I have to hand it to you my man, you explain it the way that I like to have it explained. I have not played Madden in years and finally bought a copy for my new next gen console. And I don't watch football at all (mostly soccer). So I have been researching online about how to get good and one of the things I struggled with was how to read and call plays (especially on defense), you did a very good job (Kudos to you my brother)

This is amazing! I was a QB in high school and have been playing madden at a fairly high level for a couple years now (I usually win 16-18 ish games in WL) and this is the most I’ve ever learned about defense. Keep it up👍🏻👍🏻

@@ryanslonaker5087 you have to learn the weaknesses of each coverage and attack the areas of the field where they are weak. For example, cover 2 is weak in the deep middle of the field so that's why post routes can be effective. Drags and dig routes can be effective against cover 4 (not match) because the defense is concerned about the deep ball and giving you the underneath space. Once you know the coverage, you can then begin to determine where to attack it. However that's only part of the battle. You have to read what the other zones are doing. For example, you will attack different areas if you face a cover 3 hard flat (2 hard flats) vs cover 3 sky (2 curl flats). A good player will mix and match and even adjust zones to make you think something is open when it isn't.

Middle field open vs Middle field closed. You have your post shot alerts for certain plays when you get MFO look. You have seam check alert vs MFC. For zone defense you typically have to check the ball down. And then always check to see if you have a hot throw vs 6man blitz.

I understand how to read the d but how do you know what routes are good for each coverage?

So think of it this way.. generally the defense will rush 4. So if 3 guys are deep (cover 3), then you have 4 underneath. If it's 4 deep, 3 underneath etc. So you have to learn the weaknesses of each coverage. For example, cover 3 can be weak against corner routes IF they are playing hard flats or if their curl flats are not deep. I'd recommend looking up each coverage and researching where they are weak. That's how I learned. Then you just make adjustments off what your opponents tendencies are.

Hey so on the cover 1 and 3 category when the cover 3 runs back thats the right safety and the left safety runs down but on cover 1 the left safety runs back and the right comes down is that always what happens

Yes in cover 1/cover 3 1 safety will play the middle third and 1 will either drop into a "buzz" or a flat zone (and sometimes will be manned up)

When do you throw the ball? Do you throw it based on the open spots on the field or the way the defenders play the WRs, TEs and RBs

Both. Zones will have soft spots and certain routes will beat man coverage.This is why play design is so important. You need to have a play that has a route to look to vs each defensive shell. I could have spent an hour talking about where & when to throw the ball and weaknesses of every shell but its best saved for another video.

It takes time. Videos like this are actually more helpful than the one play tds and glitchy plays the are all over KZbin. You don't need "money plays" if you can understand what the defense is doing and how to attack the areas of the field where there is green grass.... I would rewatch this video and look for others like it to help you learn how to read the defense presnap and post snap. The more you get comfortable the more you'll understand what you're looking at

I can see how youd think that IF you only look at the safeties. If people start using man align on you - it might be more advantageous to start reading the CBs. Youll see the way they drop is very different than man coverage. In man coverage they will actually face their WR and run. An outside third might do the same - but usually he will just bail/drop instead of pressing and running with the WR.
