My work requires a lot of travel, and I do New York to Boston and New York to DC fairly frequently in a normal time (more often the New York-Boston route). I've taken Acela a few times when I need to move quickly, and one time, I took Acela First Class because it was only a $20 upgrade and it allowed me to be much more spaced out right before the beginning of the pandemic (I'm slightly immunocompromised and my work relies on me being able to sing, dance, and use my body, so I was already wearing N95s to keep me from getting the flu!). If you're not paying more than I would say a $50 upgrade from business, I think that First Class on Acela is worthwhile because you do get a decent meal (I was so surprised that they had a gluten free meal for me on board!) and constant drinks. However, more cost than that, and I'd recommend just sticking to business. The grab-and-go food in the cafe cars is definitely palatable for such a short journey, but if you're like me and you drink a lot, consider buying a couple soft drinks and a large water bottle before getting on the train. They always give free ice! I love traveling Acela over the Northeast Regional because of how smooth the ride is and the fact that the wi-fi does allow me to get work done, but the cost and the fact that it doesn't stop at my first choice stop (which I can't really blame them for--New Rochelle is smack between 2 Acela stops) tends to deter me from taking them. I'm so glad you had such a wonderful journey! Safe travels!

Acela: Gotta go fast Japan, China, and Europe: Hehe that's cute And yes, Moynihan Hall is incredible. Nice to see NY Penn Station improving, NY Tri-State commuters have been stuck in a dump since the OG Penn Station was demolished. Its still a tad odd with some of the operations. They basically extended the tracks they could like 50-100ft and added a long escalator. And some trains still park on platform closer to PENN exist. But guess they will get the hang. NJT will only be accessible by old PENN (tracks 1-4 are positioned so they can't be extended to the entrance) and LIRR its probably gonna make sense to still do OLD PENN since they have their own entrance.

Japan, China, and Europe: We have fast trains The USA: Hehe thats cute, we have affordable cars for everybody And as a European who lives in the EU, I'd much rather live in a country where the slightest thought of individualism and freedom like being able to afford your own car isnt taxed into oblivion. Having your own car is the ultimate convenience and comfort. No need to bow down to schedules, no need to share your personal space with random strangers, no need to sit in dirty, uncomfortable trains. Also, trains in Europe are artificially kept popular and are being shoved down our throats because other forms of travel is made expensive on purpose. That being said, those high speed trains people keep blabbing about are just on a few lines. Most trains in Europe arent any faster than the average US trains (70-80mph).

@FFred-us9tw2 жыл бұрын
Been on the railroad over 20 years. “Equipment” as a term to describe your assets is not reserved for the airline industry. We refer to freight cars as “rolling stock” but not locomotives and passenger trains. In fact all our passenger trains at Amtrak when not in revenue service are designated as equipment. “Train 97’s equipment” would be the call out on the radio. Not “train 97’s rolling stock”

The old Acela F meals were a sous vide style thing. It's also worth noting that if you're traveling both north and south of NY (e.g. PHL-NHV) you generally get two meal services (when doing BOS-PHL, I went with the cheese plate that doesn't seem to be part of the new services. Business class on Acela is basically coach: the only thing that's business class about it is that earns bonus Guest Rewards points (though Amtrak's business class is so erratic in terms of what the offering is: on some trains it's free soft drinks, others not and there's no consistency with hard product... on NE Regional, business class is basically just code for the highest coach fare bucket).

I had a good look thanks. In order for Acela to run faster than it is now, the Northeast Main Line needs to be speeded up, but the answer is to build a dedicated high-speed train line between Washington DC-New York-Providence. If you have to make it underground inevitably along the existing route along the beach, you have to boldly make it an underground route. In addition, the routes are extended to Ottawa-Scranton-Maryland-Washington D.C., Providence-Portland-Bangor-Holton, and Washington D.C-Richmond-Goldsboro-Wilton. . Washington D.C-Charlotte-Atlanta-New Orleans-Galveston-Corpus Christi-Mexico City-Acapulco I hope that the high-speed rail will be built to make Washington D.C-Mexico City faster and closer. He said that they have lots of space and no weight limits compare to the airlines. Once I had the chance to have a meal in the restaurant car. Onion soup as a starter. Steak and fries, and caramel pudding. Loved it! A few years later. No more. Switzerland is the only place I know where this is still an option. Full service restaurant cars on all trains. Go Swiss!

