she dreams of flying commercial airliners when its all said and done. So that means she's probably the same Nagase in AC04 through retcon. But 5's has her own later in series link.

I’m not going to lie about this, and I think a lot of fans will disagree with me strongly, but I like that the Project Aces team makes the player and the rest of the squadron use an F-5 for the first couple missions. F-5’s, F-20’s and T-38’s are jets that the military has used for years to train uncertified pilots. I respect that the team really did their research and added little details like that into the story. I also want to point out that War Dog squadron goes through so much in the first few missions using just training jets that aren’t even generationally viable for modern combat. Just that alone shows shows War Dog’s teamwork compatibility, determination, and collective skill versatility, but also goes to show that Blaze is a really good squadron leader, and that Nagase’s choice to step down and make him the flight lead for the squadron was a very wise decision. I know I wrote like a whole book here, lol but 5’s just a really good game, and I wish a few of the concepts that Project Aces used for 5 would have carried over to other games. I think it would have been cool to give squad commands to Strider Squadron as Trigger. All and all, I just feel like 5 broke ground that NONE of the other games broke, and it’s sad to think that there probably won’t ever be a successful numbered, or spin-off game that captured that magic in a bottle like AC5 did

i really appreciate the praise for 5's story mainly in lieu of how people so often laud zero as having the best one. i think it's because a lot of western ace combat fans are turned off by 5's very gundam-esque war drama approach and believe zero's story to be more realistic and grounded but i just adore how massive and epic it feels without being bloated. like you described, going from a rookie team equivalent of a coast guard flight to mysterious black-clad war heroes is just so romantic and stylish. you go through an ENTIRE war with your buddies, it all just feels so complete
@Spaced92
@Spaced92 2 ай бұрын
I don't think AC5 is very Gundam honestly, Gundam is generally more grounded. I'd say it's more of a fairytale with the Razgriz stuff, I personally don't like the story as much as 4 or Zero, 4 was more compelling to me and Zero was more fun and camp while still having its serious moments (the night bombing mission is perhaps the most uncomfortable in the series). But 5 was doing something different and it's neat, I just wish the game didn't have so many gimmick missions, or that they didn't pull the "Belkans did it" thing.

Nagase in this game is actually a completely seperate character from Nagase in ACE2. There are multiple characters with that name in the franchise, and in almost every game since 2 one of them appears as a sort of series tradition, either as an actual character or a short cameo.

This game got what it takes to bring it to the skies unknown than never before. For it's time since the release of The Unsung War, this was really the Ace Combat for me. Thankfully it has a lot of planes on it and picking for your own needs and wants. Depending on mission requirements that is. I will certainly play this game until i'm on my death bed. I think you'll notice the difference in how the controls feel when you play 4 again. 4 still has a little bit of the weight and momentum that 3 had, and 5 basically removed all the weight and momentum from the gameplay finally and forever. I didn't notice the difference when I played 5 for the first time after playing 4, but the difference became very obvious after going back to 4 after playing 5 for a while. Also, rolls are a lot faster in 4

Great video, however, there are alternate missions you play, when a coin is flipped the next mission depends on if it lands on heads or tails. It’s not luck dependent however. In the previous mission chopper asks you about music. Wether you answer YES or NO you get a different mission. The biggest control difference in AC5 is because of the wingman commands. Because they mapped those to the d-pad, they changed switching the camera pressing in the right stick and autopilot to holding down both yaw buttons. Also on higher difficulties (hard and higher difficulties) you get limited machine gun ammo. Only limiting you to the first jet for the first four missions gets really annoying on replays. The Kei Nagase in 5 is a different Kei Nagase than the one in 2. They like putting a person named Kei Nagase in the games. AC2 is still canon. I can’t wait for your next Ace Combat review! Which is totally going to be Ace Combat Zero and not an obscure GBA spinoff!

