Draining the battery when plugged in is due to the 180W Power brick not supplying enough current to the CPU/GPU. The shortfall is being made up by drawing the extra needed power from the battery. That would suggest that a 200-220W power brick would probably be a better choice than the stock 180W unit. Having to supplement AC power from the battery solves the short term power shortage problem but it will have a longer term effect of reducing the working life of the battery. If you have a higher wattage power brick with matching voltage and a compatible power connector available, You might find it an interesting experiment next time to see similar behavior to compare the performance with the stock brick and the higher wattage brick. You may find that the power limit throttling is, at least in part, a function of the power brick hiting its limitations to provide enough power rather than a bios setting artificially limiting performance .
@JarrodsTech6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've seen that with a couple of 8750H/1060 laptops now, personally I'd prefer the slightly bigger power brick to not have it drain at all, but yeah only happens in the more intensive games. Hmm could be interesting to test with a higher brick, I didn't have any spare at the time of making the video though so would depend on what other laptops I've got available at the time.
@bradmorri6 жыл бұрын
@@JarrodsTech you would have a better view than I do. Are the NVIDIA laptops from different brands currently running the same voltage bricks? The last time I looked, the laptop I looked at was a 19 v supply I think. Been quite a while.

Jarrod'sTech you only challenge then it to find an appropriate connector when the opportunity arises
@bradmorri6 жыл бұрын
@Nathaniel Smith It's not really a problem. Super high power draw is only bursty in nature and the battery can pick up the slack for those short periods of time. Assuming that you can continue to cool the high power draw condition, if you can flatten the battery the lack of the extra current boost for the CPU should make it current throttle and reduce power draw. A higher capacity power brick will just preven that possibility ever happening but at the cost of more weight to carry around

So I researched a lot and I use Throttlestop and it helps a lot. My suggestion is if you have a Facebook search up the Acer group with over 2000 members who help a lot. In summary it’s a great laptop but you got to be able to handle fix the heat or find a work around. I use Throttlestop and say I played fortnite for like 3 hours if I didn’t use Throttlestop then it would be around 86c now with Throttlestop I get to temps around 65c which is not bad at all. Im so glad I have my XPS 15 2 in 1 now. (super stupid that the inspiron drains battery breaks its plastic the moment I receive my XPS) Our father's old Acer laptop was also plastic and broke very easily (ten years ago also at the hinge), we were very skeptical to buy again from the brand, and we do hear a lot of breakage stories with the brand, be weary of that, I cant attest for the build quality of Acer products nowadays

I used the acutal Acer anniversary 15% discount and bought the top model with i7, 1060 and 144Hz for around 1275,- EUR. This is a steal! The 144Hz screen is not only faster, but much brighter and more color accurate, than the 60Hz option. Brightness is on the level of my old Asus VivoBook Pro N551, which is hard to get these days. And its anti glare is excellent also. The build quality is very good and when idle (browsing, email etc) it is completely silent (no HDD, only 2x SSD). Even under heavy load, the noise level is better than from my N551 and it adapts quick, when the load ends. When I quit a game and launch Predator sense to monitor the fan speed, it has already cooled down and got quieter. I also like the speakers, after many reviews I suspected them to be worse. Using the Dolby contol panel, I found a setting that I like in a minute. The Helios also looks less clumbsy in reality than on pictures. The keypad is large and excellent, much better than what I know from Acer gaming laoptops some years ago. What I don't like so much: yes, it is a fingerprint magnet. I was hoping to get the white anniversary option, but that one seems to be sold out. The keyboard lightning is so-so. When looking from an angle, I mainly see the light under the keys, but it is OK to type in dark environments. Overall the keyboard is average, the N551 had a better one. Overall this is a laptop I would recommend to friends and famlily, especially at this price.