@@FFred-us9tw 160 mph. This is FRA limited them. I am sure FRA limited most European trains to that speed too if Europe have simular safety standards, like we have from FRA. New Acela trainsets are capable to do 186 mph with tilt activated (curved tracks) and 217 mph without tilt (straight class 8 railroads what we don't have, except under construction California HSR). But even with 187 mph with tilt, no tracks in NEC are upgraded faster than 165 mph (New Jersey only), so FRA set limit for New Avelia Liberty Acela for 160 mph in New Jersey and 150 mph in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Just 25 mph faster than current Acela train seats allowed in NJ, 135 mph. The rest of the route, Acelas goes with speed up to 125 mph, like Regionals ACS-64 lead trains. Before it was 135, but now with age cross 20 years, allowed only 135 mph in NJ and 150 mph in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. So new Acelas perhaps do most non speed restricted tracks from DC to NJ at 135 mph and 160 mph in NJ, and 125-150 mph north of New Haven to Boston suburbs.

The Metropolitan Lounge at Moynihan Station is beautiful and spacious. The Club Acela lounge in DC is indeed quite dreary, but they are about to temporarily shut it down starting on January 20th for a renovation and addition of better food options. Halleluiah for that! The food and drink on first class is decent, but what really makes the first class experience great are the people. Super friendly and efficient. One last note regarding tipping, and that is this is the first time I've ever heard any mention of tipping on a train. I've taken first class on Acela MANY times and I've yet to see anyone leaving a tip. To me this seems like leaving a tip if you're flying first class with an airline. Is this really a thing now? Jeb, first time commenting but long time viewer. You experienced a typical day during commuter hours between Newark Penn and New York Penn. Amtrak will always blame New Jersey Transit and New Jersey Transit will always blame Amtrak for the same issue. These delays can be attributed to a multitude of reasons, but the railway is shut down for at least 30 minutes on a weekly basis during the summer. I say this as an experienced NYC commuter. Amtrak will not fix the damages to the catenary wires from Hurricane Sandy because it will shut down the Hudson Tunnels for two months. A valid reason, but it results in an unreliable transit system. For that reason, I would caution anyone from relying on Amtrak if they are particular about timeliness, which many NYC commuters are.

IMO I prefer to take Amtrak NE Regional for 3 reasons: 1. Price ($39 vs $150+) 2. Mobility (Throughout the train) 3. Schedule (50 more minutes isn’t a dealbreaker)

So I literally just did WAS to NYC last week....but I've done NYC to BOS twice. For prices - it really depends when you book it. I Probably wouldn't pay twice as much, but 1.5 to 1.75 as much. And how far in advance you book. Just get the most out of it, make sure to visit the lounge and if nothing else get a few extra waters along the trip. Honestly - other than a splurge, I would probably be ok with business on the slower regional train (which you get free non-alcohol drinks but no food) Lounges: Washington lounge is god awful except that you have either water or soda. The old Club Acela in PENN use to be similar. In BOSTON the food/drink is a bit better, but the lounge itself is overall nicer. Now - you didn't go in on your video....but I THINK you get lounge access at destination. And the new lounge in Moynihan is OUTSTANDING. Its like an airport business lounge just with no showers. Make sure to check that out....hell if I do a sleeper to Chicago, (which passes by my suburb station) I might actually make sure to go into NYC first just to get lounge access. YOU NEED to visit it. NY went from having probably the worst lounge to having the best on Amtrak routes.

Ever thought to do other modes of transport like ferries or fast ferries? Would be cool to learn about some around the country! I know the Victoria Clipper in Seattle to Victoria, BC is awesome and you can even tag on a floatplane flight via Kenmore Air on their Otter to get a cool return trip experience. I’m sure other areas have cool trips like this too.

I reccomend trying the Pacific Surfliner on the west coast as it goes right along the ocean. The ocean stretches are San Juan Capistrano-Oceanside, Ventura-Santa Barbara, and the longest is Goleta-Guadulape. I reccomend taking it from LA to San Luis Obispo.

Acela is plenty OK, but I'm eager to scorch the "ballast" in the new train set!

Well. I think I’ll wait to go out of my way to ride the Acela until the upgrade. But maybe if I find myself out in that area

While the top speed is briefly reached closer to Boston, its worth noting the travel time and overall avg speed between DC and NY is faster than NY to Bos. North NYC it slows down considerably, sharing tracks that are owned by Metro North railroad, alot which have 70mph ish speed limits.

4:17 I was able to walk the entire train while in First Class. I'm not sure why it would be blocked off, I mean you should be able to access the Cafe car at any time..?
