That's what happens when you give it time..... Planted 17-18 years ago and pretty much maintenance free in all that time, it is great that you've managed to see how it turned out. As I mention in the video, the thing we love about Jap. maples is that they look nice, almost at whatever stage they are at. From little nursery plants to venerable old specimens, from pot grown patio plants to intricate bonsai, there's something magical about them. We hope you get a chance to plant them somewhere in your garden, and then be able to admire and show them off to all your gardening friends. If you haven't already, you might consider subscribing to our channel because there's lots more videos like this one coming.... and also, it would be great, if you could kindly click the "like" icon on any videos that you find helpful, because that will help other people find the information too.

@@OverdevestNurseries I planted my Coral Bark yesterday. I'm a happy gardener. We actually moved BACK to this house Dec 10th. I've dug up the coral bark and a Cherokee Brave dogwood from our previous home, zone 6b, VA three hours away on the VA coast, zone 7/8..both will get full sun during the day, but not the intense late evening sun..so I know they will thrive. So happy to have both in the ground.

I have lost other varieties of Japanese Maples that were supposed to be hardy here in zone 5b. Mine is about 7 years old. VERY slow growing. Trunk thickens first before it puts on much height. Very hardy. I have lost other varieties of Japanese Maples that were supposed to be hardy here in zone 5b. Mine is about 7 years old". Thanks, you are outside of our region (experience level), but it is rated as Zone 5, so it should be OK for you. As you may have noticed in David's commentary in some of our other videos, he suggests keeping an eye out in neighborhoods, and public gardens in your area, because if you spot one growing in that area, that chances are that it will be fine for you too. The main thing will be trying to find a sheltered spot that will protect the young soft growth from searing winds in early spring (just after leaf burst). This is when the plant will be most vulnerable, so obviously try to avoid an open windy place or plant some wind sheltering species first on the prevailing wind side. Love your videos! Question…..building is booming where I am and smaller properties are the big thing. No one wants to take care of large properties and that includes trees shrubs and grass 😥. So…unfortunately trees that need shade from taller trees is not an option. We have 5 columnar sweet gums that we are waiting to grow up and out but need a foliage tree for a corner that we need privacy in. Full sun , clay soil 🙄. We planted a blood good Japanese maple…it scorched. We now have a dogwood tree that isn’t looking promising for the upcoming spring. Could you possibly do a series on plants/trees/shrubs that pack a punch for small yards?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Thanks for responding. Just to clarify, this selection will grow in sunny conditions, not just as we have it, in partial shade: grownbyoverdevest.com/plant/sango-kaku-japanese-maple/ Japanese maples are quite sun and drought tolerant (once established), and obviously the better the soil conditions, the better they are going to be able to cope. That's why we advise digging a generous sized hole, incorporating copious amounts of organic matter at planting time, deep mulching, and following up with extra watering during any prolonged dry periods (especially during the first few months and years). Your request for more content on smaller, more compact selections is a good one. In today's world, garden spaces are becoming smaller and smaller, and with that in mind, we are always looking for new exciting selections that have outstanding appeal. We will most certainly be publishing more videos on this important subject. Meanwhile, to help you now, we've started a new playlist called "Outstanding, compact growing plants that "Pack a BIG Punch": kzbin.info/aero/PL_d_0WZ3OfNRFCth8F7iaS8Pw_sKRyOEN in the coming days, weeks and years, we will be adding to playlist - so stay tuned, because there's a lot of really good plants that easily qualify and you will enjoy having. 🤩👌👍💚

Yes, we (occasionally) notice that too. Sometimes, the stress of drought and extreme summer heat takes away from the Fall color. They are normally quite drought tolerant, but of course deep mulching, and some supplemental watering during extended dry periods helps to keep the foliage lush and healthy and ready to provide breathtaking Autumn color.

@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Pruning them would produce young fresh, brightly colored stems, but I usually don't encourage people to do this because of a troublesome disease called coral spot nectria canker. So, the less pruning that is carried out the better. Instead, keep your plants growing lush and healthy with good culture and you will get to see the lovely red stems. Later on, when your plants mature (like mine) the color will be confined to the finer tips of branches, but they are still pretty, especially on a frosty or snowy winter morning.

Well done, you've correctly identified the Genus (Miscanthus). The plant is the Variegated Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus'): grownbyoverdevest.com/plant/variegatus-variegated-maiden-grass/, it is normally more upright and erect in habit, but because it is positioned under a maple tree, in a partially shaded spot, the habit is a bit more open than usual. The other plants in the border are mostly various Hellebores Including the FANTASTIC Friostkiss® series: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Helleborus, we love the speckled, semi-evergreen foliage and the terrific long-lasting early flowers, and the other evergreen items you may have seen are Leucothoes: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Leucothoe. A particular favorite of mine (because it is doing so well) is Rejoyce: grownbyoverdevest.com/plant/rejoyce-coastal-leucothoe/ as you've probably noted these plants are out there where the deer roam and (so far) have never been touched!

@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
At the risk or landing your poor husband in more trouble...... I have to mention, that I usually encourage people to avoid or do minimal pruning to Japanese maples. But, if you ever wish to remove some branches or thin out the head, this is best done in late winter when the plant is dormant or in dry periods like summer when the wood has "hardened" up. The time to avoid is spring and in wet weather because of the possible infection of a disease called Coral Spot Nectria Canker. It enters through wounds and spreads during damp periods and can cause serious problems especially if the tree is stressed or ailing. Also, it is very important to clean your tools in between treating other trees and plants.

They do not perform well in poor draining conditions, and with your clay soil the roots are likely to sit in cold, water logged conditions (especially during the winter and very early spring after snow melt or when the water table is highest). So, if you want to try again, we should suggest you dig a few test holes to try and select the best planting position, and when we are faced with clay soils that do not drain that well, we build raised beds by adding extra soil, so that the elevated soil level can drain and prevent the roots from getting saturated wet. A bottomless pot will still fill with water and is unlikely to be mush better.

I heard Japanese maple should be planted in protected low wind area? Is this apply to this cultivar?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Japanese maples are superb and very special garden plants, but the young growth tips shortly after bud break in spring are vulnerable to damage by cold driving winds. Which is why they can suffer in windy, exposed locations. This selection is less affected than many of the others (especially the cut leaved types), but never the less, in windy areas, it is best to plant wind breaks to create shelter first, then in a few years plant the Jap maples so they can be enjoyed to the fullest extent.

Ah oh! That's unusual to hear! 🙁 Normally, as you've probably seen in our video, it is a good, vigorous grower and over the years, David says he's never heard of this. Normally, they thrive and do well! Not sure what we can suggest beyond making sure that you examine the base of the plant and see if there's any root competition like grass growing around it. If it is planted in a lawn of grass area, the root competition from grass is going to be strong and that might be causing the weak growth. Obviously water it well (and regularly) during any dry, prolonged periods, and perhaps give it a light dressing of a well-balanced fertilizer too in spring. That should help it put on better growth. If all else fails, and you don't see much change, then it might be time (This Fall or next spring), to "give it a ride in a wheel barrow" and select another planting spot with better soil conditions. Here's a link to another of our videos that will help you understand our recommended planting procedure: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqrFhWall96Xhtk In this video David is planting and evergreen, and of course the plant is grown in a pot, but the principles are the same.... if you decide to transplant it.
