There you go.... Everyday a little more knowledge and a little more gardening enjoyment! That's what we try to help with here at Overdevest and at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. Choosing this very reliable "tried and true" selection for your new home is exactly what David advocates in this video, and hopefully, we have now helped to bring you a little extra level of appreciation for it. Over the years, we have tested lots of garden plants and the line up we offer through our website, this channel, and at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ (which are located all over the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern US States) represents the best of them. So when you are researching more plants for your garden, be sure to scroll though our selection, because they really do represent the best of the best! Have you subscribed to our channel yet? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find them helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find out about the information as well. I like this selection for the mature height of 20 feet, but the untrimmed width of 9-10 ft at 18-20 ft height, according to an answered comment below, is a little more than I would like. I would prefer to keep the height but reduce the lower width to more like 6-7 feet. Can Junior Giant be trimmed as its lower width exceeds the desired size, by only trimming the growth outside the 7 ft circle? I would not trim all at once when it is mature but annually as it grows, so that I am not taking a massive cut at the very end
@OverdevestNurseries

Thanks for watching and for your question. The answer is.... Absolutely! Thuja Junior Giant responds really well to trimming. In fact, the bushy, fine textured foliage is even more impressive when it is regularly trimmed. As you will hear from David in this follow up video entitled "What is the rate of growth of Junior Giant Arborvitae": kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIO7aKaIadR6eNEsi=AHA1okIxv75yVkBt (if you haven't seen it yet), the neat thing about this selection is that unlike its bigger and coarser growing parent Thuja 'Green Giant' , it will do very nicely in most garden situations without any trimming! But as we mention above, when it is trimmed, it will be even more compact, bushy and shapely. What we would suggest is that you start trimming as a young specimen, it can be done as frequently as you wish, and at almost any time of year, but David says he likes to start trimming his evergreens in early spring after the worst of the winter has passed, that way, the new growth will quickly refurnish and the plant won't look "trimmed" for very long. Doing it early on in the plant's life, means that you can steadily build up a natural looking, in proportion, conical "Christmas tree-like" shape, that of course would be wider at the base and tapered to the top. As we think you understand, the important thing with all coniferous evergreens like this, is to keep trimming the young juvenile growth because they do not resprout well from the older woodier branches inside the specimens. David explains more about this in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3yknaKbqdqhp6ssi=KYfg9RqF6FBF0f9V, he is demonstrating it here on a slow growing selection but the principle would be similar for Junior Giant. We hope all this helps to answer your question. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. You are very welcome. Thanks for watching. The weather is just one of the challenges we face as gardeners - it is always a factor to keep an eye on. Means that with some plants the planting location is very important, sometimes within a few yards (and perhaps even feet), we can find a spot that's more sheltered or protected, better drained, more sunny or shaded - whatever! David says he is often amazed how sometimes a plant will thrive and prosper in one place, and then another that is planted nearby.... struggles! All because the conditions vary from spot to spot! We hope you are finding our efforts helpful. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? Do you carry American pillar arborvitae? I’m thinking that it would be just as tall but not as wide. I’m looking for a fast narrow screen in partial shade. Preferably with little to no maintenance(besides watering)
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 24 күн бұрын
We've tested and trialed most of the Arborvitae selections currently on the market and of them all.... this one Thuja Junior Giant remains our favorite. 😜🙂😀 We really like the way it consistently makes an elegant, shapely, pyramidal specimen🌲 that does not need shearing as the plants grow to form a screen. We like how it uniformly and economically fills in the space in a good time frame to produce a well furnished screen that is much better suited to the average residential situation. Planting narrow, upright growing sentinels are useful for creating focal points or framing entrance ways etc., but in our experience (as a screen) it takes more of them to fill the space in between each specimen, and as they mature the lower portions tend to loose vigor and get drawn up and shaded by each other, and therefore have a tendency to become "leggy" just when you need them to nicely furnished to the ground. Here's a link to a more recent video that David filmed to answer another viewer's question: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIO7aKaIadR6eNEsi=npuMQAmWCSBPgP3- it might help you understand why we believe Thuja Junior Giant is the best screening arborvitae out there. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? Thanks for your question and appreciative comment, It is wonderful to hear you are enjoying our content. The stem and bud hardiness of these types of Hydrangeas depends a good deal on the location and the genetics of the varieties. Obviously plants in a sheltered spot are going to fare better than those that are out in an open exposed place. So site selection is important, but also we've noticed in our trials that some varieties are more susceptible to winter damage than others. To help you understand that here's a link to one of our videos entitled "Finding Hydrangeas That Bloom - Update (2nd Video) Featuring Trial Results of the BEST 13 Selections": kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYKvYYR-pcSGaqMsi=o0qa2OcWelqfd3YY In it, you will see David giving you a run down on how some of the over 40 Varieties we are testing turned out, and in particular you will hear him explain how some of them have better stem hardiness than others. Also, remember that it takes time for many of these selections to make larger bushes! For instance the two plants (Hydrangea 'Together' and Hydrangea Endless Summer) that David shows in this video were probably planted over 10 years ago. And that's why, we suggest you stay tuned to our channel, because the plants in our current trial have only been planted 2 and 3 years ago! And now as that they are nicely established and maturing, we will be watching them carefully because as they mature we can more accurately gauge and monitor their performances. So, there's a lot more information unfolding, and as this happens David will be bringing you the results. In addition, we would suggest that you talk to the experts at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ they know your local conditions and complexities and will be able to guide you with their thoughts as well. Might these lend themselves to topiary?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 29 күн бұрын
That's a great idea, the finely textured foliage would be really wonderful for clipping into topiaries. We haven't done anything like that yet because one of the big advantages of this selection is that as a maturing garden plant it naturally makes a shapely, conical specimen that unlike many of the other sorts - doesn't need clipping. In fact (as David mentions), the plants in this video have never been trimmed! They naturally form this lovely pyramidal shape on their own. Except for removing a few contesting leaders (extra shoots that may occasionally sprout near the top), these plants have never been sheared! Which is a major advantage over other selections. Hi good day, how would Gertrude Jekyll compare to Bishop Castle in term of disease resistance?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 24 күн бұрын
We have both of these selections in our 4 year old trials. Both are lovely roses, but if we had to pick one - it would be Gertrude Jekyll.... It is interesting that David Austin have discontinued Bishops Castle, in our experience (while it is a nice rose) it never really was a stand out performer. It fares reasonably well against blackspot but is one of their few varieties that is susceptible to powdery mildew, so for these reasons, we prefer Gertrude Jekyll. We also like how it is nice and vigorous. However it can be subject to blackspot, so in our trials, to get the best results, we employ a preventive approach by spraying a systemic fungicide twice in the early part of the season, and then give it a summer prune around the end of July, which stimulates lots of nice, strong growth and beautiful flushes in late summer and autumn. Have you been watching any of the other videos (also here on our channel)? if not, can we suggest that you try to catch some of David's other videos, because we have posted several on the best performing David Austin selections...., ones that have successfully emerged as our top performers. And stay tuned too, because the trials are ongoing, and as we uncover more of our findings, we will be posting more videos too. Finally, have you subscribed to our channel? I planted mine a year ago and I am not very good with plants. These are awesome! They came back beautifully and I have had color for so long now. We are 2/3 of the way through November and they still look good! Planning on adding more around our house in the Spring!🤩