During my first playthrough I hadn't realised about what the coin flip meant and I got totally stuck on one of the missions that I had to do because of my original choice. It wasn't until I was googling help on how to beat the mission that I realised I could change it by restarting the game and making a differen choice and it opened up the entire game for me, right up to the point where I got completely stuck on the final mission!

It was the lore of the later parts of the series that got me interested in Ace Combat. Thought it had always had these elements in some form, I love the story and the art. It feels like such a rich universe to explore. There is a blending of so many aspects. Iconic, real aircraft and advanced fighter jets. Cultures that have recognisable architecture and clothing while not screaming, 'they're just alternate Russian, or they're the British from the WW2 era. A familiar level of civilised development abut also superweapons and flying fortress.' This is the kind of lore that I'd love to read novels on and hear an alternative but parallel world history.

One thing you didn't comment on, but that I'm sure was basically cut for length (and you were right to do so ultimately.) is the symbolism of the fairy tale, A Blue Dove for the Princess. (Assuming I recalled the title correctly.) and the mythical figure of Razgriz. Sure, it's kind of silly and a bit obtuse, but the fact there's a full fairy tale behind the callsign is something I treasure from the game. It'll be amusing when you hit AC 7 (as for some reason KZbin thinks your playing here, and that made me laugh to see.) and a familiar name shows back up.

The devs really pulled out all the stops when developing this game, trying to cram every mechanic you can think of to maximize replayability. They even added a hidden collectable mechanic: The most powerful plane in the game can only be unlocked by destroying the five FALKEN hangars hidden throughout the campaign missions that do not show up on radar until the player gets close to them. that said though it's also agreed that it's also this game's major criticism in that the scope is too big for its own good and even avid players can get fatigued from trying to 100% this game. The devs seems to agree as every subsequent game in the series is shorter than AC5 and tones down on the melodrama a fair bit and focused more on innovating the gameplay.

AC5 was my second Ace Combat game I played (after AC7) and I must say that, for now, it's my personal favorite in terms of the story. I really enjoyed it, especially in the "second part", where we're officialy Ghosts of Razgriz. Saving both Harling and Nikanor in order to end the war, and then combining our forces to stop the Belkans really played well for me. I even think that "ACES" mission was better than the final one (but still, The Unsung War is an amazing piece of music). The end cutscene made me very emotional with how well it was written (not to mention The Journey Home which is another great song). I think my biggest problem with this game are some gameplay mechanics. A lack of some mechanics to be more specific. After playing AC7 I didn't know how previous games looked like. So when I found out that AC5 doesn't have a checkpoint mechanics, I wasn't very happy about it. I didn't play lot of flying games (and with addition of playing on a emulator with over 10 year old XBOX 360 pad) so I died quite often at the beginning. Also, I have the same problem with running out of missiles in some missions. Overall, the game is great and I really recommend it to everyone. I know I'll be getting AC 6 Fires of Liberation this Christmas and I'm really exicted to play it

Razgriz is love, Razgriz is life. Ace Combat 5 isn't my favorite but it's a solid ride that's worth going back to once every few years. There's a few missions I find a bit too tedious along with the mid mission dialogue being too much of a pace breaker for me but I'll take that as game flaws over what other games that I try to enjoy but fall flat do. Here's hoping Zero goes good for you and I hope you like flamenco in your soundtrack.

to me, AC5 is the best among 4 and Zero mainly because its heavily focused on story. most AC story were playing in this power fantasy where a single pilot practically eradicates the enemies while also telling other's perspective of one or few war victim/vets. i mean that's the point of AC, however, in AC5 you get to actually experience the war with your squadron and getting to know them, how the war affects your squadmates, while also being a legend in the war, both ingame and cutscenes. this kind of storytelling unfortunately is never used after AC5 anymore. you could argue Zero did the same thing, but it's severly toned down, imo.

