DSI Prophet 12 soundscape III - What is there to feel

I had a few moments to write something. I came up with this patch and then made the soundscape to go with it. Maybe these should be called synthscapes. I don't know. Well, I feel like maybe I'm starting to understand how to make this sound the way I want it to sound.

sort of this overlooked prophet, but a gem, truly. lovely demonstration of this iconic flagship synth during the 2010s analog Renaissance.

Yeah - I always wanted one. Wished it was a little warmer and opened up more fully (to get all those frequencies above 15khz), but it's a very interesting synth.

It's funny to me how people get so precious about the P12. They accept lots of purely digital synths for what they sound like, but they complain about a hybrid. It has: Five DSP-based oscillators per voice (including one sine wave sub oscillator) Four classic wave shapes (saw, square, triangle, sine) per oscillator Twelve selectable complex shapes per oscillator Three noise types per oscillator: white, pink, violet Analog VCAs Shape modulation Oscillator cross modulation: frequency modulation (both standard, and classic, DX-style linear FM) and amplitude modulation (AM) DX-style linear FM Hard sync on each of the four oscillators And people say, "I can't make any good sounds with this." Pearls before swine. Beautiful demo. 🤣👌🏻

Hey thanks - Well, I'm one of those that kind of doesn't get along with the P12. And don't get me wrong, I love hybrids. The Ensoniq ESQ-1 and Ambika are incredible hybrids. I also love my Spectralis 2 (which is a hybrid monosynth). Everything you said was true about what it has. But I find that what it does within those specs can be somewhat unfulfilling. For instance "DX-style linear FM" can only be achieved by using FM, then adding that with DC, then adding that with DC, then adding that with DC... like 7 times, to get what I'd consider about 1/3 of the way to how gnarly the DX7/SY77 can get when you modulate a single carrier with one modulator. The P12 is very tame in this instance. That's not say it cannot get there (to some extent), I just think it takes a lot of effort to get there. That's also not to say you can't get good sounds - I've found I get lots of likable sounds out of it - it just often feels like a struggle getting there, even though it has the best UI for a complicated synth I've ever used. My least favorite aspect of the synth is that they tried way too desperately to remove aliasing, so the high frequencies are barely there, this makes the synth sound mid-range-y, which reminds me a lot of my Korg Radias. Again - it's a very good synth, I just wish they hadn't been so timid in letting the synth just breathe. Thanks!

@@MIDERA I think it breathes and gets wild with no problem. But I prefer to stay away from these subjective terms. I simply claim that it does some uncommon things well because of its unique architecture, which is quite different from many synths. And it doesn't do everything well. This is true of every synthesizer ever made.

Beautiful sounds my friend. I mentioned in one of your other P12 vids that I'd added a Prophet 12 to my studio, and was holding off on a review until I got to know the machine a bit. Well, after a month or so with this instrument I have to say it's a keeper. Such a strange, beautiful, aggressive, wild sounding machine. I have the Klark Teknik BBD-320 (Dimension D clone) on my submixer's FX sends, and wow does that sound so nice with the P12 mixed in about 30%. Maybe it's that little extra analog-ness.

Hey thanks :) Glad to hear you're enjoying your P12! I had a BBD-320 for a very short time. It was nice, but I didn't need it. I should reconsider combining my MD-500 with it though. I find I use chorus a lot more often than I realize when it's embedded in a synth FX.

Hmm, could’ve just been this specific track, although I usually agree that the P12 is a bit muddy. I kinda liked this one, it’s very different. But that’s just me. Thanks anyway :)