How old is this tree? I have heard that you need to be very careful with pruning young magnolias. So telling your audience the age of the example tree is vital. Explain or add a caption or postscript.

Thanks for watching and posting your question. It is appreciated. David says this one is probably 20 years or more old. He doesn't exactly remember when he planted it, but as you can tell, it is now mature, and has been there for quite a few years. With regard to your second point, in the nursery, we prune our young Magnoias all the time. That's why when you see them at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ they are bushy, well-shaped and beautifully formed, so they usually don't need any pruning unless something had happened to them. In fact this particular plant was never pruned until David responded to a viewer's question. We hope this helps explain. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? Honey, there is no such thing as a “ tarpaulian” it’s a TARPAULIN.

Thanks. David says in hindsight, he should have just taken the easy way out and said "tarp" (just like almost everyone else)! But (like often happens with David's pronunciation), it just came out this way...... That's the thing with watching his videos.... what you see, is what you get! Anyway, we hope at least, it brought a little smile to your face, and you were able to overlook this slight "fluff" and hopefully benefit from some of his "seasoned" expertise. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for helping to interpret 😃🙂 David says it is not unusual for him to get so wrapped up in explaining things....., that sometimes the words don't quite come out as he had planned! That's the thing with watching his videos.... What you see, is what you get! it's the REAL deal... "warts and all". Hopefully, you got the drift of what he was doing..., and his videos help you get a little bit more enjoyment from garden! Stay tuned, because knowing David and his eagerness to help, there's probably more mishaps and mispronunciations coming! Thanks for watching.

That's funny! At times I've been known to hold a yard tour and because I'm a plant breeder and avid collector, I do tend to have some highly desirable plants others may not. Yes, one will always get those who stand over a beautiful specimen and bat their eyelashes wishing for a cutting or division, I'm fine and well with such exchanging with friends, though some others have been outright rather demanding that I must share with them. Soooo, I simply cover over with a pail or a box what I can and just say that it's something I just recently transplanted and was looking a bit wilted, lol.

I am from an island in Dalmatia and we do put dried vitex leaves in our bedding. Nobody ever told me anything about chastity connection. Now some people put lavander in their beddings, we grow a lot of lavender and sell it to cosmetics industry - and to tourists - and we stick to vitex.

Hi David. Your knowledge on Hydrangeas are truly impeccable. Do you also trial “Eclipse” Dark leaf mophead Hydrangea? I can’t seem to find too much info on it. I picked one up this passing Summer. It states can handle full sun but here in my zone 7b NY, the leaf tips were burning so had to give it partial shade. If you can provide more info on this new breed I would greatly appreciate it. TY ❤