This was my first ace combat game that I owned and I didn't know what I was getting into. The trailer that popped up throwing orchestration and Puddle of Mudd. The first thing to come to with the talks of Demons was "oh this is like Devil May Cry but with planes" (don't ask how I come to that, I was dumb). But what I got was a great story and a killer game that got me hooked into the franchise. It was the first time I was so determined to get S rank on every mission and get all the planes including the hidden Falken. I was so determined to be good I decided to S rank the final mission with the trainee jets and tunnel run kill the satellite. (For those that don't know the solg has a tunnel that you can fly through and one shot it). Man I was even hyped when it turned 2010 because some of the people in gamefaqs forum were marking the time and dates of the missions to run it as a community event. I may like AC0 a lot more now and have come to call AC5, Ground Combat 5 with how many air to ground missions you face rather than dogfight but this game has a place in my heart as being one of my favorites of the series.

As for the issue with running out of missiles, I believe you are also expected to command your wingmen to attack. It's a bit sluggish, but sometimes they do help out. If they hit a target, you'll see the color change in the radar, so you know that you only need to fire one machine gun shot to finish it off if it's a fighter or two or three more missiles if it's an attacker or heavy bomber respectively. Also, the game features an in-universe means of conveying whether or not your selection of planes will have enough missiles, since different planes carry different amounts. If your wingmen complain about the chosen planes before you start a mission, chances are you will have to be VERY conservative with your missiles to make it through the mission, and running out still may be unavoidable.

One subtle but sweeping change from AC04 to AC5, which I never fully understood until recently when watching someone else's playthrough, is that ALL the objectives and failure conditions in AC5 have a logical basis in things physically happening in the game world. As far as I can recall, there's not a single "abstract" objective like "kill X points worth of enemies". I think this is directly responsible for the increased variety in the missions. In hindsight, I can tell that this principle of tying the mission objectives to concrete in-game events was a mandate during the game's development. For an example, we can compare the beach landing missions of AC04 (Operation Bunker Shot) and AC5 (Lit Fuse). In Bunker Shot, the first objective is to hit a score threshold, and then the 2nd objective is to kill a wing of A-10s attacking the central beachhead. Nominally, you're providing CAS for the beach landing, but mechanically you don't actually need to pay any attention to the allies on the ground. You can just fly to the nearest enemy, kill it, and repeat while ignoring everything else. In that sense, the objectives are abstract: the game just takes it as read that if you kill enough enemies, then the landing will be a success, and if you take too long to do so, then the landing will be a failure, but there's no concrete connection between the two. In contrast, the objective in Lit Fuse IS close air support. The mission is accomplished when the allied ground forces successfully take over the enemy fortress, and it fails if all allied ground forces are killed. It literally doesn't matter how many enemies you kill. As long as you understand how the mission works, it makes things much more engaging, because instead of just killing every enemy you find and then moving on to the next, you have to carefully prioritize the targets that are doing the most damage to the allied ground units in order to minimize their losses. It gives your brain something to do other than just lining up the next target in your gunsight. I never really consciously understood this difference back when I first played AC5, because I always paid attention to the radio chatter and followed what I was supposed to be doing, which meant that I was always focusing on the in-universe stated objective anyway, even in AC04 when the true objective was just "kill stuff". But even so, I think I felt the greater dynamism in the missions of AC5.

And although I absolutely love the soundtracks to both games, I slightly prefer 5's because so many of its tracks have emotionally powerful compositions. It even remixed Blockade, which was probably my favorite track from 4. AC5 was one of the few games I 100% completed, hunting down every special ace in each mission, and unlocking all the different color variations for the planes, and getting the highest score in all missions. I also loved the experimental/scifi plane designs you could eventually unlock. A tremendous amount of replayability!

Started playing the AC franchise this week.. finished ac4 a few days ago and ac5 an hour ago... Im really confused how you didn't feel the difference between the controls in both of them...ac5 handles MUCH better, and 4 is way slower/sluggish. Again, amazing video as I've come to expect from you, one of the best parts of playing ace combat has been watching your videos right after!

