UPDATE: I tried changing the CMOS battery and the screen still doesn't come on. Seems more serious so the laptop has now been thrown away.

im on the same stuff right now but there's hope if you get the body of the display off you can see a cable going from the battery to the display, the cable is the issue all you need is to repair it

Its the cmos battery. Its a cr2032. Took me 10-15 min to get the laptop apart to get to it. I have this same model. Take all the screws out of the panel on the back to access the harddrive and ram area. Remove the hardrive, remove the battery and the 3 screws under it. Remove all the screws on back of laptop. Take the part above the keyboard off with a flat head pocket screw driver and then remove the keyboard. Take out the 4-5 screws under and around the keyboard and lift the bottom panel where the mouse bar is and the battery is underneath it. I didnt even take the whole panel off just lifted in that area and pulled the cmos battery out. Replaced it and it works fine.

Thanks for your post.. The CTRL-ESC-Power button helped.. After changing the HDD to an SSD I couldn't get any video.. After doing what you prescribed, it powered up correctly..

Well mine worked as you said Mike CTRL+ESC+POWER and then removing finger from the power button only while still holding down CTRL +ESC and boom! Almost 3 hrs trying to figure out what was wrong with my laptop. Thank God for KZbin and thank God for people in the comment section. Also, I want to point out my issue just in case someone out there has it too: I was playing a videogame (Sims 3 Disc). Apparently it overheated and it shut off completely. My laptop was on top of two speakers leaving an area for wind from a fan to pass by (I had the fan pointing at the back of the laptop entirely while playing). This is not new for me because this laptop has done it so many times. The difference was that it couldn't boot up by itself this time around. This is Acer Aspire 5538 Win7 AMD Athlon 64x2 processor L310(1.20Ghz)4gb RAM 320HDD.

Yo john, if you didn't fix you're comp yet, and didn't put in a new CMOS battery, do it. I just dropped 8 hrs into fixing my mothers aspire 7550, i had the computer apart twice checked every connection over and over...yeah i changed the CMOS battery and the screen turned on, i still dont believe that the computer don't even tell you to replace the battery, just gives a black screen. Crazy as hell man.

Thanks so much for the tip on ctrl + esc + power on! I had the same problem, I tried FN key + esc + power on and started it up, but nothing happened more than the regular black screen, but then while it was on I instead held down the ctrl + esc + power on and it restarted and there was the screen! Incredible!! :)

Silly question but going to ask anyway, do you think the screen might be broken?As you posted this video nearly a month ago, did you cure the problem?

Hi John, I've had this problem from new 7 years ago and should have taken it back, but I found that if you close the screen (shut screen down to keyboard) and then wait for the left blue light next to the clickbar to go to yellow (takes a few seconds) and then open it up and press the power button it will start normally. It usually happens to mine if I don't use it for more than 12 hours. Good luck, hope it works for you.

O that sux man, I've worked on computers for years and fixed many many of them, i never seen a computer that made the screen black wothout a CMOS batt. It blew my mind that was the issue. I was hoping maybe you didn't try that yet. Have you opened it up and reseat the screen connections? The main connection isnt bad to get to, the one one the back of the lcd is a bit harder. But Acer is known to have an issue with those cables.
@John_B_Gage5 жыл бұрын
To be honest Getting to the battery wasn't easy. I did damage the keyboard slightly. Acer made sure that it wasn't easy to replace so, it's gonna get thrown away.

It would cost more to send than it's worth. lol. I just salvage whats good then throw the rest, ie the RAM and the HDD. Laptops are a pain when they go wrong. I always stick to owning a PC. At least you can replace the parts easy.

Hi John, try William Yu's excellent "How to fix or troubleshoot a blank or black screen not powering up issues laptop"; if your friend has not replaced the device. Very methodical & fairly easy to follow. Author also took the time to explain the rationale for each step. KZbin's spam filter has prevented me from posting URL's in the past; hence the author & title given instead. After spending nearly a day attempting to fix my Acer 710 Chromebook, found the above cited video, reseated the ram stick & (Allah kareem!), got the screen back.

Working on this issue for a client, same laptop, and in my case, it was the CMOS battery. I have never seen a computer not boot because of a dead CMOS battery, but I guess this one is an exception. To anyone disassembling, you can probably google guides online, but to do a quick instruction to those who are pretty familiar with laptop disassembly, it’s like most laptops that you unscrew from the back, pop out the keyboard, unscrew underneath that, then pop the top off, but with a twist I haven’t seen before: the clips that hold in the keyboard don’t move. You have to take the small panel at the top off that has the power and other buttons, then you can take out the keyboard, unscrew everything, INCLUDING the hinges, unplug and deroute the LCD cable and radio antennas, take the screen off, then you can finally take off the rest of the top case.