I do include a few more games in the dedicated gaming benchmark video, they usually go up a few days before the main review as I can get the results up quicker for the people that only care about that 👍 hmm not too sure when the best time is as it will vary between regions, eg in the US they have black friday sales, but here in Australia we don't really get anything, so if you're buying online that could be one option, it's coming up soon. Otherwise when new CPU/graphics are released you might see a drop in price on older models that still perform very well, if you don't need the latest and greatest could be a good time to buy.

Same graphics? The CPU won't matter in most games, the i5 is still decent for a gaming laptop. Yes performance will be better with the i7, but if you're primarily using it for gaming, with lower settings in most games the 144Hz screen will look nicer. If you're using it for tasks outside of gaming like video editing the extra cores from the i7 would be more beneficial. You might be able to upgrade the screen later yourself so it's worth finding out if you can buy a screen to do that if you want, because you cannot upgrade the CPU later as it's soldered to the motherboard, so may be better to buy the i7 model and upgrade the screen yourself later if an option.

Jarrod. My budget is $2500. I’m considering msi gt65 stealth thin. Asus ROG Zephyrus m, rog scar ii, Acer Predator Helios 500 and the gigabyte aero 15. I will mostly be playing plugged in and this will be my last laptop I purchase. Playing WoW, cs go, and LoL. What do you think my best option is and what would you choose. Thank you
@JarrodsTech6 жыл бұрын
I think all of those laptops will be plenty powerful enough for those games, do you want thin or thick? I'd go for thin if you actually travel with it, and in terms of specs out of the thin ones the Zephyrus M is probably the best, Scar II may be close competition but I'm testing it out at the moment so I don't fully know how it compares just yet (will do dedicated comparison video in the future). Otherwise if size/weight isn't an issue Helios 500 would be pretty good, I have a review on that too.

@JarrodsTech6 жыл бұрын
Better for what? For gaming the Helios with 1060 will come out ahead in most games, the graphics typically matter more than the CPU. Not only that, but the 8th gen i5 and i7 CPUs have the same 3.9GHz all core turbo speed, with the i7 only 100MHz ahead on the single core turbo. Most games won't use the extra two cores of the i7 either, so unless you're doing other tasks like streaming etc at the same time then the i5 should be plenty.

@JarrodsTech6 жыл бұрын
I didn't open the 7th gen model so not sure what the cooling system looks like, my suspicion is that they didn't change it though, either way the 8750H will generally run a fair bit warmer than the 7700HQ due to those extra two cores, however despite this it will still perform better in pretty much all cases. You had earlier done a review of MSI GV62 8RE, I have noticed that there is remarkable difference in gaming performance between this and the msi while having the same graphics card. Does the CPU really affect the gaming performance this much? Because the i5-8300H doesn't really get maxed out during gaming.
@Stellock6 жыл бұрын
I have the same laptop, in fact I purchased it after his review, by your name you got it from Flipkart, right? That's the same one I have, the unigine valley score was around 2.8k for me. 11k for firestrike. That's the standard score for 1060 laptops. Check yours.
@JarrodsTech6 жыл бұрын
I'm going to compare the 8300H and 8750H CPUs in a future video, so I'll save my conclusions for then once I've gone over all the data. I don't think there should be that much of a difference, the difference between them I think is that the GV62 I reviewed only had a single stick of memory, while the Helios 300 had dual channel memory (although it is also available with single channel). I've covered the performance difference between single channel and dual channel memory in this video, and you can see that it makes quite a large difference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5DEgZSgaraeo68

@JarrodsTech6 жыл бұрын
Ah that's no good, let me know how the undervolting goes, should help but sometimes it doesn't, depends on the scenario, in some cases I have seen temperatures go up, presumably as the CPU is able to operate at higher clock speeds with the power limits no longer coming into effect, but most of the time it does help temperatures and boost performance.

I haven't really looked at the predator models because I've never been offered one to review yet so don't know too much about them. The 17" Helios 300 may run a little cooler as in theory it has more space for cooling, though from previous testing when I've compared the same model of a 15" and 17" laptop I saw no real differences in temperatures so maybe that is not the case. Yeah try and avoid that.