The people pointed it out already, but they didn't give you the full picture. There are like 4 Nagases in entirety of Ace Combat games, 3 of the in strangereal. 1st one was your wingman in 2nd game, 2nd was a second pilot of an airliner you escorted in one of Ace Combat 4 missions and the 3rd is the one from 5, who is also featured in one of following games. Ace Combat Infinity is not part of Strangereal continuity technically so the Nagase there is also a different one, you could say.

So for the Edge situation the Edge from AC2 and AC5 are 2 different pilots. The AC 2 Nagase does appear in AC4 as an airliner pilot

My first play through of the game, on one of the desert missions I had ran completely dry of ammo. I was on Hard so even my gun was dry. There was one TGT left and I flew up near it. I watched Chopper target this E-767 and chase it through the terrain(yes they went under the ground and popped back up) and then kill it, securing a victory.

Random correction since I didn't see it mentioned by anyone, Bartlett is the only squadmate you can actually crash into, I've had several instances of my squadmates flying directly into me and not dying because of it. I believe it has something to do with him being marked with that big square marker, but I'm not sure.

I love this game's improvement on the pressure-sensitive button controls. It makes the throttle feel less like you're pushing the lever as hard as you can. And the map controls is intuitive.

I'm still curious how did they get the information on F-35C... In 2004 and likely earlier than that (F-35 series had their maiden flight in 2006, and have only started entering service in 2015 and onwards + C variant in particular only came to US Navy in 2019 and sees no service in other countries as of now)

Ace Combat 5 is the only Ace Combat to get an official HD remaster. However, it is only available to players that preordered Ace Combat 7 for PS4. Fans speculated that Bamco can't sell it because that would require relicensing all the planes. However, giving it away as a preorder bonus doesnt count as making a sale.

A lot of missions in this game I just found incredibly tedious, like the avoid the radar missions and follow the guy around the island mission. I appreciate what they were going for as far a having variety, but in general I didn't like any of the missions more than what we saw in 4. Also I hated the questions that would come in the middle of intense battles that basically just substituted for commands you could give your wingmates at any time. I will say, I kinda screwed myself by playing on hard first, because I had just come of 4, and I really didn't feel the difficulty level differences in that game, so I think that added to some of the frustration in missions where I'd get most of the way through and get taken out by 1 missile or run into my a wingmate.

The aircraft rolling mechanic was more sensitive in 04. They went on to build ACX for the PSP off of that. 5 and Zero are the same though so it feels consistent.

I got into Ace Combat after playing AC7. I liked the story so much that I went ahead and played the Strangereal games backwards. Start with AC6 to AC4. The stories in the games were great. Unsung War for sure is in the top 3 for best story. I hope the next upcoming Ace Combat game provides new game mechanics like going into a mission with more than one special weapon. As for a story for the next game, it should take place in a nation we never went to before.

For the record, Nagase in Ace Combat 2 is still canon in Ace Combat; she appears in Ace 04 as the pilot of one of the ISAF spy planes in the escort mission. The Edge in this game is a completely distinct character that happens to have the same name and callsign... she will herself have a subsequent cameo in AC7 that's actually really important to the ongoing plot of the series, but I won't spoil that for you.

I loved this game right up to the final mission where you had to fly through a ridiculously long and cluttered tunnel (why don't fighter jets fly through ridiculously long and cluttered tunnels in real life?) and gave up after about 50 attempts. Fortunately, thanks to Action Replay and the internet I was able to download someone elses save file and open up the game for me! What is it about Ace Combat and flying inside structures?

I loved this game. The dynamics, the characters were awesome, the plane tree was the best. The music score was supreme! If I would have any gripe of this, it would be the 'kumbaya' fricken hippie dialogue about anti-hate, anti-war, and socialist themes that were strewn throughout the game, which was difficult to hear considering it is about a war in the first place. Almost as annoying as the satanic references in Acecombat Zero, the demon lord, and that stuff. However, Zero had its own great soundtrack to it as well.

