I've made foam armor twice now, I racked my brain for a few days thinking of how I could get a piece of pbc pipe into some foam to act as a back bone for a sword. Thank you for the video. Now I am inspired.

The sanding is WAY easier if you cut a bevel on each of the edges first :) If you are planning on making more than one sword, it's also worth noting that you can get a mini hand held belt sander for 30 bucks which can cut down on sanding time as well.

Something slim like the shaft of a golf club might work better to get a thinner blade, and the bevelling wasn't too bad considering you did it by hand and not with a belt sander. Great build, as always the weathering made the piece.

So, would this type of sword be safe for LARP?
@Apathetic_Moose_Inc6 жыл бұрын
I don't see that anyone has replied to you, but I will say each LARP has its own weapons rules. Some allow wooden cores, others require fiberglass or CPVC. There's also the issue of padding, since some have specific padding rules. Best to contact the weapons marshal for the LARP you plan on attending.
@cjtheprop-maker6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, much appreciated.
@ronytheronin74396 жыл бұрын
Maybe I little more padding, but certainly not a full core. And maybe grind the edges of the core a bit more so they don’t pierce the foam. My biggest issues are with the flats of the blade. It has like half an inch thick of foam. And foam that are spongy enough for safety are rarely making pretty weapons

MY ONE point of criticism: next time use a fiberglass or pvc core. Wood is the devil! if you play with friend and it break its gonna splinter and break following the grain of the wood, which means along its lenght creating sharp points. sometime the sword is already broken and a sharp point goes trough the foam hurting your friends. fiberglass will snap and pvc will bend. which case you will see your prop/larp weapon fail before you can feel it. NOW as for the rest of the build. [insert BORAT voice] VERY NICE! i like the layered construction and the dry brushing. now just had a coat or 6 of clear plasti-dip and you're good!