I really need to get back to playing this game and 0 because I remember that a friend of mine stated that these 2 games were among the best in the original trilogy or at the very least 0 is the best with this one not coming too far behind. But yes seriously I need to get back to playing this game since I don't think I went through as much as I did with 0 but it's easily one I can obviously recommend..... And now we prepare for the awesome Spanish guitars!

I managed to play Zero before 5 (because it was 2006 and Zero was all they had), and I recommend newcomers do that because the plot twist in 5 becomes more powerful to me. Having seen what Osea and Yuktobania did to Belka 1) I could not help but kinda feel sorry for Belka and 2) that was the best possible vengeance: have two best friends fight and kill each other while you watch and laugh. But the hatred needs to stop somewhere and Belka had to be stopped.

AC5 is my favorite AC and to me it's the best so far, not because it's a perfect game, but because of its story. I mean you actually feel for the characters sometimes its very cringy, but with a good sentiment. Also ut had a lot of content, the longest campaign and set the story for ACZ. Wingmen AI was bad.

Granted, it sn't perfect (the kill count bar can take a while to fill and i had a few instances where an enemy ace flew through and underneath the ground, not to mention on a replaying this again on a different I experienced a game breaking bug on the first mission) but it was a certainly a good time.

I'll say, there is one difference between AC04 and AC5 gameplay, and that is the flight model. AC5 marks the point where they started getting more arcade with the models. Planes are more responsive, have a lot less inertia and stall a lot less easily and more controllably. It's not as big a shift from 4 to 5 as it is from 3 to 4, though.
@Animus_Altia

I feel like the perfect execution of the narrative within the arcade flight combat format was very underappreciated here. No other AC game has come close to such a perfect mix of anti-war sentiment while dstill indulging in a fantastic air supremacy power fantasy. So many other AC games it feels like you kinda just proceed victory to victory, generally with a setback here or there from an enemy ace squadron or a Superweapon, but things keep proceeding in your side's favor and usually it's only by the very end of the game that you really get acknowledged as the gamechanger you have been. In 5, however, you start with small but very important victories, the same little setbacks as usual... But then odd things start happening. Accusations of attacking civilians. A squadron that doesn't supposedly exist. You take down two Superweapons and the your military REALLY starts putting you at the forefront of every operation they can both because they openly acknowledge your insane combat value, but also because you've become such a force to be reckoned with that your allies and enemies both call you the Demons of Razgriz in reverence and fear respectively... But you're TOO good. You're literally about to win the war and the real players behind the scenes can't have that, so they do everything they can to have you eliminated. The attack on the stadium and killing Chopper. The way your squad truly becomes demons after one of your own was shot down, according to your terrified enemy. Then the mystery squad ambushes you on the return flight from a very long and grueling mission, only to fail that and resort to poisoning your own COs against you. Having to fake your deaths, go off the grid of the whole war, and coming back as lingering ghosts to stop the war as a third party, truly becoming the legendary Razgriz back from the dead to stop the Belkan schemes. It's all so unexpectedly brilliant and emotional and thematically resonant for this kind of game, and there's nothing else like it in the whole series or even the rest of the genre.

Some corrections 0 the war wasn’t initiated by Belka it was by a nationalist group of Belkans called the Grey Men. 1 there are 3 characters in the Strangereal timeline with the name Kei Nagase, firstly there’s the one who appears in Ace Combat 2/Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy and Ace Combat 04 (Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy even makes a reference to how this Kei Nagase wants to become a airliner pilot which she dose in Ace Combat 04) then there’s the Kei Nagase who appears in Ace Combat 5 and Ace Combat 7, lastly there’s a Kei Nagase who appears in Ace Combat 3 as a member of Ouroboros.
